Book Anthropogenic Impacts on Ghost Crab Ocypode Quadrata Populations St Thomas U S Virgin Islands

Download or read book Anthropogenic Impacts on Ghost Crab Ocypode Quadrata Populations St Thomas U S Virgin Islands written by Kaliegh Schlender and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, sandy beaches support local economies and are the most commonly-used type of coastline by people (Davis & FitzGerald, 2004; Schlacher et al., 2007), with beaches serving as popular attractions in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) for visitors from around the world. However, high urbanization causes the degradation of coastal resources. Ghost crabs, Ocypode, display predicable responses to anthropogenic impacts, and are popular ecological indicator reflecting the level of ecological stress present in sandy beaches (Barros, 2001; Costa et al., 2019; Costa & Zalmon, 2019; Gül & Griffen, 2019; Peterson et al., 2000). Although St. Thomas, USVI is a popular tourist destination, there are no beach studies in the USVI identifying beach types or the impact of high urbanization from tourism through the use of ghost crabs, to-date. This study characterizes beach types using multiple indices (Beach Index, Beach Deposit Index, Log(1/Beach Slope), and Relative Tide Range) based on physical parameters (beach slope, grain size, and wave height) for eight beaches (Stumpy Bay, Santa Maria Bay, Caret Bay, Neltjeberg Bay, Lindberg Bay, Magens Bay, Coki Point Beach, and Sapphire Beach) on St. Thomas to establish a baseline for beach types on the island. Surveys were conducted during high tourist season from February 3 - March 19, 2020 and low- tourist season from May 18 - June 25, 2020 during early morning hours. Site values for Beach Index, Beach Deposit Index, and Log (1/Beach Slope) were compared using Kruskal- Wallis Rank Sum tests and Dunn Post Hoc tests, and results indicated that all beaches were wave dominated reflective, with slight variations detected best by Log (1/Beach Slope). Additionally, urbanization effects were assessed using a modified Urbanization Index using six different variables (buildings on sand, solid waste, visitor frequency, distance to urban center, beach cleaning, and vehicle traffic) to calculate specific urbanization levels across study sites.

Book Modification of Trophic Links Between an Omnivore and Macroinfaunal Prey from Sandy Beaches of Differing Physical Regimes

Download or read book Modification of Trophic Links Between an Omnivore and Macroinfaunal Prey from Sandy Beaches of Differing Physical Regimes written by Kristina Joan Morrow and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandy beach ecosystems have been studied worldwide; however, ecological data are sparse for the extensive barrier islands of Florida. Accordingly, I investigated the feeding patterns of the ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata), a dominant omnivore inhabiting beaches along the Floridian coast. Density data was collected for ghost crabs and swash macroinfaunal prey. In addition, I utilized stable isotopes in conjunction with the mixing models IsoSource and SIAR to characterize diets of ghost crabs across three barrier islands in spring and summer 2011. Results showed that ghost crabs at Cayo Costa feed primarily on swash macroinfauna, while those from Anclote Key shifted their diet to one comprised primarily of semi-terrestrial amphipods. However, at Honeymoon Island, ghost crab isotopic signatures were best explained by a mixed diet of both macroinfauna and wrack-associated prey. The unique consumption of wrack fauna at Anclote Key co-occurs with comparatively low infaunal densities and biomass, and modified ghost crab behavior due to trait-mediated effects. My results are novel because they suggest that wrack-associated fauna may be an important food source for ghost crabs in certain beach regimes.

Download or read book The Gastro Archeologist written by Jeremy Woodward and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand common conditions such as coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease, one must view the gut in its evolutionary context. This is the novel approach to the gut and its diseases that is adopted in this book. The first part tells the story of the evolution of the gut itself – why it came about and how it has influenced the evolution of animals ever since. The second part focuses on the evolution of immunity and how the layers of immune mechanisms are retained in the gut, resembling the strata revealed in an archeological dig. The final part, ‘The Gastro-Archeologist’, ties the first two together and highlights how understanding the gut and immune system in their evolutionary context can help us understand diseases affecting them. Ambitious in its scope but telling a unique story from a refreshingly novel perspective, the book offers an informative and enjoyable read. As the story of the gut, immunity and disease unfolds, the author aims to endow readers with the same sense of awe and excitement that the subject evokes in him. Difficult concepts are illustrated using simple and colourful analogies, and the main content is supplemented with anecdotes and unusual and amusing facts throughout the book. The book is intended for anyone with an interest in the gut, its immunity and diseases, ranging from school and college biology and biomedical students, to professionals working in the field, and to patients suffering from intestinal diseases who want to understand more about their conditions.
