The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The study included 68 seventh grade Life Science students of average to above average achievement at a community based K-12 school in Florence, Montana. Treatment was implemented during a six week biome unit in which student achievement was assessed through the Evaluation Association Measured Academic Progress and summative assessments. Student attitude was evaluated through the Test of Science Related Attitudes and learning preference surveys, pre- and post-treatment. The effectiveness of constructivism approach to instruction on achievement via the BSCS 5E Instructional Model in the science classroom was not conclusively supported by data.

Book excerpt: This study examined if informal science learning had an effect on middle school students' science attitudes. This study also aimed to examine what effects informal science has on students' science attitudes.The study was conducted in four phases. Phase I, Project MISE, consisted of a year-long training program that educated teachers on informal science concepts. During Phase II the researcher administered the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA) part A and a questionnaire. Phase III, the observation phase, consisted of the gatekeeper observing and team teaching with the Project MISE teachers to insure that the concepts were being delivered correctly and effectively to the students. Finally, during Phase IV, the students were given TOSRA part B and an interview.Qualitative Data for this study were collected in the form of a questionnaire, a 35 question pretest, and a different 35 question post test and culminated with an interview. Thirteen Students were selected to participate in this study. The interview data were coded by identifying themes that were noticed while analyzing the interview and questionnaire data. Identified themes were (1) I love doing Experiments, (2) Science is my favorite Subject, (3) Hands on Stuff is fun, (4) Boys are More Smarter in Science than Girls, and (5) I liked This Science Class Better than Last Year. The TOSRA survey demonstrated an increase in social implications of science, normality of scientists, attitude to inquiry, adoption of science attitude, and leisure in science. There was a noticeable decrease in students' attitudes when it pertained to enjoyment of science lessons and careers in science. The decrease in the careers of science scale coincided with information obtained from the questionnaire that indicated many students were not interested in a science related career.

Book excerpt: This study was designed as a collaborative action research study and focused on the use of an inquiry-based unit in an eighth grade honors science class at a middle school with a diverse population in the southeastern portion of the United States in the Spring of 2005. The inquirybased unit was taught through the use of the electronics unit in Full Option Science System (FOSS). The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of an inquiry based curriculum on the level of participation in, attitudes of, and academic performance of students towards science. This collaborative action research study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative forms consisted of written notes taken by the classroom teacher and I that included observations of the whole class as well as observations of students in smaller inquiry groups and conversation and interview notations of student comments while they were doing inquiry work, both individual and group, as well as my notations of interviews and conversations with the classroom teacher. Although used to a lesser degree, quantitative data was collected from pre and post attitude surveys as well as from students' scores on inquiry-based investigations, paper activities and formal assessments. All data was triangulated across a variety of data sources so that any resulting patterns or themes would be supported. My access to this middle school was based on my role as the science coach assigned to the school. As the science coach, I worked with teachers and students to integrate the FOSS middle school curriculum unit into the school's science curriculum. The FOSS kits, workbooks and related reading books were designed to increase the use of inquiry and hands-on activities within middle and elementary school science classrooms.
