Book The Future of Leadership Development

Download or read book The Future of Leadership Development written by Susan Elaine Murphy and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-09-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership in today's organizations is a tough business. Organizational leaders face a number of challenges as their jobs, and the world around them, become increasingly complex. Trends, such as organizational "delayering," rapid technological advances, and increased employee empowerment require that leaders adapt their techniques and styles of leadership to meet these new challenges. Consequently, there has been an explosion of interest in leadership in recent years as researchers and management educators struggle to understand the process of leadership development, how it operates, and what characteristics make effective leaders. Born of these questions, the 11th Annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership Conference at Claremont McKenna College brought together an impressive slate of scholars whose theories, research, and cutting-edge techniques are now gathered together in this impressive volume. Each chapter asks and answers questions about the current state of the field while providing future direction for research to help bridge the gap between leadership researchers and leadership development practitioners. Notable topics include chapters on "e-leadership" and leadership within the "virtual" organization, exploring 360-degree feedback, the importance of "social capital," and a comprehensive analysis of the well-researched theory of Leader Member Exchange.

Book Understanding Employees Experiences of Leadership training Programs Within a Community College

Download or read book Understanding Employees Experiences of Leadership training Programs Within a Community College written by Lise-Pauline Milton Barnett and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviors of an organization's leaders create a clarity and unity of purpose within the organization to create a more cohesive organization (Davies, Hides & Casey, 2001, p. 1028). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of employees in leadership-training programs and how a community college can invest in leadership training to create a sustainable leadership model. To understand leadership training better, the researcher employed a qualitative approach. The researcher used demographic data and content from an employee engagement survey to create open-ended questions for the interviews. The researcher investigated how a community college develops a collaborative leadership model that is sustainable after investing in leadership-training programs for its employees. Two research sub-questions were investigated to address the main question: what experiences do community college employees have related to leadership-training programs provided by the institution? In order to go deeper into this question about their experiences, the following two sub-questions were explored: (1) How did the employees' experiences influence their perception of success at the institution? (2) Did the leadership-training programs increase the employees' abilities to collaborate within the institution? These interviews provided the researcher with insight into the shared experiences of the participants and their feelings on employees' success and collaboration within a community college. The themes of follow-up training, relevancy, promotion within, fear of retribution, valuing employees, conflict resolution, collaboration, and civility were common throughout the interviews. These are important themes that will help a community college with professional and leadership development.

Book Learning for Leadership

Download or read book Learning for Leadership written by Yael Hellman and published by Association for Talent Development. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are tasked with developing effective leaders, "teaching" just isn't going to be enough! Teaching leadership can be one of the most fulfilling, as well as challenging, tasks of a trainer. Learning for Leadership builds on foundational learning and development concepts and practices to help trainers and facilitators develop programs that meet these challenges and turn learners into leaders. Yael Hellman illustrates how a truly "facilitative" classroom is structured, and she shows why it is the best environment to learn leadership skills. The author does so through the lens of group dynamics and her own experience facilitating leadership courses for the Los Angeles Police Department. The facilitative approach invites learners to practice leadership by being accountable for reaching learning objectives, taking initiative to solve problems, and nurturing their own ideas rather than leaning on authority. This book includes everything you need to develop a facilitative leadership development course, including: icebreakers or warm-ups to focus learners on the session's agenda interactive instruction models to help them master content ideas for group work, including collective projects; experiential exercises or games and joint activities that immediately apply new material wrap-ups to summarize one session and link it to an upcoming one. Facilitation integrates techniques from many adult learning approaches to produce creative, transformative, practical learning and leaders who are prepared to lead.

Book Leadership Training and the Development of Socially Responsible Leadership in College Students

Download or read book Leadership Training and the Development of Socially Responsible Leadership in College Students written by Teela A. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how participation in a leadership training program facilitated the development and practice of the eight core values of the social change model of leadership development in college students. The study included three directors and 15 students from different ethnicities, and both genders from a small private Christian university in the Deep South. Research questions focused on student perceptions of how they had developed the skills outlined in the social change model of leadership and how others perceived the students practiced these skills in roles as leaders. Students completed the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale-Revision 2 (SRLS-R2) to reveal the depth at which they perceived they embodied socially responsible leadership. Interviews allowed study participants to elaborate on the leadership activities at the college and expound upon the eight core values of the Social Change Model (SCM). Survey results revealed that students perceived they possessed five out of eight of the core values with a mean rating of 4 or higher. Commitment (4.75) received the highest mean score. Change received the lowest mean score (3.56). Students stated that the project-based nature of the program, retreat opportunities, team-building activities, and working with people who used different thought processes assisted with their growth as a socially responsible leader. Director interviews revealed how students from the leadership training program demonstrated socially responsible leadership in the organizations where they had served as leaders.

Book Evolving Leaders A Model for Promoting Leadership Development in Programs

This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although leadership development is widely acknowledged as important, our understanding of it is largely implicit. This has made programs that seek to promote it difficult to design and implement, and challenging to evaluate effectively. The model presented in this report specifies how programs can affect a key aspect of leadership development--the psychological development of the individual.

Book An Evaluation of the Outcomes of a Leadership Development Program

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Outcomes of a Leadership Development Program written by Cynthia Denise McCauley and published by Center for Creative Leadership. This book was released on 1994 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents findings of a study that examined the outcomes of the Chief Executive Officer Leadership Development Program, which was developed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). The 1-year program was comprised of classroom sessions, coaching, journal writing, and learning projects. Data were derived from: (1) a pre-program survey and questionnaire of 38 participating superintendents; and (2) post-program interviews with the 38 participants and their facilitators, a post-questionnaire completed by participants, and analysis of student journals. Findings indicate that the superintendents improved their leadership competencies and self-awareness. Of the four superintendent subgroups that were identified, two--the New Perspectives subgroup and the Role Expansion subgroup--were more affected than administrators who were already highly effective or more control-oriented. The program, compared to other studies of this nature, resulted in two more prominent outcomes: the view of leadership as a shared responsibility and a broader view of their professional role. Implications of the findings for evaluation of leadership-development programs are: the use of multiple methods enriches analysis; evaluation studies should expect highly individualized outcomes; and evaluation studies provide opportunities for understanding the leadership-development process. Eleven tables and five figures are included. Appendices contain copies of the exit interviews and statistics on subgroup differences. Contains 53 references. (LMI)

Book The Effect of Leadership Courses on Community College Student Success

Download or read book The Effect of Leadership Courses on Community College Student Success written by Lisa Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between community college Leadership (LEA) courses and student success. This study compared students who took LEA courses to students who did not take LEA courses. This study employed a quantitative causal-comparative research design with one independent variable (leadership courses) and two dependent variables (GPA and completion). The research design was a between-subjects design. The grouping variables were ACT scores, race, and gender, and the groups consisted of students who took two LEA courses in two semesters and students who took at least two semesters but did not take LEA courses. A chi-square test was performed to determine the relationship between LEA courses and student completion. Results of this test indicated a statistically significant difference with students who completed LEA courses performing better across all categories. An independent samples t-test was conducted to determine the relationship between LEA courses and students’ GPA. Results for this test revealed that students who completed LEA courses had significantly higher GPAs across all groupings. The results of this study had implications that participation in leadership courses improve students’ GPAs and increase completion rates.

Book Leadership Behaviors Gained as a Result of Involvement in a Community College Student Leader Program

Download or read book Leadership Behaviors Gained as a Result of Involvement in a Community College Student Leader Program written by Chanda M. Torres and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess whether participation in a community college student leader program had an effect on the leadership behaviors of students based on five (5) practices measured by a student leadership practices inventory. By assessing these leadership behaviors, the community college was able to determine the effectiveness of the program and ways to improve the program's curriculum. This study addressed the following: 1) whether students who participated in a student leader program in a community college showed significant growth in leadership behaviors; 2) whether the growth in leadership behaviors of students who participated in a student leader program in a community college were significantly different from each other in regard to gender; 3) whether the growth in leadership behaviors of students who participated in a student leader program in a community college were significantly different from each other in regard to age. The student Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) developed by Kouzes and Posner (2002) was used as the main instrument in this study. The student Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is a questionnaire with thirty (30) behavioral statements--six (6) for each of The Five Practices. The population of this study consisted of 62 student leaders who were participants in a student leader program at a community college. A pre LPI was given to 62 student leaders in the beginning of the school term. A post LPI was given to 62 student leaders at the end of the school term. Thirteen of the original student leaders dropped out of the program and were replaced by new student leaders. Thus, the total number of useable inventories for data input in this study was 49; this yielded a 79% return rate. This study supports the research that students who were involved in a leadership program gained leadership behaviors. In comparing the student leaders' pretest and posttest scores of the LPI, it showed that there was a significant difference in each leadership behavior. These leadership behaviors were: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart. The results of this study also showed no significant difference in the student leaders' scores in the LPI in relation to the student's age group. According to Astin (1993), the student's age at the time of college entry was not significantly associated with changes in Leadership scores. This evidence supports the argument that increases in leadership skills during undergraduate years is associated with the college experience rather than the student's maturation. There were no significant differences between the male and female student leaders in regard to the five leadership practices with the exception of the leadership practice Challenging the Process. In this study, the male student leaders scored higher, 24.79, than the female student leaders, 22.37, in Challenging the Process. The focus group in this study highlighted the leadership behaviors the student leaders gained as a result of their involvement in the student leader program. Not only did the students grow in the leadership behaviors measured by the LPI, they also gained other leadership skills. In regard to their growth as a student leader, the students felt that they grew in many different areas. The opportunity allowed them to network with students, faculty, administration and staff, and gain leadership skills. These leadership skills included: listening skills, communication skills, stress management, multitasking and customer service. The students also believed in the importance of taking initiative, practicing patience and developing others.
