Book The Effect of an Integrated Adapted Physical Education Setting on the Motor Performance of Preschool Children with Developmental Delays

Download or read book The Effect of an Integrated Adapted Physical Education Setting on the Motor Performance of Preschool Children with Developmental Delays written by Lauriece L. Zittel and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an integrated adapted physical education setting on the motor performance of preschool children with developmental delays. Subjects in this study participated in segregated and integrated adapted physical education classes. During the integrated conditions, same-age peers without delays participated in activities as "proximity peers" (Jenkins, Speltz & Odom, 1985). Child-directed activities were presented in each class and subjects were observed practicing locomotor and object control skills. The quality of each performance was analyzed to determine the number of critical elements present in the performance and the level of teacher or peer prompt required to initiate and complete each performance. A single subject reversal design (A-B-A-B) was used in this investigation. Four children with developmental delays were filmed within an eight-week school schedule while practicing two fundamental gross motor skills during segregated and integrated conditions. The level and trend of the data was calculated to describe the quality of each child's motor performance within each condition, between conditions, and across segregated and integrated conditions. The results of this study provide evidence that children with developmental delays are able to maintain their level of gross motor skill and independence within an integrated adapted physical education setting. Although day-to- day variability was calculated for each subject, overall skill level remained stable and their level of independence was not compromised in the integrated setting. Recommendations for future research are made based upon the results of this investigation.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book The Effect of Voice Inflection Combined with an External Focus of Attention on Standing Long Jump Performance and Kinematics in 9 year old to 11 year old Novice Physical Education Students

Download or read book The Effect of Voice Inflection Combined with an External Focus of Attention on Standing Long Jump Performance and Kinematics in 9 year old to 11 year old Novice Physical Education Students written by Peter A. Verdin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was to examine how voice inflection, a paraverbal communication element, combined with an external focus of attention (EFA) or interntal focus of attention (IFA) impacts jumping performance and kinematics. Participants included 21 male and female fourth and fifth-grade physical education students from Future Public School in Garden City, Idaho. The inclusion criterion was being in the fourth or fifth grade. Exclusion criteria were any injury, illness, or other circumstance that would have prevented the child from participating to the best of their ability. The injury was defined as any physical ailment that would negatively affect jump performance. Participants performed a standing long jump pretest under neutral conditions. Seven days later, participants were randomly assigned to four groups using the pretest data, stratified into quartiles, as the blocking variable. These groups were: one that received an IFA without voice inflection (IN), an IFA with voice inflection (INI), an EFA without voice inflection (EX), and an EFA with voice inflection (EXI) on the standing long jump task. The two internal focus groups' instruction was to jump toward a cone set at the distance of each subject's pretest jump distance. There was a significant change pretest to posttest distance between groups. The IN and INI groups did not differ significantly prestest to posttest, nor did the EX and EXI groups. The EX and EXI groups both outperformed the INI group. There was a strong correlation between jump distances and body angles at takeoff. There was no significant effect on alpha between groups. Using a voice inflection on the adverb of the task instruction did not enhance jump distance or kinematics. On average, an external focus of attention improved jump distance, while an internal focus of attention resulted in participants performing worse. These results confirm the benefits of using an external focus of attention with children and novice skill participants.

Book Preschool Children

Download or read book Preschool Children written by Leone Colombo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During infancy and pre-school age, movement is an integral part of human life. This book discusses the correlation between cognitive and motor functioning in pre-schoolers, as well as the motor performance differences between boys and girls. Additionally, oral health problems affect children's quality of life by impairing their physical and psychological and social functioning well-being. The main oral health related problem in pre-school children is associated with dental pain that may affect sleep, cause difficulty in eating and affect learning. This book explores how the mouth affects quality of life and the epidemiology of dental pain including the determinants of oral diseases. In addition, the authors review strategies to promote oral health in pre-school children. Other chapters show methods and techniques used for evaluation of lung function status in pre-school children. Those techniques are commonly used in pre-school age and make possible not only to help in diagnosis, but also in controlling and monitoring the disease progress or efficacy of the treatment.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool

Download or read book A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool written by Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are robbing young children of play time at home and school in an effort to give them a head start on academic skills like reading and mathematics. Yet the scientific evidence suggests that eliminating play from the lives of children is taking preschool education in the wrong direction. This brief but compelling book provides a strong counterargument to the rising tide of didactic instruction on preschool classrooms. The authors present scientific evidence in support of three points: 1) children need both unstructured free time and playful learning under the gentle guidance of adults to best prepare for entrance into formal school; 2) academic and social development are inextricably intertwined, so academic learning must not trump attention to social development; and 3) learning and play are not incompatible. Rather, playful learning captivates children's minds in ways that support better academic and social outcomes as well as strategies for lifelong learning. Written in clear and expressive language, this book offers a comprehensive review of research supporting playful learning along with succinct policy and practice recommendations that derive from this research. A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool is a must read for teachers, policy makers, and parents interested in educating a generation of life-long learners who are ready for school and ready to compete in the knowledge-based economy of the 21st century.
