Book excerpt: Adolescence is a developmental period of accelerating physical, psychological, social! cultural, and cognitive development, often characterized by confronting and surmounting a myriad of challenges and establishing a sense of self-identity and autonomy. It is also, unfortunately, a period fraught with many threats to the health and well-being of adoles cents and with substantial consequent impairment and disability. Many of the adverse health consequences experienced by adolescents are, to a large extent, the result of their risk behaviors. Many adolescents today, and perhaps an increasing number in the future, are at risk for death, disease, and other adverse health outcomes that are not primarily biomedical in origin. In general, there has been a marked change in the causes of morbidity and mortality among adolescents. Previously, infectious diseases accounted for a dispro portionate share of adolescent morbidity and mortality. At present, however, the over whelming toll of adolescent morbidity and mortality is the result of lifestyle practices.

Too often, prompted by technical and scientific progress, we have ignored even marginalized-the vital "human element" in health thinking and prac tice. Thus, for example, while family planning programs focused on providing a choice among safe and effective contraceptive methods (a supremely worthy goal), the central issue of sexuality and sexual behavior was generally neglected. Similarly, the enormous and important efforts to develop rapid and reliable diagnostic and treatment methods for sexually transmitted diseases helped divert attention away from the crucial issues of sexual practice. In short, we seem to have difficulty addressing the fundamental behaviors-including sex, drug taking and other intoxications, and violence-that are central to the major causes of preventable morbidity, disability, and premature mortality in the world today. Our collective reluctance to examine and understand ourselves is also expressed in the oft-repeated pipedream that scientific progress will "take care of" the HIV / AIDS pandemic by delivering a preventive vaccine, an effective cure, or both. Yet even a cursory glance at the relationship between scientific/ technical progress and health shows that meeting the scientific challenges is only one step toward effective application of the vaccine or drug. It is typical, not atypical, that hepatitis B vaccine is only now becoming relatively freely available to large populations in the developing world, more than a decade after the vaccine's licensure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small rural community has high incidence rates of chlamydia (4,751 per 100,000) and gonorrhea (970 per 100,000) in females 15-24 years old. Data obtained from Texas Health and Human Services showed that incidence rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea in females 15-24 years old were higher in Navarro County, Texas, than the state of Texas. Texas schools do not mandate sex health education. There is a gap in school-based sexual health education available to 18- and 19-year-old females residing in this rural community in Texas. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the impact of school-based sexual health education on young females' knowledge and attitudes for healthy sexual choices. The education program was an evidence-based program called Choosing the Best. The target population was females 18-19 years old living in a rural community in Texas. The main challenge of the study was the lack of participants. Due to a lack of participation and only one student attending the study, statistical analysis could not be conducted. The student evaluated the sexual health class by completing pre- and postsurveys using Barrett's Power as Knowing Participation in Change Tool (PKPCT). Qualitative data received from the one student showed positive comments on the benefits of sexual health education. Recommendations for future research are to perform the study in a school environment and lower the age limits for the target population. Using social media delivery methods for broadcasting the education class may reduce adolescents' fear of attending a sexual health class and would promote attendance. More research needs to be done to evaluate how a school-based sexual health program impacts students' attitudes toward healthy sexual behaviors.

It was five chapters, thorough and well researched project work. Each of the chapters of the study work contained a new and fresh information on the study. The chapter one of the study examined the introductory part as in statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, hypotheses, delimitation, limitation and scope of the study. In chapter two, related and relevant topics to the study were reviewed to serve as theoretical framework to the study. The chapter three was succulently written to discuss the methods and procedures adopted in the course of conducting the study it also revealed the research instrument used, how it was administrated and analysed, were also discussed. A total number of seven hundred were randomly selected as sample for the study, having used eight senior secondary school adolescent in Epe area of Lagos State. The chapter four was analytically and descriptively written to present the data sourced through the use of questionnaire for analysis and hypothesis testing. The findings, showed that the respondents had adequate knowledge about sexuality education and its health consequences, was attributed to the various campaigns being mounted by government and non-governments organisation and by extension, the respondents exhibited some positive sexual behaviours.

Book excerpt: Approximately one-third of the world's population is between 10-24 years of age and twenty percent of Nigerians are adolescents. This study s aim was to assess the impact of sex education intervention on knowledge attitude and practice of sexuality, among female adolescents in a female senior secondary school in Kaduna. The study was a quasi experimental study and the study population comprised senior female secondary school students. A multistage sampling method was used to select a sample size of 295 for the study and 283 for the control groups respectively. The study led to increased knowledge of adolescents sexuality after an intervention programme of family life education was taught. Students in the study group with positive sexual attitude also improved. Sexuality education has been shown in this study to improve the knowledge and attitude of students in the intervention group.
