Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of specific transfer instruction on the rhythmic performance abilities of beginning instrumental students. The investigation examined the effectiveness of a series of instructional steps designed to transfer the application of skills from classroom rhythm activities to the performance of those rhythms on an instrument. Fifth grade students enrolled in the band or orchestra programs of the Hastings Public Schools participated in the study. The students received a total of twelve, six-minute rhythm sessions over twelve weeks, for a total of 72 minutes of instruction. Members of the treatment group received instruction that progressed from rhythmic activities to performance on an instrument. Members of the control group received identical instruction in rhythmic activities without instruments. Students' rhythmic accuracy was assessed through a pretest and identical posttest, which consisted of eleven four-measure etudes. Subjects were audio-recorded as they performed the etudes on their orchestra or band instruments. Students in both groups scored significantly better on single-pitched than on multiple-pitched etudes. Both groups, however, made significantly greater pretest to posttest gains on multiple-pitched versus single pitched etudes. Differences approaching significance were found in the students' ability to play in sync with a rhythmic accompaniment in favor of the treatment group. Significant gain scores from pretest to posttest were found in both groups.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated students' ability to transfer rhythmic skills learned in elementary general music classes to a beginning band setting. Specifically, students' rhythmic reading skills and their ability to maintain a steady pulse were examined. Other variables of interest included differences in rhythmic accuracy among fifth grade students choosing to enroll in band, orchestra or choir as sixth graders, and accuracy of students who had taken private lessons versus those who had not. Rhythmic accuracy based on the mode of response chosen by the subjects (i.e., speaking, clapping, counting) was considered, as well as subjects' accuracy on rhythms displayed in stick notation versus traditional notehead notation. Subjects included fifth and sixth grade music students (N= 39) from a suburban school district in central Ohio who completed a dependent measure designed by the researcher, consisting of 16 rhythm patterns, eight using stick notation and the identical eight patterns using traditional notehead notation. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of movement instruction on the musical and movement achievement of beginning band students. The following research questions were explored: (a) Does the use of rhythmic motor movements during instrumental lessons influence the rhythmic achievement of beginning band students? (b) Does the type of movement affect the rhythmic achievement of beginning band students? (c) Are students' music abilities influenced by the incorporation of movement and music? and (d) Are students' movement abilities influenced through the incorporation of music and movement? Fifth-grade students ( N = 100) were randomly assigned to one of five treatment groups for this study. The instruction in four of the treatment groups incorporated a unique movement technique, while the fifth group used no movement. Subjects performed a pretest, and after a 16 week period of instruction, performed a posttest. Music performance results were analyzed using a five-way ANCOVA to examine if there were significant differences in the adjusted posttest scores between groups. Results for the music performance test indicated significant differences between the movement groups with the foot tapping, stepping, and swaying groups achieving the highest mean scores. Movement results indicated significant differences among the groups, with the highest mean scores achieved by the stepping and swaying groups in the measurements of continuity, ease of execution, and rhythmic movement subtests. Among the conclusions of the study is that rhythmic achievement in elementary band and movement are mutually beneficial.

Book excerpt: There is accruing evidence which indicates that actively making music can contribute to the enhancement of a range of non-musical skills and lead to other beneficial outcomes. Research continues to explore the circumstances under which these benefits may occur. A recent review of the evidence from neuroscience suggests that early engagement may be important (before the age of seven), the length of musical engagement and commitment to it, the type of training, and the instrument learned. The quality of teaching is also crucial as to whether any benefits are realised. When teaching is poor there may be no benefits and negative outcomes. The common characteristics of musical programmes which are beneficial are emerging. They need to be highly interactive and enjoyable with opportunities for: developing new skills and performing; acquiring cultural capital; developing interpersonal bonds and solidarity in pursuing shared goals; on-going intensity and frequency of contact; developing mutual respect; and recognition and rewards for excellence. Receiving positive affirmation from others relating to musical activities, particularly performance is crucial in enhancing self-beliefs whatever the age of the participants. If performances are in high status cultural venues the impact is enhanced. The research undertaken to date suggests that: active engagement with making music should start early for the greatest benefits to be realised; engagement needs to be sustained over a long period of time to maximise the benefits; the activities need to include group work; opportunities need to be available for performance; the quality of teaching needs to be high; the curriculum needs to be broadly based including activities related to pitch and rhythm, singing, instrumental work, composition and improvisation, and the reading of notation; to have a positive impact on disaffected and at-risk young people, the musical activities need to be in a genre with which they can relate.
