Book excerpt: In their challenge-point framework (CPF) Guadagnoli and Lee's (2004) argue that learning is maximized when a person faces an optimal level of challenge during practice. It is suggested that challenge level can be manipulated through the combination of different practice variables. The purpose of this study was to investigate how practice schedule and self-controlled feedback frequency manipulations affect performance and learning of motor skills. Participants (n=96) attempted to learn three versions of a key-pressing task. The task consisted of pressing five computer keys in specified sequences in a goal criterion time. Participants were assigned to either a blocked practice schedule with self-controlled feedback (BLK-SC), a random practice schedule with selfcontrolled feedback (RND-SC), a blocked practice schedule with yoked feedback (BLK-YK), a random practice schedule with yoked feedback (RND-YK), a blocked practice schedule and 100 percent feedback (BLK-100), or a random practice schedule with 100 percent feedback (RND-100). Participants in the blocked conditions practiced 30 trials of each task according to a blocked practice schedule. Participants in the random conditions practiced 30 trial of each task according to a random practice schedule. Participants in the selfcontrolled feedback condition were allowed to choose whether or not to receive feedback on each trial. Yoked participants had their feedback schedule matched to a participant with similar characteristics in the self-control condition. Participants in the 100% feedback condition received feedback after every trial. Participants were also asked to complete the NASA Task Load Index (Hart & Staveland, 1988) and an adapted Perceived Competence for Learning scale (adapted from Williams & Deci, 1996) after the completion of the 5th and 90th trial. After 24 hr participants performed a retention test. The results indicated no difference between groups during retention or for the NASA-TLX and PCL scores. The feedback frequency analysis indicated no differences between BLKSC and RND-SC groups. In general, the findings of the present study show that the effects of practice schedule conditions can be offset by self-controlled feedback manipulations. They also suggest that a number of different combinations of practice schedules and feedback frequencies can lead to similar challenge levels.

Book excerpt: Research during the past few decades has demonstrated that allowing individuals to control some aspect of the instructional setting can facilitate motor learning. This facilitation has most commonly been referred to as the self-control effect. Self-control studies often include a yoked group. This group is meant to counterbalance the aspect of choice given to the self-control group. However, these groups pose a certain problem to the generalization of self-control--the procedure of yoking would never be utilized as a learning construct a real-world setting. Thus, there is a need to investigate the ecological validity of self-control in a more applied setting. Specifically, investigating the effect of implementing self-control in a setting where observation of other learners is inherently available (e.g. groups, teams). Participants were assigned based on when they volunteered for the study to one of five groups in order to learn a cup-stacking task. Four groups were crossing the two levels of the self-control factor, self-control (SC) and yoked (YK) with the two levels of observation factor, observation (O) and no observation (NO): SC-NO, YK-NO, SC-O, and YK-O. For each level of observation, the yoked participants were paired with self-control counterparts (e.g. SC-NO paired with YK-NO). A fifth group was created by pairing a second yoked group to the SC-NO and providing it with observation (e.g. YK2-O). Acquisition consisted of 30 practice trials. Approximately 24 hours later, participants returned to complete retention and transfer testing. Book excerpt: Research in the motor learning domain regarding the underlying mechanism of self-controlled feedback has speculated that learners who are given the option to control their feedback schedule may engage in deeper levels of information processing, yet no study has measured information processing during a self-controlled protocol. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-controlled feedback on information processing during the learning of a sequential timing task. Little known about the underlying mechanism of the self-control benefit. Participants were randomly assigned to self-control (SC) (n = 10) and yoked (YK) (n = 10) groups. SC participants were allowed to request feedback in the form of knowledge of results (KR) regarding their planning time (PT), segment times (ST), and overall movement times (MT) following any trial while YK participants received KR according to the schedule created by their SC counterparts. The acquisition phase consisted of six 10-trial blocks. Participants practiced a sequential key-pressing task similar to the one used by Chiviacowsky and Wulf (2002, 2005). Retention and transfer tests each consisted of 10 trials and were administered approximately 24 hours after acquisition. Retention procedures were identical to those used during acquisition, except no feedback was administered to either group. Transfer used the same procedures as retention with the exception of the task, which required different segment times. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if active and sedentary individuals differed in terms the effects of self-controlled feedback on the learning of a movement skill. The task consisted of a blindfolded beanbag toss using the non-preferred arm. Participants were prescreened according to their physical activity level using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (Craig et al., 2003). An equal number of active (A) and sedentary (S) participants were assigned to self-control (SC) and yoked (Y) feedback conditions, creating the four groups: Self-Control Active; Self-Control Sedentary; Yoked Active; and Yoked Sedentary. SC condition participants were provided feedback whenever they requested it, while Y condition participants received feedback according to the schedule created by a SC counterpart to whom they were yoked. The SC condition was more accurate that the Y condition during acquisition and transfer phases. The A condition was more accurate than the S condition during all phases of the experiment. Results of a post-experimental questionnaire indicated that participants in the SC condition asked for feedback mostly after what they perceived to be "good" trials. Participants in the Y condition indicated that they would have preferred to receive feedback after "good" trials. This study provided further support for the advantages of self-controlled feedback when learning motor skills, additionally showing benefits for both active and sedentary individuals. In addition, the results suggested that the provision of experimenter-controlled feedback (i.e., in the Y condition) to sedentary learners degraded immediate performance. While this effect was not present during assessment of learning, it may have implications regarding the motivation of sedentary individuals to engage in practice when learning movement skills.
