Book Effects of Safety Behavior Fading on Social Anxiety and Emotional Disclosure

Download or read book Effects of Safety Behavior Fading on Social Anxiety and Emotional Disclosure written by Lauren A. Stentz and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 12% of adults in the United States will experience social anxiety disorder (SAD) at some point in their lifetime. Individuals with SAD commonly engage in safety behaviors (SBs), which are behavioral and cognitive strategies used in an effort to avoid or decrease the likelihood of the feared threat outcome and decrease their anxiety in social situations. These behaviors are thought to be dysfunctional and play a key role in contemporary models of the disorder. The current study sought to expand upon existing research by experimentally examining the role of SBs in social anxiety and social performance deficits, specifically self-disclosure. Participants with social anxiety (N = 132) were randomized to two weeks of SB fading or a no-instructions control. Both conditions completed measures of interest (e.g. social anxiety symptoms, emotional disclosure symptoms) at baseline and post-manipulation, and they also completed a speech task at post. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that the safety behavior fading condition reported lower safety behaviors, social anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and trait anxiety relative to the control condition. Additionally, the SB fading condition reported greater questionnaire-assessed disclosure of thoughts, habits and emotions compared to the no-instructions control. Contrary to predictions, no effects of condition were found on fear reactivity or emotional disclosure in the context of the in vivo speech task. The present study provides further evidence for the importance of SBs in social anxiety and suggests SB fading may lead to greater comfort with self-disclosure. More direct intervention (e.g., social skills training) may be required to influence actual self-disclosure in this population. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social anxiety disorder is persistent fear of (or anxiety about) one or more social situations that is out of proportion to the actual threat posed by the situation and can be severely detrimental to quality of life. Only a minority of people with social anxiety disorder receive help. Effective treatments do exist and this book aims to increase identification and assessment to encourage more people to access interventions. Covers adults, children and young people and compares the effects of pharmacological and psychological interventions. Commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The CD-ROM contains all of the evidence on which the recommendations are based, presented as profile tables (that analyse quality of data) and forest plots (plus, info on using/interpreting forest plots). This material is not available in print anywhere else.

Book Blending in at the Cost of Losing Oneself

Download or read book Blending in at the Cost of Losing Oneself written by Elizabeth Mary June Orr and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has demonstrated that high social anxiety is associated with uncertainty about one's self views and self-concept (Moscovitch et al., 2009; Stopa et al., 2010; Wilson & Rapee, 2006). However, no research has addressed potential mechanisms underlying the link between high social anxiety and low self-certainty nor has research examined whether this relationship is bi-directional. In the current research, I propose a cyclical model in which high social anxiety leads to low self-certainty, which in turn, feeds back into higher levels of social anxiety. I also propose that the relationship between high social anxiety and low self-certainty is mediated by the self-protective self-disclosure patterns employed by socially anxious individuals. In three interconnected studies, I examine the hypothesis that social anxiety, self-disclosure and self-certainty operate in a cyclical model. Study 1 provided a correlational test of the hypothesized feedback model in its entirety and demonstrated that honesty of self-disclosure was the most important and influential mechanism underlying the link between high social anxiety and low self-certainty. Experimentally manipulating the honesty of participants' self-disclosures in Study 2 demonstrated that dishonest self-disclosures during a social task led to low self-certainty, but only amongst individuals high in trait performance anxiety. Finally, experimentally manipulating self-certainty in Study 3 demonstrated that low self-certainty led to high anticipatory anxiety about an upcoming self-disclosure task. Together, these results elucidate a cyclical maladaptive pattern in which low self-certainty as a result of self-protective self-disclosure leads to high social anxiety and a greater reluctance to self-disclose. Results from the three studies are discussed with respect to their theoretical implications and in relation to clinical applications for individuals with social anxiety disorder.

Book The Association of High Social Anxiety and Perceived Responsiveness with Self disclosure

Download or read book The Association of High Social Anxiety and Perceived Responsiveness with Self disclosure written by Sarah Petty and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friendships of individuals high in social anxiety are characterized by low intimacy and closeness (Weisman et al., 2011). Past research suggests that these impairments may be due to the low levels of self-disclosure associated with high social anxiety, however the mechanism behind this behavior has not been studied (e.g. Cuming & Rapee, 2010). Cognitive models of social anxiety posit that social anxiety is developed and maintained through cognitive distortions (Clark, 2001). Low perceived responsiveness during social interactions might be a cognitive distortion leading to reduced levels of self-disclosure for individuals high in social anxiety. The present study's objective was to test the role of perceived responsiveness in the relationship between social anxiety and self-disclosure. Two hundred and twenty-two undergraduate students were recruited to fill out an on-line survey. Participants completed a measure of social anxiety. Following this, participants identified a close friend and answered questions about this close friend including perceived responsiveness and self-disclosure in this relationship. Participants completed the same procedure for an identified acquaintance. Reduced perceived responsiveness was found to mediate the relationship between high social anxiety and low self-disclosure for close friendships, but not for relationships with acquaintances. As self-disclosure contributes to intimacy in friendships, it was important to identify and test this pathway. Findings suggest the importance of perceived responsiveness in the close friendships of individuals with high social anxiety, and have implications for the treatment of social anxiety.
