Book excerpt: "Parental involvement uses a combination of commitment and active participation of the parent to the school and student. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of parental involvement on student reading levels. It provided an analysis of how parental involvement has an impact on students reading fluency. Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, smoothly and with expression (Hoffman, 2018). It measures word fluency, read per minute. By using word fluency activities, students were assessed for their understanding of phonics and decoding ability by reading nonsense words. There are many ways to promote fluency in young readers. For the purpose of this study, parental involvement was defined as parents reading with or to students five nights per week for ten minutes. In this study, It is hopeful that educators will be able to use the hypothesis of 'A student's fluency levels will rise with increased parental involvement.' It is hopeful that educators will be able to use the results of the data used in the study to educate parents on the importance of parental involvement. Students enrolled in Cleveland Road Elementary School, which is a Title I school were studied. The majority of students were not on grade level at the beginning of the school year. The majority of the students is in the study were not reading on grade Level and, while not claiming causation, it may be important to know that many of the parents of the students experience economic disadvantages. During past parent teacher conferences, parents mentioned that their income did not allow them to buy books to supplement reading instruction at home. Therefore, it could be noted that the students were lacking or falling behind in reading because they did not have the proper reading materials at home. In the Clarke County School District, the research problem for this study described the need for the school district to consider the impact parental involvement had on academic areas, such as reading, and how providing books for parents regularly could close reading gaps. However, little attention was given to the parental involvement and the effects it had on students' reading proficiency"--Pages 5-6.
