Book The Effects of Aerodynamic Heating and Heat Transfer on the Surface Temperature of a Body of Revolution in Steady Supersonic Flight

Download or read book The Effects of Aerodynamic Heating and Heat Transfer on the Surface Temperature of a Body of Revolution in Steady Supersonic Flight written by Richard Scherrer and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method for determining the convective cooling requirement in the laminar-boundary-layer region of a body of revolution in high-speed flight was developed and applied to an example body. The cooling requirement for the example body was determined as a function of Mach number, altitude, size, and a surface-temperature parameter. The maximum value of Mach number considered was 3.0 and the altitudes considered were those within the lower constant-temperature region of the atmosphere (40,000 to 120,000 ft). The extent of the laminar boundary layer was determined approximately at each condition as a function of the variables considered.

Book Supersonic Wave Drag of Nonlifting Sweptback Tapered Wings with Mach Lines Behind the Line of Maximum Thickness

Download or read book Supersonic Wave Drag of Nonlifting Sweptback Tapered Wings with Mach Lines Behind the Line of Maximum Thickness written by Kenneth Margolis and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave drag equations are derived for rhombic-profile tapered wings with maximum-thickness line swept less than the Mach line. Variations in drag with taper ratio, aspect ratio, sweepback, and Mach number are determined. Calculations are presented for representative plan forms and for a family of wings having equal root bending stress.

Book Analysis of the Effects of Boundary layer Control on the Power off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane

Download or read book Analysis of the Effects of Boundary layer Control on the Power off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane written by Elmer A. Horton and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effects of boundary-layer control on the landing performance characteristics of a liaison type of airplane having a payload of 1500 pounds and a flight duration of 5 hours. The aspect ratio was varied from 5 to 15, the wing span from 30 to 100 feet, and the brake horsepower from 300 to 1200. The use of boundary-layer control caused reduction in total landing distance (25 to 40 percent), ground-run distance, gliding speed, and stalling speed whereas sinking speed was increased only slightly.

Book A Study of the Transient Behavior of Shock Waves in Transonic Channel Flows

Download or read book A Study of the Transient Behavior of Shock Waves in Transonic Channel Flows written by Robert V. Hess and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accuracy of the result obtained in a fundamental paper by Kantrowitz (NACA TN 1225) that a small short-time lowering of the back pressure in steady, shock-free, transonic diffuser flow causes a stationary or trapped shock to form near the critical sonic channel throat is investigated by considering the contribution of a higher-order term in the short-time calculations which was neglected in Kantrowitz's paper. In this higher approximation to the short-time effects, the shock is no longer stationary or trapped unless it is supported by a negative steady-flow back pressure; the result thus is no long in disagreement with steady-flow solutions for stationary shocks.
