Book Trauma focused Equine assisted Psychotherapy Effects on Child and Adolescent Functioning Scale Scores Following Six Months of Treatment

Download or read book Trauma focused Equine assisted Psychotherapy Effects on Child and Adolescent Functioning Scale Scores Following Six Months of Treatment written by Amanda Katherine Kruger and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma, such as severe neglect or abuse, incurred during critical delopmental periods, such as childhood and adolescence, may create negative and pervasive effects in behavior and emotion. Previous scholarship has demonstrated that animals can provide therapeutic benefits for trauma victims, both as companions and in various psychotherapies. Recent research suggests that the addition of equines to the psychotherapy process may be beneficial for those who have experienced repeated traumatic stress. Trauma-focused Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP) focuses on using horses to help clients consistently regulate their own physiology and psychology. The current study examines the effects of six months of sessions of TF-EAP on children and adolescents that had experienced severe abuse of neglect. Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale scores were analyzed for 15 youths (mean age = 11.1 years) at the start of TF-Eap sessions and again after 6 months of treatment.

Book Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Download or read book Equine Assisted Psychotherapy written by Patricia E. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a specialized form of psychotherapy using the horse as a therapeutic tool to generate positive engagement with clients utilizing an experimental and animal-based treatment modality. Latino youth in the United States face unique challenges that place them at risk for developing mental health and behavioral symptoms. The aim of the current project was to analyze the effectiveness of EAP when treating at-risk youth, specifically Latino youth; to identify the specific challenges Latino youth face in the United States; and to determine whether EAP is an effective intervention for Latino youth in the United States. This literature review closely examined 22 articles that assessed the effectiveness of EAP with at-risk youth. Findings indicate that EAP can reduce internalizing, externalizing, and PTSD symptoms in at-risk youth, and re-engage previously disengaged youth into therapy. Given the overlap between the presenting problems experienced by at-risk Latino youth and the benefit of EAP, this appears to be an appropriate treatment modality for this population.

Book The Relationship Between Adolescent Girls and Horses

Download or read book The Relationship Between Adolescent Girls and Horses written by Margaret Cuffari Toukonen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most mental health disorders begin in adolescence. Because earlier interventions result in better outcomes, the search for effective therapies for at-risk adolescents has intensified. There is anecdotal evidence that equine-assisted mental health therapy programs improve coping and build skills in adolescent girls with mental health problems. The value of working with horses in a therapeutic modality is presumed to be based on the adolescent girl-horse relationship, yet the nature of this relationship has not been described or explained. The purpose of this research was to describe the essence of the relationship between adolescent girls and horses in order to obtain a greater understanding of the potential benefits of equine-assisted therapies for adolescent girls. An interpretive qualitative approach, based on Heideggerian philosophy, was used to examine the nature of the relationship from the perspective of the adolescent girls. To provide a broad understanding of the relationship, two groups of adolescent girls were purposefully sampled (N = 19). One group consisted of girls who had a variety of behavioral and emotional problems and were participating in an equine assisted therapy program (n = 9). The second group included girls from local riding stables who were naturally attracted to horses and rode for pleasure (n = 10). Using open-ended questions, the girls were asked to describe their relationships with horses. The interviews were audio taped and transcribed. The data were analyzed in a disciplined and systematic manner according to procedures outlined by Diekelmann and Allen (1989). The themes identified were sharing physical affection, being there for each other, being connected, dealing with stress, being good at something, and being a better person. The findings illustrate that adolescent girls derive important benefits from their relationships with horses. The experiences of girls with their horses during equine-assisted therapy can provide a context and focus for psychotherapy and counseling, suggesting that the two types of therapy should be integrated. This study offers promising information into understanding the relationship between adolescent girls and horses and a foundation for future research in this area.
