Johnson Q.M.E. examines the impact of three reasoning skills-number sense, structure sense, and abstract reasoning-on algebra and geometry. The study concentrates its efforts on data compiled from more than twenty researchers in this area, an extensive annotated bibliography, and work done at fictisciously named Union High School, real school classes consisting of 48 math students and eight math teachers. Through the efforts of this study, Dr. Johnson determined that algebra relies on abstract reasoning and structure sense, while geometry does not. Moreover, Dr. Johnson observed that further instruction needs to be given to teachers on communicating the three reasoning skills, as the teachers studied were not sufficiently knowledgeable in these areas. With teacher improvements, students in non-sufficient school systems could better excel in mathematics. About the Author Dr. Johnson holds two bachelors in sciences; three master's degrees, one of which is in Math Education Curriculum, and a doctorate degree. She attributes her success to her parents and sisters. This is her second publication.

Book excerpt: A number of recent efforts to improve mathematics instruction have focused on professional development activities designed to promote instruction that is consistent with professional standards such as those published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This paper describes the results of a study investigating the degree to which teachers' use of instructional practices aligned with these reforms is related to improve student achievement, after controlling for student background characteristics and prior achievement. In particular, the authors focus on the effects of curriculum on the relationship between instructional practices and student outcomes. They collected data on tenth-grade students during the 1997-98 academic year. Some students were enrolled in integrated math courses designed to be consistent with the reforms, whereas others took the more traditional algebra and geometry sequence. Use of instructional practices were measured through a teacher questionnaire, and student achievement was measured using both the multiple-choice and open-ended components of the Stanford achievement tests. Use of standards-based or reform practices was unrelated to achievement in the more traditional algebra and geometry courses. These results suggest that changes to instructional practices may need to be coupled with changes in curriculum to realize effects on student achievement.

Book excerpt: In 2012, the President’s Council on the Advancement of Science and Technology (PCAST) predicted one million jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) would go unfilled in the United States due to the lack of interested and qualified graduates matriculating in American universities, colleges, and technical schools (PCAST, 2012). In order to bolster interest and proficiency in STEM, research suggests instructional pedagogy incorporate experiential learning focused on solving real societal problems that are relevant to learners. Few studies have investigated the effects of such pedagogy within the context of a secondary-level, geometry course. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design was employed to determine the effect of an experiential learning course, Geometry In Construction, on secondary student achievement and motivation in geometry. Data were collected from 181 secondary students in ninth and tenth grade attending a large, suburban, Midwestern, public high school. Participants experienced a full academic year of instruction in either Geometry In Construction or a traditional geometry course. Achievement in geometry was measured using scores from a Missouri Geometry End of Course Practice Exam. Motivation to learn geometry was measured using John Keller’s Course Interest Survey (Keller, 2010) based on Keller’s ARCS model of motivation (Keller, 1987a). Analysis of the data indicates significantly higher achievement in geometry and motivation to learn geometry for students experiencing the Geometry in Construction curriculum. The effect is more pronounced among females. On this basis, it is recommended that geometry curricula incorporate experiential learning focused on solving real problems that are relevant to learners. Further research is needed to determine how this instructional model could be applied to other courses in order to improve interest and preparation for STEM careers.
