Book Development and Learning

Download or read book Development and Learning written by Lynn S. Liben and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume juxtaposes two different domains of developmental theory: the Piagetian approach and the information-processing approach. Articles by experts in both fields discuss how concepts of development and learning, traditionally approached through cognitive-developmental theories such as Piaget's, are analyzed from the perspective of a task analytic, information-processing approach.

Book The Effects of Early Childhood Curricula on Readiness for Reading in Kindergarten

Download or read book The Effects of Early Childhood Curricula on Readiness for Reading in Kindergarten written by Amy Elizabeth Tollefson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two curricula currently used in the School Readiness and Head Start programs on kindergarten readiness in the area of literacy. The School Readiness program uses the Between the Lions (Public Broadcasting System) curriculum and Head Start uses the HighScope (HighScope Educational Research Foundation) curriculum. Thirty-two children who are eligible for kindergarten entrance in Fall 2013 participated in the day-to-day instructional strategies provided by these curriculua during the 2012-2013 school year. In the spring of 2013, the children were assessed in print knowledge, emergent writing, and linguistic awareness using the Get Ready to Read! screening tool. Only children whose parents signed the informed consent were included in this study. The author compared the curricula and concluded that while both programs showed similar progress on emergent writing and linguistic awaremess, the skills-based approach of Between the Lions appeared more effective in teaching print awareness.

Book Cutting Off Kindergarten

Download or read book Cutting Off Kindergarten written by Jonathan Ruffus and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many parents, a child’s completion of kindergarten is a milestone that represents the foundation of formal education. Over many decades, theorists and researchers have attempted to identify the best circumstances that maximize early learning. Therefore, the age at which children enter kindergarten has been a topic of considerable debate. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a relatively late kindergarten entry age cutoff date of December 1 on the development of children’s reading skills during their first year of schooling. Additionally, the relationship between student age and gender on literacy achievement was investigated. Archival data was used for the current study, which represented scores from a standardized literacy assessment. Two-way multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were conducted to test for significant differences between group means as well as an interaction effect between age and gender. Results revealed that age had a statistically significant impact on initial literacy performance, but not growth over the course of the school year. There was no evidence of a statistically significant interaction between kindergarten entry age and gender, nor did gender have a statistically significant impact on literacy achievement. Overall, findings demonstrate that while school entry age did put younger kindergarten students at an initial academic disadvantage, it dissipated over time as they demonstrated typical skill growth.

Book Reconsidering Children s Early Development and Learning

Download or read book Reconsidering Children s Early Development and Learning written by United States. National Education Goals Panel. Goal 1 Technical Planning Group and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, the National Education Goals were established by the President and the 50 state governors. Great attention has been given to Goal 1, dubbed the "readiness" goal: By the year 2000, all children in America will start school ready to learn. The Goal 1 Resource Technical Planning Groups were asked to suggest ways in which Goal 1 could be measured. The purpose of this document is to further amplify the dimensions of early learning and development used by the National Educational Goals Panel to measure progress toward Goal 1. The following five dimensions are discussed: (1) "Physical Well-Being and Motor Development"; (2) "Social and Emotional Development," serving as the foundation for relationships which give meaning to school experience; (3) "Approaches toward Learning," referring to the inclinations, dispositions, or styles that reflect ways children become involved with learning; (4) "Language Development"; and (5) "Cognition and General Knowledge." For each of the dimensions, a rationale; general definition; the relationship to individual, cultural, and contextual variation; and a summary are given. The report concludes with a discussion of underlying issues, implications, and action steps. (Contains 83 references.) (BGC)

Book Kindergarten Entrance Age

Download or read book Kindergarten Entrance Age written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the issue of whether or not kindergarten entrance age makes a difference in school success. Some parents delay their child's kindergarten entrance. Students whose kindergarten entrance was delayed are one year or more older than peers in the same classroom, which may give them an advantage (through advanced development) or a disadvantage (through delayed exposure to academics). This study fills a gap in the current literature because it used a longitudinal design and examined the difference in scores over time with the consideration over potential covariates. The specific research questions were: Are there academic advantages in delaying a child's kindergarten entrance as evidenced by academic assessments in third grade, fifth grade, and eighth grade after taking potential covariates into account? Secondly, do students whose kindergarten entrance was delayed, exhibit different behaviors in kindergarten after controlling for potential covariates? This study used the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS), Kindergarten (K) Class of 1998-1999 dataset to answer the research questions. The ECLS-K is a large-scale and longitudinal dataset providing nationally representative and generalizable data from approximately 16,000 kindergarten students. Analysis of covariance was used to answer the two research questions. The data analysis to answer the first research question examined the change over time in reading, mathematics, and general knowledge assessments administered in grades kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and eighth. The second research question examined change over time in problematic behaviors as reported by the teacher. The results of this study determined that children whose kindergarten entrance was delayed had an initial advantage in kindergarten in reading, mathematics, general knowledge, and they had fewer problematic behaviors. However, the younger students had a significantly steeper slope of learning. The consideration of covariates did not affect the results. The findings of this study have implications regarding delaying a child's kindergarten entrance, policy decisions, teachers' delivery of instruction, and curricular expectations in early childhood classrooms.
