Book The Effects of SO2 on a Grassland

Download or read book The Effects of SO2 on a Grassland written by William Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Springer-Verlag undertook publication of this volume, two opportunities arose. The first was to bring together the significant findings ofthe interacting parts of a large field experiment on a whole ecosystem. Scientific specialists and the public are rightly concerned with large-scale impacts of human activity on landscapes and with the challenge of predicting subtle, long-range repercussions of air pollution. A fundamental issue is whether ecological systems like grasslands, which have evolved for several million years under stressful conditions such as variable climate and overgrazing, are more robust than other systems in tolerating new atmospheric impacts of pollution and toxicity. At what level, and when, will an extra geochemical input, like sulfur (Chapter 4), an essential nutrient for proteins and life processes, become an overload on these systems? Some grasses and grassland ecosystems seem fairly adaptable to burdens in addition to those of weather change and tissue removal. How can experts learn to project the future of the heartland of America and other grasslands of the world on the basis of only a few years of observation and control? The second opportunity addresses a broader aspect of the project that is of interest to many readers who are not concerned with details of physiology or food chains, or the overall productivity and variations of a single plant-animal-soil community.

Book Environmental Impacts of Coal Mining Utilization

Download or read book Environmental Impacts of Coal Mining Utilization written by M.J. Chadwick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As coal is considered as a substitute for other fuels, more serious attention is being given to the environmental impacts of the whole coal fuel cycle: mining, transport, storage, combustion and conversion. This volume presents an up-to-date account of these environmental impacts and the recent developments to combat and control them. A feature of the book is the way in which it discusses not only the experience and developments in North America and Western Europe but also presents much information made available for this study on the developments in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe.

Book Acidification Research in the Netherlands

Download or read book Acidification Research in the Netherlands written by T. Schneider and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-08-21 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the results and conclusions of extensive research on the causes and effects of acidification of forests/forest soils and heathland in the Netherlands. In 1985 the Dutch Priority Programme on Acidification was started in order to give a more concrete form to the increasing interest of policy-makers in the effects of air pollution on ecosystems in particular. In the last three years, the research has focused on obtaining a more accurate estimate of the emission of ammonia on the deposition of SOx, NOy and NHx, and also on quantifying effects on forest and heathland ecosystems. This quantification of effects included experimental work model analyses, and derivation of critical loads and levels for forest and heathland ecosystems. Furthermore, scenario analyses were made with the Dutch Acidification Systems Model (DAS) in order to evaluate the effectiveness of policy measures. The research itself, which formed the basis for this book, has been described in the reports on individual projects. A summary of the scientific results and conclusions is given in thematic reports (added as annex). An independent Review Team has provided a critical assessment of the research carried out since 1988. The Review Report has been incorporated as annex.

Book Effects of Gaseous Air Pollution in Agriculture and Horticulture

Download or read book Effects of Gaseous Air Pollution in Agriculture and Horticulture written by M. H. Unsworth and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of Gaseous Air Pollution in Agriculture and Horticulture focuses on the impact of air pollution on agriculture and horticulture. This book discusses the existence of significant concentrations of gaseous pollutants in several agricultural regions of industrialized countries, which is facilitated by improved instrumentation and monitoring networks. Organized into six parts encompassing 49 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the two aspects of distribution of gas pollutants. This text then considers a technique for estimation of dose from measurements of gas concentration and stomatal conductance. Other chapters provide examples of monitoring of air-pollution effects on plants, with emphasis on both the concentrations and effects of air pollutants as they complement each other. This book discusses as well the formation and mechanism of action of nitrogen oxides. The final chapter deals with the peroxidation of membrane lipids. This book is a valuable resource for agriculturists, horticulturists, and scientists.

Download or read book Disturbance in Grasslands written by J. van Andel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a Symposium, held in October, 1985, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the De partment of Plant Ecology of the University of Groningen. The Department of Plant Ecology was founded by Professor Dingeman Bakker and has, since its incep tion, been involved with studies of grasslands, and especially with the effects of human interference on grassland communities. It has been especially involved in an almost unique enterprise to convert areas of grassland from intensive agricultural production to nature reserves. With over-production of most food commodities in the EEC, and increasing interest in various types of 'set aside' schemes, this initiative now seems to be remarkably prescient. The Netherlands have a long history of human manipulation of the environment. Indeed, the Dutch en vironment is probably more man-made than that of any other country. In view of this, and the Laborato ry's interest in managed grasslands, it is not surprising that 'Disturbance in Grasslands' was selected as the topic for the Laboratory's Jubilee Symposium. Although both the Symposium and the resulting vo lume, have a strong Dutch component, the organisers invited a number of contributors from Europe and elsewhere to provide key chapters. The result is a volume which covers many aspects of disturbance in a variety of grasslands. Disturbance is considered at both the community and the population level, and the principles and processes underlying those responses are explored.
