Book Physiological Developmental and Behavioral Effects of Marine Pollution

Download or read book Physiological Developmental and Behavioral Effects of Marine Pollution written by Judith S Weis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing decades of work, but up-to-date, this book focuses on organism-level responses to pollutants by marine animals, mainly crustaceans, molluscs, and fishes. Emphasizing effects on physiological processes (feeding/digestion, respiration, osmoregulation), life-cycle (reproduction [including endocrine disruption], embryo development, larval development, developmental processes later in life (growth, regeneration, molting, calcification, cancer), and behaviour, the book also covers bioaccumulation and detoxification of contaminants, and the development of tolerance. The major pollutants covered are metals, organic compounds (oil, pesticides, industrial chemicals), nutrients and hypoxia, contaminants of emerging concern, and ocean acidification. Some attention is also devoted to marine debris and noise pollution.

Book Hatchery Culture of Bivalves

Download or read book Hatchery Culture of Bivalves written by Michael M. Helm and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is a synthesis of current methodologies pertinent to the intensive hatchery culture of bivalve molluscs. It encompasses both the similarities and differences in approach in rearing clams, oysters and scallops in different climatic zones. All aspects of the culture process are described, together with basic considerations in choosing a site for hatchery development and in the design of a suitable facility. It also includes the post-hatchery handling of larvae in remote setting and also of spat in both land- and sea-based nurseries. This document is intended to assist both technicians entering the field as well as entrepreneurs researching investment opportunities in bivalve culture.

Book Advances in Marine Biology

Download or read book Advances in Marine Biology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1999-09-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walleye Pollock is one of the world's largest fisheries. In this volume, the first review describes the population biology of walleye Pollock including its life history, population dynamics, genetic structure, and metapopulation structure. The second review discusses pollutants and the marine environment using ecotoxicological bioassays with bivalve embryos and larvae. These tests ascertain the effects of pure chemicals and determine the quality of effluents, coastal waters, and sediments sampled in the field.Advances in Marine Biology has always offered marine biologists an in-depth and up-to-date review on a variety of topics. As well as many volumes that provide a selection of important topics, the series also includes thematic volumes that examine a particular field in detail.

Book Operational and Environmental Consequences of Large Industrial Cooling Water Systems

Download or read book Operational and Environmental Consequences of Large Industrial Cooling Water Systems written by Sanjeevi Rajagopal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-07 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of water for industrial purposes is of foremost importance. It is used as a coolant and industrial activities dealing with power generation, steel and iron, paper and pulp and oil require very large amounts of water. The industry, therefore, resorts to large scale abstraction of water from natural water bodies. This water is often treated with chemicals to combat operational problems like biofouling and corrosion. Such withdrawal and subsequent discharge of large amounts of water have the potential to impart significant impact on the recipient water body. The organisms drawn along with the cooling water, as well as those residing at the discharge zone, are subjected to a combination of mechanical, thermal and chemical stress on a continuous basis.

Book The Adaptation and Response of Aquatic Animals in the Context of Global Climate Change

Download or read book The Adaptation and Response of Aquatic Animals in the Context of Global Climate Change written by Hongsheng Yang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic climate change has driven widespread changes in marine environments, including ocean warming, ocean acidification, and the formation of hypoxic zones. Such environmental changes would pose direct challenges to the survival and adaptation of aquatic organisms, greatly affecting the biodiversity of marine life and marine ecosystems. Changes in the marine environment are likely to have strong effects at the physiological, behavioral, and molecular levels, with implications at the individual, population, and species levels, resulting in the degradation of genetic resources through massive mortality. For example, the ingestion, digestion, respiration, and growth of aquatic animals were greatly depressed under extreme environments. In the long run, maintaining a sustainable ocean would require a better understanding of the adaptation of marine animals in response to the effects of multiple environmental stressors. The Research Topic is aimed to discuss the potential impacts of individual and compounded extreme environments on aquatic animals, as well as the regulatory mechanisms and adaptation strategies of marine species to cope with these impacts.
