There have been many studies done that have shown that caffeine has the ability to improve both muscular strength and endurance due to many different effects that it has in the central nervous system. However, there is still a very intriguing question: when is the optimal time to take caffeine in order to maximize performance? It is known that caffeine has its peak effects occur about 45 minutes after ingestion. By taking caffeine 45 minutes before exercise, the peak effects would occur at the beginning of the workout, and by taking it 15 minutes before the exercise, the peak effects would occur in the middle of the workout, when the body is becoming fatigue. This study is aimed to figure out which of these scenarios is the most effective.

Book excerpt: Research indicates that a moderate dose of caffeine may enhance muscular strength and power, particularly in males. Less is known on caffeine’s impact on muscular performance in females. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 200 mg dose caffeine gum on muscular strength and muscular power in recreationally active females. Nineteen women participated in 3 laboratory sessions, the first being the familiarization trial. During the next two visits, the participants were given either 200 mg of caffeine gum or a placebo gum, rested for 15 minutes, completed a 10 minute warm-up, then performed performance testing consisting of maximal jump height testing on a force plate, followed by one repetition maximum testing for the bench press and leg press. While the caffeine resulted in higher mean differences for all tests, there were no significant differences between caffeine or placebo trials (p > 0.05) for any performance measures except the maximal squat jump (p = 0.04). In conclusion, a 200 mg dose of caffeine is not sufficient to improve muscular strength and some instances of muscular power. This is a novel finding, and future studies should look at altering time to absorption or higher dosing of caffeine gum.

Book excerpt: Caffeine is a well-established ergogenic aid believed to increase strength and muscular endurance. An increase in strength suggests a centralized impact, or an “outflow” effect, on the central nervous system (CNS). An increase in muscular endurance suggests an impact of caffeine on peripheral factors such as the myoneural junction or others that locally impact muscular contractions. The present study was conducted to determine the predominant impact of caffeine, either on central or peripheral factors that govern muscular contraction, or both. Data concluded that (1.) muscular strength increased from control in both the caffeine and placebo trials, and (2.) there was no improvement in muscular endurance in the caffeine and placebo trial when compared to control; however, during the isokinetic endurance test, there was a modest increase in peak torque in the caffeine trial when compared to control. This study was conducted with approval from the Hanover College Human Subjects Institutional Review Board.

Book excerpt: The popularization of energy drink use as a supplement to exercise is steadily increasing, especially among young adult males. However, the effects of energy drinks on muscular performance in young adults have yet to be clearly elucidated. Eight male subjects (mean age: 23.3 ± 4.3 yrs, height: 181.0 ± 5.3 cm, fat percent 17.8 ± 5.2%, and weight 85.3 ± 12.6 kg) completed this randomized double-blinded cross over study. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in acute muscular strength and endurance and Profile of Mood States (POMS) scores between three treatments (RockStar, sugar-free RockStar, and sugar-free caffeine-free Placebo). It was hypothesized that there would be no significant differences in acute peak torque and endurance of the knee extensors and flexors or on fatigue and vigor subscores from the POMS questionnaire. Each man was tested randomly at least 1 week apart. Diet and time of day were held constant across trials. Peak torque of knee extensors and flexors at 60, 180, 240 degress/second and fatigue index and total work were calculated by performing 50 repetitions at 240 degrees/second. There were no significant differences in peak torque, fatigue index, or total work measures or in subjective measures of fatigue or vigor from the POMS between the treatments. This study indicates that RockStar energy drinks have no acute ergogenic effects in young men performing isokinetic strength or endurance testing.
