Book The Effects of Repeated Readings on Third Grade Students Reading Achievement and Attitudes

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Readings on Third Grade Students Reading Achievement and Attitudes written by Tennille Kasper-Scheriff and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of a reading strategy, repeated readings, on third grade students' reading achievement and attitudes. One hundred sixteen third grade students as members of six classrooms in one elementary school participated in this 10 week study. Using a quasi-experimental pretest posttest design, students' mean reading scores and mean reading attitude scores were evaluated. The Measures of Academic Progress test was used to collect data on students' reading achievement (Northwest Evaluation Association, 2009), and student attitudes toward reading were measured by the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) (McKenna & Kear, 1990). Data was analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between observed differences in mean scores of treatment and control groups. No significant differences were found for students receiving the repeated readings intervention compared to students who did not receive treatment. Additionally, data analysis from the ERAS revealed no significant differences in students' mean attitude reading scores between the control and experimental groups.

Book The Differential Effects of Three Variations of Repeated Readings Interventions on Core Literacy Components Among Third Graders who are Delayed Readers

Download or read book The Differential Effects of Three Variations of Repeated Readings Interventions on Core Literacy Components Among Third Graders who are Delayed Readers written by Timothy D. Badenhop and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Reading has long been regarded as the gateway to self-directed education. As students progress from the early to middle elementary years, curricula expect that they will transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Too often, however, students are left behind because they struggle to develop reading proficiency before this transition. With the understanding that they require early and intense intervention to ensure later academic success, finding the most effective and efficient methods to foster reading proficiency among struggling readers is critical. This study examined the differential effects of three variations of repeated readings (with traditional whole word drill, with word retell, and with both traditional whole word drill and word retell) on core literacy components among delayed third grade readers. After random assignment to these three conditions, student performance was analyzed on the constructs of oral reading fluency, oral reading accuracy, reading comprehension as measured by word retell and comprehension questions, and intervention efficiency. Findings indicated that there were few significant differences among the three conditions. Results did indicate that students in the traditional whole word drill and word retell condition improved significantly more in oral reading accuracy from initial to repeated reading than did students in the word retell condition. Results and limitations of the study are discussed, and directions for future research are recommended.

Book The Effects of Paired Reading on the Reading Fluency and Attitude of At risk Third Graders

Download or read book The Effects of Paired Reading on the Reading Fluency and Attitude of At risk Third Graders written by Elizabeth A. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research the effects of using paired reading at home on the reading fluency and attitude toward reading of at-risk third grade students. After attending a training session with the researcher at Taylor Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, six third graders and their parents were asked to implement the paired reading strategy at home for at least fifteen minutes four days a week for six weeks during the Fall trimester of the 2007-2008 school year. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Assessment (DIBELS), DIBELS Probes, and the Basic Reading Inventory were used as pretests and posttests. Students and parents were given surveys at the beginning and the end of the treatment period to measure changes in perceptions and attitudes. Findings indicated participation in paired reading at home improved student achievement in reading fluency and various aspects of perception and attitude toward reading in both parents and students.

Book Increasing Reading Fluency Using Repeated Readings with Third Grade Students

Download or read book Increasing Reading Fluency Using Repeated Readings with Third Grade Students written by Sarah Clymer and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if repeated readings would help increase fluency with third grade students. The repeated readings were introduced at the beginning of the 2006-2007 fall semester at Center Point-Urbana Elementary. Student self monitored their progress by recording words read per minute on Monday and words read per minute with the same passage on Friday. Students were assessed at the beginning of the study and at the end using the BRI assessment. All students increased their fluency rate throughout this nine week process. However, numerous variables may have added to students' success.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book The Effect of Fluency Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Third Grade Students

Download or read book The Effect of Fluency Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Third Grade Students written by Michelle Renee Oswald and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to implement fluency interventions and examine their effectiveness on comprehension with third grade students. Six students, identified by their AIMSweb fluency scores, were used in this study. Three students were given fluency interventions and their work was compared to three students who were not. For 10 weeks, three students were given fluency interventions for approximately 15 minutes a day, three times a week. The intervention used was Repeated Readings taken from the Florida Center for Reading Research website. The students' reading growth was assessed using AIMSweb R-CBM (Reading-Curriculum Based Measurement) and AIMSweb Maze Comprehension test. Students were compared to nationally normed average rate of improvement according to the AIMSweb Growth Table. After the study, the researcher concluded that fluency instruction had a positive effect on comprehension.
