Book excerpt: Psychotherapy has been rapidly developing and is still a relatively new profession in Mainland China. The public has little knowledge of counseling and there is very little research that has examined the help-seeking process in the Chinese population. This study aims to examine the effects of a multimedia intervention on barriers, attitudes, and intentions to seek counseling with Chinese people. The multimedia is developed based on prior empirical research on help-seeking behaviors organized according to a cross-cultural help-seeking model.

Download or read book I Observe Media I Learn a Mediated Culture written by Xun Yu and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is to examine the influence of media reports and attitudes on American and Chinese college students' perception of each other. Positive relationships were found both between media frames and Chinese participants and between media frames and American participants. This indicated that the longer time students use media, the more likely they agree with media frames. The frequency results showed that more Chinese students agreed with media frames than Americans, which indicated that Americans' perceptions of China are less likely to be influenced by media than Chinese' perceptions of America. More studies need to be done in the future research.

Book Understanding Utilization of Mental Health Services Among Chinese International Students

Download or read book Understanding Utilization of Mental Health Services Among Chinese International Students written by Ge Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Depressive and anxiety disorders are common mental health disorders that threaten the well-being of ethnic minorities. Asian international students are suggested experience higher level of depression and anxiety, but less likely to use mental health services than students in general. This study examines factors that motivate and impede Chinese international students from seeking college counseling services from the perspective of health communication. Method: An online, self-administered questionnaire was conducted among a randomized sample of 150 Chinese international students from a Mid-Western university. The questionnaire was structured with key variables derived from the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), such as perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and self-efficacy of using counseling services. Key variables are measured by 5-point Likert scale. Data analysis was conducted with Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression. Results: Chinese international students' counseling seeking behavior is influenced by their perceived self-efficacy and external impediments of using counseling services. Perceived knowledge of mental health disorders and counseling contribute significantly to Chinese international perceived self-efficacy of using counseling services; however, perceived knowledge of the two items are generally low. The adherence of Asian cultural values, especially to collectivism and emotional self-control, contribute significantly to Chinese international students' negative perceptions of counseling. Conclusion: College counseling services should conduct health communication campaigns that aim at improving Asian international students' knowledge of depression/anxiety and psychological counseling, in order to encourage them to engage in college counseling system. College counseling services should also enhance the cultural sensitivity of counselors, and provide culture-matched counseling services to Asian international students.

Book The Relationship Between Terminal Values and Health Care Preferences Among Chinese Students from the People s Republic of China and Taiwan Attending Oregon State University

Download or read book The Relationship Between Terminal Values and Health Care Preferences Among Chinese Students from the People s Republic of China and Taiwan Attending Oregon State University written by Bernadette P. Wright and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if significant relationships exist among terminal values, demographic variables and health care preferences for information and behavioral involvement for graduate students from the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. The Rokeach Value Survey and the Krantz Health Opinion Survey were used to collect data from graduate students at Oregon State University. The data derived from 161 returned questionnaires (91 from the People's Republic of China and 70 from Taiwan) were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, multiple regression, and the t-test. Results showed subjects from the People's Republic of China and Taiwan differed significantly on two terminal values. Students from the People's Republic of China valued more a comfortable life and a world of beauty than the students from Taiwan. The terminal value of health was ranked in the lower half of the 18 terminal values by both groups of students which contradicts the literature. Respondents from the People's Republic of China had a significantly higher preference for information than Taiwan students who had a significantly higher health care preference for active participation and behavioral involvement. Preferences may be related to the political community and institutional differences in the health care delivery in the two countries. The value for an exciting life and use of a community physician or hospital were significant predictors of a health care preference for information. The values a world of beauty and social recognition were significantly related to a health care preference for behavioral involvement.

Book Exploring the Cross cultural Experiences of Chinese International Students in the United States and Their Perceptions of Professional Counseling Services in the Context of Acculturation

Download or read book Exploring the Cross cultural Experiences of Chinese International Students in the United States and Their Perceptions of Professional Counseling Services in the Context of Acculturation written by Fengkan Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic institutions in the United States (U.S.) have witnessed a rapid growth of the population of international students from China in the past decade (Institute of International Education, 2017). As sojourners, Chinese international students can experience numerous acculturative stress in the U.S., which may cause psychological distress (Han, Han, Luo, Jacobs, & Jean-Baptiste, 2013; Mori, 2000; Pedersen, 1997). However, there is a significant disparity in mental health care for this population at American universities (N. Zhang & Dixon, 2003; Robertson, Holleran, & Samuels, 2015). Most existing studies in this field were quantitative studies. However, quantitative method has its own limitations in investigating the essence and meanings of subjective experiences of individuals. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate Chinese international students' acculturative experiences in the U.S. and to present their coping strategies of acculturative stress. This study also investigated co-researchers' perceptions of counseling services on campus and their experiences with the services if they had used them. Specifically, this study used two rounds in-depth semi-structured individual interviews to collect data and applied the transcendental phenomenology (Moustakas, 1994) in data analysis. Textual descriptions were developed to describe what co-researchers experienced in acculturation in the U.S. as well as their perceptions of counseling and experiences in counseling. In addition, structural descriptions were developed to explain how these experiences and perceptions were formed. Finally, a synthesis description was created, representing the group as a whole, to describe the meanings and essence of these co-researchers' acculturation experience in the U.S., their perceptions of counseling services, and their experiences in counseling. The findings of this study are congruent with previous research and have implications for clinical practice and further research with Chinese international students in the U.S.
