Book The Effects of Practice and Working practice Homework on the Math Achievement of Elementary School Students Showing Varying Levels of Math Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Practice and Working practice Homework on the Math Achievement of Elementary School Students Showing Varying Levels of Math Performance written by Jill Roper and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While homework has been an active research area, clear documentation of the effects of homework on academic achievement using students showing varying levels of academic performance has not been explored. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of math calculation homework on the math performance of elementary school students demonstrating varying levels of achievement in math. The study also explored the effects of practice homework and a different type of homework, working-practice homework, which incorporated drill ratio procedures on math achievement. Ninety participants, who were all enrolled in the fifth grade at a Mid-Atlantic, suburban school district, completed the study. After completing a pretest, the participants were blocked into one of three achievement groups (top, middle, and lower) based on their pretest scores and randomly assigned either practice or working-practice homework for 6 weeks. The posttest results indicated no statistically significant differences between the two homework types overall or within each level of achievement group. Regardless of homework type assigned, participants on average demonstrated academic progress for the math calculation skills covered in the presence of instruction; however, between the level of achievement groups, the participants appeared to respond differently.

Book Teacher Mathematics Learning and Middle School Student Achievement

Download or read book Teacher Mathematics Learning and Middle School Student Achievement written by Sally Marie Mascia and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States policymakers have taken measures to improve learning for all students emphasizing the use of scientifically based research in choosing educational programs to promote school improvement and student learning. However, educators, researchers and policymakers debate about which factors are most important in affecting student achievement. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) places major emphasis upon teacher quality as a factor in improving achievement for all students. This emphasis grows out of research showing that teachers' mastery of the academic content they teach is critical to engaging students and is a significant factor in raising levels of student achievement. Middle or secondary school teachers must possess the equivalent of an academic major in the core academic area (107th U.S. Congress, 2002). To meet this need, a key goal of the Cleveland MSP was to increase middle school teacher content knowledge in mathematics through teacher participation in graduate coursework. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of impact that this program had on middle grades student mathematics achievement. In addition, the stability of teaching assignment was investigated. A two- level hierarchical linear model was used to explore the relationship between the teacher and student variables. Over 2500 student cases and over 90 teacher cases per grade level were used for analysis. Results indicated that teacher MSP participation, as a main effect, was significantly and negatively associated with student achievement on the sixth grade OAT-M. In addition, there was a significant positive relationship between teacher MSP participation and student achievement on the OAT-M when students had additional instructional time for sixth and eighth grades. Teacher assignment stability, as a main effect, was significantly and positively associated with sixth grade student achievement on the OAT-M and was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grades student achievement in mathematics when students had additional instructional time. Finally, the main effect of classroom mean prior achievement was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grade mathematics achievement, and classroom mean prior achievement was positively associated with student prior achievement for seventh grade students. As shown in this study, teacher participation in graduate level content coursework can enhance other teacher and student characteristics and thereby contribute to middle grades student achievement in mathematics.

Book Effect Of Interactive Digital Homework With An Ibook On Sixth Grade Students Mathematics Achievement And Attitudes When Learning Fractions Decimals And Percents

Download or read book Effect Of Interactive Digital Homework With An Ibook On Sixth Grade Students Mathematics Achievement And Attitudes When Learning Fractions Decimals And Percents written by Jennifer Zakrzewski and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, technology has become a prominent feature in our lives. Technology has not only been integrated into our lives, but into the classroom as well. Teachers have been provided with a tremendous amount of technology related tools to educate their students. However, many of these technologically enhanced tools have little to no research supporting their claims to enhance learning. This study focuses on one aspect of technology, the iBook, to complete homework relating to fractions, decimals, and percents in a sixth grade classroom. An iBook is a digital textbook that allows the user to interact with the book through various features. Some of these features include galleries, videos, review quizzes, and links to websites. These interactive features have the potential to enhance comprehension through interactivity and increased motivation. Prior to this study, two pilot iterations were conducted. During each pilot study, students in two sixth grade classrooms used the iBook to supplement learning of fractions, decimals, and percents. A comparison group was not included during either iteration, as the goal was to fine-tune the study prior to implementation. The current study was the third iteration, which included a comparison and treatment group.
