This book was released on 2012 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial beach nourishment, the most common method to mitigate coastal erosion in the United States, is also considered the most ecologically friendly alternative for shoreline stabilization. However, this habitat alteration has the potential to impact nesting marine turtles and developing hatchlings. The first objective of this study was to determine how nourishing beaches with two different design templates affects loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting success, the ratio of nests to the total number of nests and non-nesting emergences, and reproductive success, the ratio of hatched and emerged hatchlings to the total number of eggs deposited. Two types of restoration designs exist along the southern Brevard County, FL coastline, which supports some of the highest density loggerhead and green turtle nesting worldwide. Since 2005, approximately 35 kilometers of beach have undergone 1) full-scale restoration (typically called nourishment), where sand was added above and below the mean high tide line (2005, 2010) or 2) dune restoration, where sand was placed on the dune (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009). To quantify the effects of these restoration types, we used a Before-After-Control-Impact-Paired Series (BACIPS) model, which tests for significance between the difference in nesting success rates at the impact (engineered) and control sites (natural beach) before and after restoration ([delta]). For loggerheads, there was a significant difference in [delta] after dune restoration during the years of construction (2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009; p[less than]0.001) and one year post-construction (2007; p[less than]0.05 and 2010; p[less than]0.001). After full-scale restoration, there was a significant difference in [delta] during the years of construction (2005 and 2010; p [less than]0.001) and one year post-construction (2006; p[less than]0.001). For green turtles, there was a significant difference in[delta] after dune restoration during two of the four years of construction (2006; p[less than]0.05 and 2008; p[less than]0.01) and one of the two one-year post-construction years (2010; p[less than]0.05). After full-scale restoration, the significant difference in [delta] lasted every season (2005-2010; p[less than]0.001). There were no significant differences in [delta] for loggerhead or green turtle reproductive success rates after either type of restoration. The second objective was to use the different restoration designs to study what beach characteristics function as loggerhead nesting cues to explain why altering the beach decreases nesting success rates. We examined beach elevation and slope, sand moisture content, sand grain size, beach width, and distance traveled. Logistic regression model selection found all variables were important (R2=0.75). Further examination of trends, with each crawl divided into quarters, found beach slope served as a nesting cue. In all study sites except one, when turtles false crawled, the beach flattened out in the final quarter of the crawl. Conversely, in nesting emergences, the final quarter rose at a steeper slope than the previous quarter. Additionally, model selection found variables important in nest site selection were also important in hatching (R2=0.44) and emergence (R2=0.45) success. These results offer new insight into how and why marine turtle nesting patterns change after artificial nourishment, providing information necessary to nourish beaches in a more "turtle-friendly" manner.

Book Beach Restoration in Florida

Book excerpt: High sand compaction restricts gas diffusion between clutch and atmosphere. This accumulates carbon dioxide in the clutch and prevents oxygen from reaching the eggs. This combination of gases is detrimental to sea turtle development and leads to lower hatching and emerging successes. In the second experiment I found that high concentrations of unbound sand calcium carbonate reduced clutch carbon dioxide concentrations during the second half of incubation. This buffering effect maintained incubation gases within safe physiological levels and reduced clutch mortality. However, hatchlings emerging from these nests had significantly smaller body depths, higher packed cell volumes, higher total protein levels, and higher triglycerides. This physiological data indicate these hatchlings were more dehydrated and metabolized more yolk than controls. Their physiological condition worsened after crawling 10 meters, intended to replicate traversing the beach to ocean. Data show that although clutch carbon dioxide levels can be reduced by unbound sand calcium carbonate, high sand compaction has a consistently negative impact on diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules. Differences in atmospheric concentrations, diffusion rates, and solubility of oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules, intensify this effect for the latter. Regulation of specific sand characteristics is paramount for beach nourishment projects. Engineers and regulators should incorporate the information emanating from this dissertation into future beach restoration projects because it relates human needs to the consequences beach sand can have on the incubation of loggerhead sea turtles.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine turtle reproductive success is strongly correlated with the stability and quality of the nesting environment. Because females show fidelity to key nesting beaches, the management and physical characteristics of these beaches directly affect future generations of marine turtles and may be essential for the recovery of these threatened and endangered species.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However, when the rates were analyzed by nesting season, the average hatching and emergence success rates were always lower on nourished beaches than on natural beaches. A hotspot analysis on nests and false crawls revealed that turtles preferred natural beaches that border nourished areas for nesting while false crawls were more evenly distributed through the study area. Although this study documents the negative effects of beach nourishment on loggerhead sea turtle nesting, nourishment projects are likely to continue because of their benefits to human populations. Further examining of the impacts that humans have on nesting and developing loggerheads will ultimately aid policy formation as we continue to manage and protect the future of the species.

Book The Effects of Beach Nourishment on Sea Turtle Nesting Densities in Florida

Download or read book The Effects of Beach Nourishment on Sea Turtle Nesting Densities in Florida written by Aubree A. Gallaher and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of the nesting data showed that approximately six of the nourishment events experienced declines in the first year or two post-nourishment, supporting the hypothesis. The remaining seven beaches did not support the hypothesis. Five of the nourishment events that did not support the hypothesis showed no difference in nesting densities compared to the control beaches, and the remaining two nourishment events experienced increases in nesting when compared to the control beach. The analysis of these 13 nourishment events indicates that the nesting sea turtles' responses to nourishment vary based on site-specific conditions. When data are available, nourishment projects should evaluate nesting trends following past nourishments at their particular beach to assist in developing an appropriate strategy for preventing declines in nesting. Due to the potential declines in sea turtle densities that may occur following nourishment, coastal managers should consider methods such as retreat to avoid the need for shoreline stabilization projects.

Book The Biology of Sea Turtles Volume I

Download or read book The Biology of Sea Turtles Volume I written by Peter L. Lutz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea turtles have existed for millions of years, making them fascinating subjects of study. In the last 20 years, the science of sea turtle biology has expanded at an exponential rate, leading to major advances in many areas. This book synthesizes the results of these advances and focuses on how these endangered marine reptiles operate in, adapt to, and are dependent upon particular features of their marine environment. New technology in data gathering, such as DNA analyses, remote sensing, and physiological monitoring techniques, has led to a much greater understanding of the biology of the sea turtle at all stages of their life history.
