Book Schedules of Reinforcement

Download or read book Schedules of Reinforcement written by B. F. Skinner and published by B. F. Skinner Foundation. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contingent relationship between actions and their consequences lies at the heart of Skinner’s experimental analysis of behavior. Particular patterns of behavior emerge depending upon the contingencies established. Ferster and Skinner examined the effects of different schedules of reinforcement on behavior. An extraordinary work, Schedules of Reinforcement represents over 70,000 hours of research primarily with pigeons, though the principles have now been experimentally verified with many species including human beings. At first glance, the book appears to be an atlas of schedules. And so it is, the most exhaustive in existence. But it is also a reminder of the power of describing and explaining behavior through an analysis of measurable and manipulative behavior-environment relations without appealing to physiological mechanisms in the brain. As en exemplar and source for the further study of behavioral phenomena, the book illustrates the scientific philosophy that Skinner and Ferster adopted: that a science is best built from the ground up, from a firm foundation of facts that can eventually be summarized as scientific laws.

Book The Effects of Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior on Response Persistence

Download or read book The Effects of Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior on Response Persistence written by Kayla C. Crook and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the effects differential reinforcement of alternative behavior on response persistence. A total of four participants from a local 2nd grade classroom participated in this study. A two component multiple schedule that included baseline (i.e., reinforcement of a target response) and DRA (i.e., reinforcement of an alternative response and reinforcement of the target response) conditions was conducted. Attempts were made to keep rates of reinforcement as similar as possible across components. Extinction was then implemented in the context associated with each component, and response persistence was measured. Results indicated three distinct patterns of responding: 1) alternative behavior was never emitted during the DRA component (two participants), 2) only the alternative behavior was emitted during the DRA component (one participant), and 3) both the target and the alternative behaviors were emitted during the DRA component (one participant). Overall, the results of this study indicated that DRA could result in inadvertent strengthening of target behavior. However, that strengthening may be mitigated if reinforcer rates are similar.

Book Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior

Download or read book Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior written by Catalina Nadine Rey and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) is a procedure commonly used to decrease problem behavior. Although the decelerative effects of the DRO have been well researched, little is known about the processes that produce this behavior reduction. DRO schedules may decrease behavior through extinction, negative punishment, adventitious reinforcement, or some combination of these. Recent research has found some evidence to support the adventitious reinforcement hypothesis in a human operant arrangement (Jessel, Borrero, & Becraft; 2015). This three-part study replicated and extended previous research by evaluating the effects of DRO schedules on other behavior in a human operant arrangement. Participants played a computer game with two response options (target and other) and received points according to various schedules of reinforcement. We compared rate of responding across repeated exposures and varying durations of DRO, yoked variable time schedule (VT), and extinction (EXT) probes. Results across the three experiments showed that DRO schedules resulted in the lowest rate of the target response and the highest rate of the other response. Results from extended exposure to DRO probes showed that DRO schedules sometimes resulted in adventitious reinforcement of the other response, though often times, it was a fleeting effect and other response rates did not maintain. Results also showed that response reductions produced by DRO schedules could not be entirely explained by adventitious reinforcement of other behavior. The mechanisms responsible for response reductions during DRO schedules may largely depend on the discriminability of the DRO contingency.

Download or read book Learning and Behavior written by James E. Mazur and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews how people and animals learn and how their behaviors are later changed as a result of this learning. Nearly all of our behaviors are influenced by prior learning experiences in some way. This book describes some of the most important principles, theories, controversies, and experiments that pertain to learning and behavior that are applicable to many different species and many different learning situations. Many real-world examples and analogies make the concepts and theories more concrete and relevant to the students. In addition, most of the chapters include sections that describe how the theories and principles have been used in the applied field of behavior modification. Each chapter in the seventh edition was updated with new studies and new references that reflect recent developments in the field. The book includes a number of learning aids for students, including a list of learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, practices quizzes and review questions, and a glossary for all important terms. Learning & Behavior covers topics such as classical and operant conditioning, reinforcement schedules, avoidance and punishment, stimulus control, comparative cognition, observational learning, motor skill learning, and choice. Both the classic studies and the most recent developments and trends in the field are explored. Although the behavioral approach is emphasized, many cognitive theories are covered as well along with a chapter on comparative cognition. Upon completing this book readers will be able to:understand the field of learning and discuss real-world applications of learning principles.
