Book The Effects of Ion assisted Deposition on the Surface Roughness of Evaporated Thin Films

Download or read book The Effects of Ion assisted Deposition on the Surface Roughness of Evaporated Thin Films written by Michael S. Jin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effects of ion-assisted deposition (IAD) on the surface roughness of electron-beam evaporated films were studied. The experimental study was conducted with an 8 cm Kaufman type ion source in a 28 inch coating chamber. The investigated film materials were Ta2O5, ZrO2, and TiO2. In order to investigate the effects of the IAD process on the surface quality of the films, the surface statistics of the resulting film samples were examined. The rms roughness of the film surfaces was assessed with a Talystep mechanical profilometer and a total integrated scattering (TIS) apparatus. The profilometric data from the Talystep measurements were used to calculate the characteristic functions of the film surfaces. The height distribution, the autocovariance, and the power spectral density of the surface profile functions were evaluated numerically. The thin film nucleation and growth phenomena was reviewed in order to identify the physical interactions between the ions and the depositing molecules which lead to the changes in the physical and optical properties of the IAD processed films. The ion-assisted film samples were prepared at ion energies and arrival rates which led to the observed changes in other IAD study reports. The changes induced in the films were initially verified with a wideband optical transmission monitor which gave information on the transmission characteristics and the environmental stability of the deposited films. The changes in the microstructure of the film samples were examined by transmission electron microscopy and by x-ray and electron diffraction methods. The results of the analyses were compared to determine the effects of each set of IAD parameters on the overall quality of the resulting films"--Page ii.

Book Low Energy Ion Assisted Film Growth

Download or read book Low Energy Ion Assisted Film Growth written by Agustin Gonzalez-elipe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introductory manual for Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD) procedures of thin films. It is addressed to researchers, post-graduates and even engineers with little or no experience in the techniques of thin film deposition. It reviews the basic concepts related to the interaction of low energy ion beams with materials. The main procedures used for IAD synthesis of thin films and the main effects of ion beam bombardment on growing films, such as densification, stress, mixing, surface flattening and changes in texture are critically discussed. A description of some of the applications of IAD methods and a review of the synthesis by IAD of diamond-like carbon and cubic-boron nitride complete the book.

Book The ion assisted deposition of optical thin films

Download or read book The ion assisted deposition of optical thin films written by James D. Targove and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The columnar microstructure of most thermally evaporated thin films detrimentally affects many of their properties through a reduction in packing density. In this work, we have investigated ion-assisted deposition as a means of disrupting this columnar growth for a number of coating materials. A Kaufman hot-cathode ion source bombarded thermally evaporated films with low-energy (

Book Engineering Thin Films and Nanostructures with Ion Beams

Download or read book Engineering Thin Films and Nanostructures with Ion Beams written by Emile Knystautas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While ion-beam techniques have been used to create thin films in the semiconductor industry for several decades, these methods have been too costly for other surface treatment applications. However, as manufacturing devices become increasingly smaller, the use of a directed-energy ion beam is finding novel industrial applications that require the custom tailoring of new materials and devices, including magnetic storage devices, photonics, opto-electronics, and molecular transport. Engineering Thin Films and Nanostructures with Ion Beams offers a thorough narrative of the recent advances that make this technology relevant to current and future applications. Featuring internationally recognized researchers, the book compiles their expertise in a multidimensional source that: Highlights the mechanisms and visual evidence of the effects of single-ion impacts on metallic surfaces Considers how ion-beam techniques can help achieve higher disk-drive densities Introduces gas-cluster ion-beam technology and reviews its precedents Explains how ion beams are used to aggregate metals and semiconductors into nanoclusters with nonlinear optical properties Addresses current challenges in building equipment needed to produce nanostructures in an industrial setting Examines the combination of ion-beam techniques, particularly with physical vapor deposition Delineates the fabrication of nanopillars, nanoflowers, and interconnected nanochannels in three dimensions by using atomic shadowing techniques Illustrates the production of nanopores of varying dimensions in polymer films, alloys, and superconductors using ion-beam irradiation Shows how fingerprints can be made more reliable as forensic evidence by recoil-mixing them into the substrate using ion beams From the basics of the ion-beam modification of materials to state-of-the-art applications, Engineering Th

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, thin films are near-ubiquitous and are utilised in a very wide range of industrially and scientifically important areas. These include familiar everyday instances such as anti-reflective coatings on ophthalmic lenses, smartphone optics, photovoltaics, decorative, and tool coatings. A range of somewhat more exotic applications also exists, such as astronomical instrumentation (e.g., ultra-low loss dielectric mirrors and beam splitters in gravitational wave detectors, such as laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO)), gas sensing, medical devices and implants, and accelerator coatings (e.g., coatings for the large hadron collider (LHC), and compact linear collider (CLIC) experiments at European organization for nuclear research (CERN)). This Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers working in any area within this highly diverse field to share and exchange their latest research findings. The Special Issue contains novel studies encompassing material characterisation techniques, a range of thin-film coating deposition processes and applications of such technology.
