The mental skills training of imagery combined with positive self-review has emerged as a possible device to improve athletic performance. This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of imagery and positive self-review on basketball game performance. Four male intercollegiate basketball players were chosen to participate in a single-subject, multiple baseline across subjects design. Baseline percentages of correct performance were compared to post-intervention percentages. Evidence indicated that the intervention was effective across all four participants. Results indicated a mean Win Score (Berri, Schmidt, & Brooks, 2006) increase of .74 across the four athletes. Social validation was also evaluated through exit questionnaires. All of the participants indicated that they enjoyed the intervention and felt that it improved their overall performance.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In the sports domain, research has become an essential part of how we understand the psychological factors that play a key role in maximizing performance. Previous research has suggested that an individual’s performance can be highly influenced by the psychological variable of self-efficacy (e.g., Bandura, 1997; Calmels & Fournier, 2001). Self-efficacy has been used to describe individuals’ perceived capability of achieving a certain level of performance in the domain of sport (Feltz, 1998). Previous research has also demonstrated that the tendency of athletes to interpret their imagery as either facilitative or debilitative affects specific constructs known to enhance or impede sport performance (Nordin & Cumming, 2005; Quinton et al., 2016; Short et al., 2002). As a result, this study aimed to evaluate imagery more broadly by including different types of involuntary imagery (i.e. spontaneous, intrusive). Affective states of individuals when performing an activity is one of the most important variables for determining general self-efficacy (Bandura, 1994). The relationship between self-efficacy and MG-M imagery has also been closely examined, which suggests that the use of MG-M imagery is beneficial for increasing athletes’ self-efficacy levels (Martin et al., 1999; Moritz at al., 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive relationship between imagery use (i.e., MG-M, spontaneous, and intrusive) and self-efficacy with affect as the mediator in collegiate athletes. It was hypothesized that affect would significantly mediate the relationship between imagery use and self-efficacy in collegiate athletes. Results found that positive affect significantly mediates the relationship between MG-M imagery and self-efficacy. The present findings suggest that positive affect is an essential construct for how MG-M imagery use effects self-efficacy levels in collegiate athletes.The implementation of MG-M imagery-based interventions may be used as a way to effectively increase an athlete’s self-efficacy perceptions.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a psychological skills package involving goal-setting and imagery on the enhancement of youth basketball players' game performance. In addition, players' arousal levels were monitored to ascertain whether improved performance corresponded with a decrease in arousal level prior to ames. A single-subject multiple baseline across individuals design was utilized to assess the participants' game performance. The participants were four youth male basketball players. The treatment consisted of five training sessions. The dependant variable, cutting off the baseline, is a skill utilized by the athlete in the defensive zone when an offensive player attempts to dribble the ball to the basket. The results of the raw scores were plotted according to the percentage of correct occurrences of the desired behavior, and assessed visually in order to determine whether a treatment effect had occurred across participants. The results of this study provided support for the hypothesis that utilizing an intervention package consisting of goal-setting and imagery improved the defensive skill performance of youth age basketball players in actual game situations. While these psychological skills did improve game performance, they were not a replacement for performing the actual skill, and should be done in conjunction with the actual skill to achieve the best results. Little support was found for the hypothesis that the intervention ackage would decrease the participants' arousal level. The social validation assessment completed by the athletes clearly indicated that the treatment package was beneficial to all participants.
