Book The Effects of a Middle School Dropout Prevention Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Students

Download or read book The Effects of a Middle School Dropout Prevention Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Students written by Melissa Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 27% of students drop out of school each year in the United States (Dianda, 2008). Many of these students complete graduation requirements later giving the United States a 93% high school completion rate (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). While there are many factors that may cause a student to not complete high school, retention can play a significant role. While there are positive effects to retaining a student, grade retention increases the risk of dropping out by 30 - 50 percent (Shane R. Jimerson, Anderson, & Whipple, 2002). Students that are retained in two grades are 90 percent more likely to drop out (Mann, 1987). Across the United States, there are interventions and programs designed to reduce the dropout rate by providing previously retained students the opportunity to complete two years of course material in one year in an effort to catch students up to their original graduating class. The purpose of this study was to examine the academic success of one of these grade recovery programs over time. Archival data on students who participated in Course Acceleration Remediation and Enrichment (C.A.R.E.) Academy were collected from Gizmo Independent School District (GISD) (pseudonym). Math and reading state assessment scores and end of the year math and language arts course grades for seventh and ninth grade were examined along with graduation completion rates of students who were successful in the program (n = 579). High school completion data were analyzed for the two cohorts who have matriculated past grade twelve. The study revealed C.A.R.E. Academy students had a lower passing percentage on seventh and ninth grade math state assessment exams and the ninth grade reading state assessment exam; however, had a higher passing percentage on the seventh grade reading state assessment exam and all examined courses (seventh grade math and language arts and ninth grade Algebra I and English I) when compared to the district at-risk population. Overall, C.A.R.E. Academy students that continued their education in GISD completed high school with a 97% graduation rate. The results of this study should encourage school leaders to not only understand the impact retention can have on the dropout rate and student progress but also what interventions are successful in supporting retained students.

Book Metacognitive Intervention Effects on Attendance Achievement and Prosocial Behavior Among Ninth and Tenth Grade Students At risk for School Dropout

Download or read book Metacognitive Intervention Effects on Attendance Achievement and Prosocial Behavior Among Ninth and Tenth Grade Students At risk for School Dropout written by Arthera Marra Shell and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study used a behavioral consultation model to implement an eight-week metacognitive problem-solving instruction (MPSI) intervention in response to the public's demand for more innovative approaches to the escalating school dropout problem facing public schools in general, and urban high schools in particular. It had sought to determine through empirical research the effects of MPSI on positive behavioral outcomes: improvements on school attendance, academic achievement, and prosocial behavior among a sample of 64 ninth and tenth grade high school students from both special education and general education who were placed at-risk for school failure and school dropout, in a large urban high school within the District of Columbia Public Schools from 9/96-1/97. It further sought to examine the effects of MPSI intervention and the Traditional (TRAD/C) dropout prevention approach used by the participating high school in reducing the three targeted risk factors associated with school dropout. Subject volunteers were randomly assigned to either the MPSI intervention group or one of two control groups, TRAD/C or C-II, an untested control group. Pre-post and 4-week follow-up measures assessed subject- groups' performance on tests of academic achievement, on the number of unexcused school absences and grade point average measured over three time intervals, and on scores obtained from adaptive behavior scales. The findings had indicated that: (1) 9th and 10th grade subjects under the MPSI treatment across program classifications had demonstrated greater improvements on school attendance from posttest to 4-week follow-up, had equaled the TRAD/C intervention on achievement test scores, had earned greater GPA gains, and had been rated by their English and math teachers as demonstrating greater improvements in class attendance and work habits after the intervention than their 9th and l0th grade counterparts under both the TRAD/C or the C-II treatments across program classifications; (2) 9th grade subjects under both the TRAD/C treatment and the no-treatment (C-II) had demonstrated greater improvements on these measures than their 10th grade counterparts across program classifications; (3) these findings have provided empirical evidence to support the use of MPSI by school-based psychologists in urban high school settings among African-American students, across both ninth and tenth grade special and general education programs, who are placed at-risk for school failure and school dropout; (4) these findings have further suggested that the MPSI intervention may be used to augment or replace an existing traditional dropout prevention program within an urban high school setting among a wider student population.

Book An Evaluation of the Effects of Conflict Resolution Training on the Attitudes and Behavior of Sixth grade Students at a Public Urban Middle School

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Effects of Conflict Resolution Training on the Attitudes and Behavior of Sixth grade Students at a Public Urban Middle School written by Eric Benjamin Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects that peer mediation/conflict resolution training has on the behavior, attitudes and problem solving strategies of sixth grade urban students. The participants were randomly drawn from the middle school population of the City of York, Pennsylvania. An experimental pretest post-test design was used to conduct the investigation. Information used to measure the dependent variables was gathered from a Likert scale questionnaire and from district discipline records. The data were analyzed using an analysis of variance and chi square procedure. The effect of peer mediation/conflict resolution training on behavior was significant. The control group had more incidents of anti-social behavior than the experimental group. Additionally, a significant effect was found regarding attitudes. The experimental group was found to demonstrate more pro-social attitudes than the control group. Training also had a significant effect on problem solving skills. The experimental group scores indicated greater use of pro-social behavioral skills in solving conflicts than the control group. Results from the data provide information that can enable administrators to address discipline concerns arising from naturally occurring conflict. -- Abstract.
