Book The Effects of Business and Philosophy Instruction on the Moral Development of College Students

Download or read book The Effects of Business and Philosophy Instruction on the Moral Development of College Students written by Bruce Stiller and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based upon Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development, this study compared the relative effectiveness of two college programs -- Business and Philosophy -- in facilitating development through the stages of moral development defined by Kohlberg. A cross-sectional approach was selected owing to the practical impossibilities of proceeding with longitudinal investigation. This led to the formation of four groups, which received the appelations of Beginning Philosophy Majors, Advanced Philosophy Majors, Beginning Business Majors, and Advanced Business Majors, respectively. Kohlberg's Horal Judgment Interview was selected as the means of measuring moral maturity. Three null hypotheses were formed. The first predicted that ''Beginning Philosophy Majors will not score significantly higher in moral maturity as measured by the Kohlberg Moral Judgment Interview than Advanced Business Majors". The second null hypothesis predicted that "Advanced Philosophy Majors will not score significantly higher on the Kohlberg Moral Judgment Interview than Advanced Business Majors", and the third predicted that "The mean difference in moral maturity as measured by the Kohlberg Moral Judgment Interview between Beginning and Advanced Philosophy Majors will not be significantly greater than the mean difference between Beginning and Advanced Business Majors". Each group consisted of eight volunteers. The experimental procedure required each participant to: 1. Complete a Biographical Information Sheet. 2. Respond orally to a set of questions and probes relating to the moral dilemmas of the Moral Judgment Interview. 3. Take the Slosson IQ test. As the above would imply, certain controls were built into the design. Since the variables age, IQ, and G.P.A all relate highly to stage of moral reasoning, the four groups were roughly equated with respect to these variables. Since a two factor [analysis] of variance revealed the presence of two main and one interaction effects, individual t tests were performed to test each of the three null hypotheses. The .05 level of significance was adopted for each of the three one-tailed tests (each of the three predictions had been directional). The results of the statistical analysis led to the rejection of null hypothesis #2 and null hypothesis #3, but failed to allow a rejection of null hypothesis #1. This led to the conclusion that the difference in moral maturity between Beginning and Advanced Philosophy Majors is greater than that between Beginning and Advanced Business Majors. Consequently, it was inferred from these results that philosophy majors pass through Kohlberg's stages of moral reasoning at a more rapid pace than do business majors. In the final chapter, the question of "Why should the moral maturity of philosophy majors proceed more rapidly than that of business majors?", was explored. A cognitive-developmental interpretation of this finding was advanced, followed by a listing of the study's weaknesses, and in particular those weaknesses which might cast doubt upon the plausibility of the interpretation advanced. And finally, some suggestions for further study which might help answer some of the questions which had surfaced during the course of the present study were included"--Document.

Book Moral Development in the Professions

Download or read book Moral Development in the Professions written by James R. Rest and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year in this country, some 10,000 college and university courses are taught in applied ethics. And many professional organizations now have their own codes of ethics. Yet social science has had little impact upon applied ethics. This book promises to change that trend by illustrating how social science can make a contribution to applied ethics. The text reports psychological studies relevant to applied ethics for many professionals, including accountants, college students and teachers, counselors, dentists, doctors, journalists, nurses, school teachers, athletes, and veterinarians. Each chapter begins with the research base of the cognitive-developmental approach--especially linked to Kohlberg and Rest's Defining Issues Test. Finally, the book summarizes recent research on the following issues: * moral judgment scores within and between professions, * pre- and post-test evaluations of ethics education programs, * moral judgment and moral behavior, * models of professional ethics education, and * models for developing new assessment tools. Researchers in different professional fields investigate different questions, develop different research strategies, and report different findings. Typically researchers of one professional field are not aware of research in other fields. An important aim of the present book is to bring this diverse research together so that cross-fertilization can occur and ideas from one field can transfer to another.

Book Teaching Business Ethics for Effective Learning

Download or read book Teaching Business Ethics for Effective Learning written by Ronald R. Sims and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to teaching business ethics successfully, says Sims, is to start with clear goals and a sensible expectation of outcomes, and with a true knowledge and appreciation of how people actually learn. Seems obvious enough, he says, but the surprise is that so few understand this. Thus, the teaching of business ethics is often an unproductive, frustrating exercise in futility. Sims hopes to change that. Proceeding with the conviction that open communications between teacher and student before, during, and after the teaching experience is vital, Sims identifies key teaching processes, gives practical advice on designing and planning the curriculum, and offers guidance on how to develop a climate conducive to effective learning. He highlights the importance of creating a classroom climate that encourages open dialogue, good moral conversation, and conversational learning. And throughout he emphasizes that learning styles and experiential learning theory are cornerstones of teaching business ethics, thus taking an approach unlike any in the literature. An important guide for those who are new to teaching this essential subject, Sims' book will also be helpful for more experienced teachers who are wondering why their own methods do not always work, or do not work as well as they believe they should. Sims identifies important processes that must be managed if business ethics is to be taught and learned successfully—processes such as creating stakeholder commitment to the goals, purposes, and outcomes of the teaching effort, and curriculum design and planning that are attuned to individual differences in learning styles, motivation, and values. Also included in Sims' processes are the development of individual school outcomes, and expectations, and the assessment procedures that can measure them. He discusses the importance of incorporating debriefing into an experiential learning exercise or discussion, and goes on to give an in-depth discussion of the pedagogical approaches that allow teachers to teach the practical and theoretical components of the subject simultaneously. Well illustrated with examples, such as an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and a way to institutionalize outcomes assessment by means of total quality management, Sims' book returns constantly to his major theme: that to teach business ethics effectively the teacher must first create a climate of trust and sharing within and between students, and between students and teacher, and that the teacher must have a concrete way to measure the impact of the teaching effort's results.

Book Ethics in the First Person

Download or read book Ethics in the First Person written by Deni Elliott and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in the First Person is the first comprehensive guide to teaching and learning practical ethics to be published in more than 25 years. This book provides the historical context for the study of practical ethics in the Twenty-First Century, but focuses on the teaching and learning of practical ethics as a first-person, present-tense activity. Practical ethics instruction can be expected to bring about more sophisticated decision-making only if students and teachers keep cognizant of their own values, beliefs, and processes for thinking through ethical issues. Institutions of higher education and the ethics class itself provide often-ignored opportunities for ethical analysis. The book closes with an analysis of how ethics serves as a bridge across cultures. A resource for teachers of ethics across the curriculum, this book may also be used as a supplemental text for upper level undergraduate and graduate students, or as a guide for self-study.

Book Ethical Decision Making in Management

Download or read book Ethical Decision Making in Management written by Matej Drašček and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral pragmatism has been largely ignored in Business Ethics, despite its natural attraction and the fact that it is prominent in philosophy and socio-economic theories. The main premise of the book is that the complexity of today’s business world does not permit a grand ethical theory, notwithstanding the different attempts made by scientists. Moral pragmatism is the ‘go-to’ approach where the ethical decision-making of managers varies dependent on different circumstances but it always integrates moral considerations. Ethical decision-making is no longer based simply on known rules, but entails the constant dynamic interaction of circumstances, the development of new rules, managers’ past experiences, their knowledge concerning ethics, and skills of moral reasoning. This book interweaves the postmodern approach to management studies and, based on its innovative research, reintroduces moral pragmatism in Business Ethics. The combination of decision-making theories, philosophy and postmodernism paves the way for future novel research in Business Ethics, making it an excellent resource for researchers, academics, and advanced students in the field of Business Ethics. Practitioners, on the other hand, will benefit by improving their skills in ethical decision-making and leadership.

Book New Visions of Graduate Management Education

Download or read book New Visions of Graduate Management Education written by Charles Wankel and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume in our book series on Research in Management Education and Development (Information Age Publishing) is devoted toward an empirical and conceptual examination of some long-standing criticisms of graduate management education. This volume also showcases a wide variety of innovative experiments in new visions of Master’s level graduate management education. We draw upon a rich array of USA and non-USA scholars and empirical sources in this volume and we are most grateful to our volume’s distinguished academic contributors for sustaining our book series aspiration to both reflect upon and shape innovative thinking and practice on important issues of management education and development. The over-arching theme in each chapter is the need for each innovation to be integrated within the larger body of curriculum, program structures and pedagogic practices of the innovative Business School and its overall management education curriculum. Piecemeal and stand-alone versions of each innovation are seen more as pilots for early stage demonstration of the value of the innovation. Each chapter argues for a more holistic approach to embedding each innovation within the fabric of the entire business school and graduate management education enterprise. This call for holistic, integrative approaches to graduate management education is amply demonstrated in many chapters of this volume and we sincerely hope that you will find some inspiration in the forthcoming pages for furthering your own educational vision.

Book Ethics in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Ethics in Science and Engineering written by James G. Speight and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only treatment of ethics from a scientific and engineering perspective The pursuit of science and engineering requires freedom of thought and, in the academic sense, unrestricted communication. It is through the professionalism of the members of these disciplines that world knowledge and technology advances. Yet there are continuous reports of unethical behavior in the forms of data manipulation, cheating, and plagiarism at the highest levels. The motivations for this behavior are varied, such as the need to advance one's career or to obtain research funding. This book gives an account of scientific and engineering disciplines and examines the potential for unethical behavior by professionals. Documented examples are presented to show where the matter could have been halted before it became an unethical issue. The authors also look to the future to see what is in store for professionals in science and engineering and how the potential for unethical behavior can be negated.

Book Moral Leadership in Action

Download or read book Moral Leadership in Action written by Heidi von Weltzien Hoivik and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume . . . is particularly suited to teachers and students within the higher education sector having an interest in business and management ethics. Economic Outlook and Business Review The theme of this book is moral leadership in action as it manifests itself implicitly and explicitly in European business organizations. We understand leadership as interplay among people at all levels within organizations and also within the economic system by which people are bound together through particular forms of interaction. The contributions collected in this volume mirror the plurality of approaches we find in the theoretical writings of academics in different European countries. The additional business cases from six different nations show how leaders actually have adopted and integrated working with values in their own organizations, i.e. how they put moral leadership into action. While the selected papers are not meant to be representative of each country, particular economic and cultural traditions are apparent in both thinking and managing moral leadership. The contributors, by presenting this emerging multicultural pattern of Europe, contribute to a better and more knowledgeable understanding of how European business leaders pursue their goals. Managers, students and teachers in business, ethics and leadership studies will find this volume an indispensable guide to the unique contributions of European leadership scholars.
