Instead, they practise one form or another of self-regulation. Self-talk in Sport explores one such self-regulatory strategy: self-talk, the inner voice that accompanies every human being throughout their lives. Over time, research has revealed many secrets of self-talk in sport, though many others remain unveiled. This book offers you the opportunity to discover the multiple identities of our self-talk, how the “inner coach” serves as a rational counterpart to the irrational self, and what we need to do to develop our inner voice to reach its maximum self-regulatory potential. There is a general need for concrete interventions in sport, exercise, and performance psychology. In addition, the autonomous functioning of people is a central aim of psychological interventions that align with positive psychology and focus on people’s strengths rather than weaknesses. In this volume, researchers and applied practitioners are shown how they can use self-talk interventions to strengthen people’s rational self-regulation in order to deal with a variety of situations that apply to both sport and other exercise and performance contexts. Since self-talk is a tangible result of cognitive processes and inner experiences that researchers and applied practitioners can barely access, Self-talk in Sport is a tool for sports psychologists to understand and interact with hidden parts within athletes that have a major impact on sport and exercise experiences and performance. A book demonstrating the diverse – both rational and irrational identities – of self-talk, as well as specific interventions to change the inner dialogue of athletes, is a fundamental piece in the education of sport scientists.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to further explore which form of self-talk (i.e., instructional or motivational) would enhance performance on precision and gross motor related tasks in the sport of softball. Additionally, the impact of negative self-talk on performance was explored. Eighty participants, forty males and forty female softball players (M = 34.04. SD = 10.16) were randomized into four self-talk groups: (1) instructional, (2) motivational, (3) negative, and (4) control group. Participants in the selftalk groups attended a self-talk training session, and generated their own self-talk statements. One week following the session, all participants completed the athletic tasks (i.e., throwing a ball for distance and throwing at a target) using their generated self-talk statements, and these tasks were repeated two additional times with at least one week between each session. Although the findings were not significant, positive and negative self-talk was found to impact performance. Akin to previous studies, positive self-talk led to enhanced performance in both gross motor and precision tasks, while negative self-talk led to poorer performance in gross motor tasks. It may be suggested that the use of motivational and instructional self-talk may be an important mental training technique that coaches and athletes could utilise when attempting to enhance athletic performance.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between motivational and instructional self-talk on precision and endurance performance in male and female NCAA Division III collegiate soccer players. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups, motivational self-talk (MST), instructional self-talk (IST), and control. Each participant took part in a precision shooting task and a biking endurance task before and after attending two short interventions teaching them about either MST, IST, or an unrelated lesson on the history of soccer. The hypotheses were that (1) Self-talk would have an effect on precision whereby participants using self-talk would show a greater increase in number of targets hit than participants in the control group; (2) IST would have an effect on precision whereby participants using IST would show a greater increase in number of targets hit than participants using MST; (3) Self-talk would have an effect on endurance whereby participants using self-talk would show a greater increase in time to exhaustion than participants in the control group; and (4) MST would have an effect on endurance whereby participants using MST would show a greater increase in time to exhaustion than participants using IST. Hypothesis 3 was supported, suggesting that self-talk may have the potential to make a tangible difference in athletic endurance performance and that different types of tasks may benefit from specific types of self-talk.

Book excerpt: While strategic self-talk interventions' positive effects on sport performance and performance-related processes are well documented, little is known regarding naturally occurring self-statements, or organic self-talk. Previously, eight discrete organic self-talk functions were identified, yet research concerning contextual and personal factors relating to these functions is still lacking. It is imperative to explore such factors to establish a holistic sport-specific self-talk model that determines the organic self-talk use in sport. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore the relationships between sport-related stress and coping, athletic identity, demographic and sport-related factors and the eight organic self-talk functions of psych-up, anxiety control, confidence, instruction, worry, disengagement, somatic fatigue and irrelevant. Thus, 216 NCAA student-athletes were recruited to participate in a two-wave internet survey. The PSS-Sport, AIMS and ASTQS questionnaires were used to measure sport-related stress and coping, athletic identity and the organic self-talk functions respectively. Eight linear multiple regressions were conducted to determine the relationship between the aforementioned variables and organic self-talk functions' frequencies. RM MANOVAs and moderation tests were conducted to compare stress, coping and self-talk functions in and out-of-season. Results indicate that stress was associated with all self-talk frequencies except confidence. Coping was associated with psych-up, confidence and worry. Athletic identity was associated with psych-up, confidence, instruction and disengagement frequencies. Age was associated with anxiety control and instruction self-talk. Lastly, sport type and division level were associated with disengagement and instruction self-talk respectively. No changes were recorded in and out of season. Implications and limitations are discussed.
