Featuring an innovative structure divided by prepositions, this brand-new edition moves away from essentializing boundaries, and instead seeks to create synergies between different schools of leadership. Book The Social Psychology of Female Male Relations

Download or read book The Social Psychology of Female Male Relations written by Richard D. Ashmore and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Psychology of Female-Male Relations: A Critical Analysis of Central Concepts covers the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of individuals in social interaction and explicitly considers women and men in relation to one another - as individuals, as representatives of social categories, and as significant social groups. Chapter One lays out the parameters of the social psychology of female-male relations. Chapter Two contains two major insights: that gender identity is a complex, multifaceted construct and that the structure and degree of differentiation of gender identity develop and change over the life course. Chapters Three and Four present a relatively general cognitive social-psychological framework for two important constructs, sex stereotypes and gender-related attitudes. Chapter Five offers a critique of analyses that explain the behavior of women and men in close, personal relationships in terms of sex differences in the individual dispositions of the participants. Chapter Six presents a strong and straightforward critique of the current usage of the term sex role to describe a global set of behavioral prescriptions that apply to all women and to all men. Chapter Seven presents a comprehensive review of research on gender-related patterns of behavior in task groups that cannot be found elsewhere. The concluding chapter summarizes points made in earlier chapters and offers a set of notes toward a theory of female-male relations. Social scientists (especially, psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists) doing research on women, on men, or on women and men in relationships or in social interaction.

Book Sex and Gender Effects on Power Status Dominance and Leadership An Interdisciplinary Look at Human and Other Mammalian Societies

Download or read book Sex and Gender Effects on Power Status Dominance and Leadership An Interdisciplinary Look at Human and Other Mammalian Societies written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unequal power and status between the sexes usually translates into one sex monopolizing valuable resources and exercising control at the expense of the other. These inequalities not only have negative consequences for the fitness and wellbeing of the underpowered sex but also hinder the path to peaceful and prosperous societies. Intersexual power refers to an asymmetry in the degree of control that one sex exerts over the other. It can arise, for example, from sex differences in social dominance (i.e., imposed by threat or force), leverage (i.e., conferred by the possession of a resource that cannot be taken by force such as knowledge or fertilizable eggs), motivation, and (in humans in particular) social norms and privileged positions in society.

Book The Relationship of Gender and Perceived Sex Role Identity to the Leadership Style Range and Adaptability of Selected Graduate Students

Download or read book The Relationship of Gender and Perceived Sex Role Identity to the Leadership Style Range and Adaptability of Selected Graduate Students written by James Keith Wall and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship and strength of association of the two independent variables of gender (male, female) and perceived sex role identity (masculine, androgynous, feminine, and undifferentiated) on the leadership style, leadership range (number of back-up styles), and leadership adaptability (effectiveness) of nonforeign graduate students at a Land Grant Institution. A sex role scale (The Personal Attribute Questionnaire) and a leadership scale (The Leader Effectiveness and Adaptability Description) were administered to a randomly selected sample of 700 (350 males, 350 females) graduate students. Usable responses were obtained from 65 percent (455) of the subjects. Chi-square, Cramer's V, and lambda analyses were performed on the categorical data. A significant relationship (.05 level) and low strength of association was found between males and females and their selection of a primary leadership style and their leadership range or the number of support styles. Males tended to select an instrumental (task oriented) and females an expressive (relationship oriented) primary style and males in this study tended to utilize a broader range of back-up or support styles. No significant difference or strength of relationship was found between gender and effectiveness. In terms of perceived sex role identity alone, no significant difference or strength of relationship was found in leadership style, range, or effectiveness. When gender and sex role identity were combined, stronger significant differences were found in the selection of a primary leadership style (.05 to .01) and leadership range (.05 to .02). Also, when combined, a significant difference (.05) was found in effectiveness which was not observed when gender and sex role identity were examined separately. There was no support in this study that androgynous persons (those high in both expressive and instrumental orientations) were any more flexible (as measured by range) or effective (as measured by adaptability) than nonandrogynous persons. The findings further suggest that sex role studies which do not differentiate by gender may, in fact, be measuring primarily the effect of gender and not sex role identity. Recommendations for further research were suggested by the findings. 530 Also available on the World Wide Web.

Book Validity Generalization

Download or read book Validity Generalization written by Kevin R. Murphy and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the first wide-ranging critical review of validity generalization (VG)--a method that has dominated the field since the publication of Schmidt and Hunter's (1977) paper "Development of a General Solution to the Problem of Validity Generalization." This paper and the work that followed had a profound impact on the science and practice of applied psychology. The research suggests that fundamental relationships among tests and criteria, and the constructs they represent are simpler and more regular than they appear. Looking at the history of the VG model and its impact on personnel psychology, top scholars and leading researchers of the field review the accomplishments of the model, as well as the continuing controversies. Several chapters significantly extend the maximum likelihood estimation with existing models for meta analysis and VG. Reviewing 25 years of progress in the field, this volume shows how the model can be extended and applied to new problems and domains. This book will be important to researchers and graduate students in the areas of industrial organizational psychology and statistics.

Book What s in a Leader

Download or read book What s in a Leader written by Gina M. Lawton and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women often combat stereotypes portraying their inability to lead effectively within an organization. The current paper explores this intersection of gender, attractiveness, and leadership demeanor on followers' perceptions of leadership competence and likeability. Attractiveness is a physical reminder of a woman's femininity and could create conflict if a female leader adopted masculine leadership traits (Bosak & Sczesny, 2011; Rudman, Moss-Rascusin, Phelan, & Nauts, 2012). A series of hypotheses predict that attractive agentic female leaders will be rated more negatively than unattractive agentic female leaders, attractive communal leaders, or unattractive communal leaders. The study utilized a 2 (gender: male vs. female) x 2 (attractiveness: unattractive vs. attractive) x 2 (demeanor: agentic vs. communal) factorial design. The participants (N = 232) read vignettes that manipulated the leader's leadership style, gender, and attractiveness. After reading the scenario, participants rated the leader's likeability and competence. Findings indicate that leaders who engaged in an agentic leadership style were less liked than leaders who engaged in a communal leadership style, regardless of attractiveness or gender. Attractive agentic male leaders received higher likeability ratings than unattractive agentic males. Therefore, leadership style and attractiveness may play a role in subordinates' perceptions of successful leadership.

Book Social Groups in Action and Interaction

Download or read book Social Groups in Action and Interaction written by Charles Stangor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Groups in Action and Interaction reviews and analyzes the human group as it operates to create both social good and, potentially, social harm. It summarizes current knowledge and contemporary research, with real-world examples in succinct yet engaging chapters, to help students understand and predict group behavior. Unlike other texts, the book considers a wide range of topics—such as conformity, leadership, task performance, social identity, prejudice, and discrimination—from both an intragroup and an intergroup perspective. By looking at behavior both within and between groups, it bridges the gap between these interconnected approaches. The second edition is thoroughly updated to include new discussion of the biology and neuroscience of group formation, recent developments in social identity theory, and recent advances in the study of social networks. It also includes questions for review and discussion in the classroom. It provides the most comprehensive and essential resource for courses on group dynamics and behavior.

Book The Effect of Gender on the Evaluation of a Leader

Download or read book The Effect of Gender on the Evaluation of a Leader written by Suzanne Verhulp and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper tests the effect of gender on the evaluation of a leader. It is assumed in the literature that females are differently evaluated based on their gender. Different feminine and masculine leadership styles are included to test for differences. Not only the effect of the gender of the leader, but also the effect of the gender of the evaluator is included. Furthermore, some supposedly gender related personality characteristics are included the test their importance. A questionnaire is distributed to gather data. There are three versions of the questionnaire, with the only difference that the gender of the leader is manipulated. Different analyses are performed to test the effect of gender on the evaluation of a leader. The results of this study show that not only the gender of the leader influences the evaluation of a leader, but also the gender of the evaluator. Besides this, no clear indications for lower evaluations of female leaders are found.
