Book The Effects of Creative Movement Activities in the Preschool Classroom and Children s Ability to Move on Children s Social Competence

Download or read book The Effects of Creative Movement Activities in the Preschool Classroom and Children s Ability to Move on Children s Social Competence written by Elyse Marie Mclaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined the relationship between parent and teacher-reported social competence of preschool children and the children's observed involvement in creative movement activities in their classroom. A sample of 51 children, ages three to five-years-old (M = 53.32 SD = 7.19; months), from a university affiliated preschool were observed during regularly scheduled music and movement times with their lead teachers. Children and teachers were videotaped during these activities and coded for their behaviors. After controlling for child age, child gender, family income, and parent education, the strongest predictor of children's social competence was their physical ability to move. Children's observed creative movement was also a significant predictor of their social competence when reported by teachers. The current study also found that during music and movement activities, when teachers used instructional media, verbal instruction, and physical cues, children were more likely to participate in the activity, but not engage in creative movement. Significant differences in children's movement participation and teachers' behaviors were also found among the four classrooms that participated in the study.

Book Moving With Words Actions

Download or read book Moving With Words Actions written by Rhonda L. Clements and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earlier that children develop a love for physical activity, the better able they are to acquire the healthy habits that will serve them well throughout their lives. Moving With Words & Actions is designed to help them develop that critical physical literacy. Moving With Words & Actions offers early childhood and physical education teachers more than 70 lesson plans that can be used immediately or can be used as models for creating additional lessons. The plans reinforce both physical literacy and language literacy; they use words related to children’s academic learning and understanding of their immediate environment to entice them to move. The lesson plans • Use an interdisciplinary approach, integrating academic concepts from language arts, math, science, health and nutrition, community awareness, and environmental awareness • Are highly adaptable for various settings, including those working with individualized education programs and 504 accommodation plans as well as those teaching in limited spaces • Offer great noncompetitive activities that are perfect for use by recess, lunchtime, and before- and after-school specialists • Have been field tested according to best practices to ensure age appropriateness Each lesson plan includes three learning tasks that help children apply a variety of action words and movement concepts to the moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activities prescribed in the tasks. Most tasks are easy to implement, requiring no equipment or specialized setting. What’s more, all lesson plans address SHAPE America’s National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education, so preschool children will have a head start on their kindergarten learning. This SHAPE America book, based on the authors’ classic Movement-Based Learning, has been completely revamped with new lessons and new material to reflect current research, address the new standards and outcomes, and emphasize physical literacy. Part I offers expert guidance in selecting age-appropriate content, creating and implementing lesson plans, making the most of every lesson, and assessing your students’ learning and progress. In part I, you’ll explore the importance of words in young children’s lives and learn what constitutes an appropriate learning task and how that understanding should inform your teaching. These chapters also highlight two primary instructional strategies for this age group, identify five teaching practices to help student teachers create preservice lessons, and outline three assessment techniques for teachers in early-childhood settings. Part II supplies the lesson plans themselves, categorized by these units: • Healthy Bodies (examining body parts and the ways they move, and increasing awareness of healthy nutrition) • Our Community (enhancing children’s understanding of community helpers in familiar roles) • Living Creatures (helping children appreciate animals by imitating their movements, behaviors, and characteristics) • Science and Math (using action rhymes, riddles, and games to learn math and science concepts) • Language Arts (expanding on children’s language arts and movement vocabularies with alphabet challenges, action poems, movement riddles, and more) Moving With Words & Actions will help you plan lessons with confidence, use sound instructional strategies, and assess your students effectively as they learn how their bodies function, move, and grow in healthy ways. Children will enjoy the movement activities, which are fun in and of themselves; but, more importantly, they will be taking a solid first step toward becoming physically literate learners who will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to move with competence in multiple environments and lead active lives.

Book Movement based Learning

Download or read book Movement based Learning written by Rhonda L. Clements and published by Human Kinetics Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for everyone who wants to provide age-appropriate movement activities for preschool and early elementary age children. Physical education teachers, classroom teachers, daycare specialists, and before and after school activity directors now have a resource that can help them provide the nationally recommended 60 minutes per day of "structured" physical activity. Over 100 lesson plans, presented in an easy-to-use format, will expand children's movement knowledge and abilities while using basic academic concepts. Teachers will appreciate the new and innovative approaches to reinforce learning standards. The activities are non-competitive and most address the all-too-common problem of limited space and resources, because they do not require equipment or a special setting. Readers will develop an understanding of the basic foundation of movement-based learning and the key components of the imitative and movement exploration approaches to teaching basic movement skills and concepts. Readers will find it very easy to use these two approaches by following the practical examples and implementation strategies that are provided in the book. The lesson plans in each chapter focus on age-appropriate academic concepts that children are learning in the classroom and include activities that progress from simple to more complex physical challenges. Each simplified lesson plan identifies the national physical education standard(s) emphasized, primary learning objective, any materials needed, individual or partner activities, whole-group activities, and creative closure questions. - Chapter Two presents movement activities that focus on language arts skills the alphabet, rhyming, shapes, and expressing stories through movement. - Chapter Three focuses on increasing children's understanding of their body, the importance of eating healthy foods, and the need for daily physical activity. - Chapter Four focuses on community awareness. Activities explore community settings, the role of different people and workers in the community, as well as the celebration of major holidays. - The activities in Chapter Five will help children develop basic environmental awareness while acquiring an appreciation for living creatures. The authors devote an entire chapter to assessment, including sample rubrics and a teacher self-assessment form. They also present ideas to motivate children to assess their own involvement and enjoyment of the activity.
