Book Clinical Group Supervision in Mental Health Counseling Training

Download or read book Clinical Group Supervision in Mental Health Counseling Training written by Maria Eugenia Araneda Bengoechea and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Clinical supervision that occurs in small groups involves interrelated dynamics that occur between group members and supervisors. However, literature exploring how clinical supervisors understand and approach group supervision process is limited. Proposed from a conceptual framework grounded in groups systems and constructivist literature, this study aimed to better understand (a) how supervisors who utilize group supervision understand, promote, and address group process within these groups; (b) how supervisees experience group process and their supervisors handling of group process in their supervision groups; and c) what similarities and differences regarding group process emerge when comparing perspectives of supervisors and supervisees from the same group. This investigation used a qualitative, constructivist Grounded Theory design (Charmaz, 2011) to collect and analyze data. Four counseling supervisors and their supervision groups were part of the study. The data collection strategy involved two individual interviews with each supervisor, group interviews with each of the supervisors' groups, and observations of group supervision sessions. Findings show that supervisors had their own philosophy of group supervision, but also that they shared numerous beliefs regarding this process and how to approach it, many of which followed under a constructivist frame. Participants considered supervisors' genuineness as crucial in promoting a group supervision environment that allowed engaging in a horizontal and safe way. They also underscored the benefit of discussing the supervisors' approach to supervision and mutual expectations early in the supervision process. While participants shared different perspectives regarding having an initial discussion of group norms in their supervision groups, findings suggest that it is important to have certain norms established early on. In addition, supervisors conveyed that they used a specific group supervision structure, in part, to promote an appropriate group supervision environment. Overall, beginner trainees perceived the need for a group supervision structure that enabled them to receive more direct feedback and instruction than advanced students, who acknowledged the benefit of having more time for self-care built into their group supervision time. Supervisors also identified challenges to creating an appropriate group supervision environment. More specifically, they identified challenges to supervisees' active participation and peer-feedback. Supervisors addressed these challenges using strategies that ranged from non-direct questioning to teaching. Supervisees, however, appeared to need a balance between non-direct and direct strategies. Lastly, supervisors suggested addressing additional challenges to participation, such as competitive behavior, employing strategies that maintain the group's focus and safety. These findings have important implications for clinical supervisors, for supervision training, as well as for future research"--Pages vii-viii.

Book The New Handbook of Counseling Supervision

Download or read book The New Handbook of Counseling Supervision written by L. DiAnne Borders and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-04-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this ground-breaking book continues the mission of its predecessor: to provide a "best principles" and "best practices" overview of the counseling supervision process, one that is firmly rooted in the recent explosion of empirical research in this field. Sponsored by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the presentation is targeted primarily at master's-level practitioners who want "how-to" applications of the research literature (with examples) rather than a comprehensive review of the supervision literature. Like the first edition, this revised book is also a useful supplement for more academic texts used for doctoral-level instruction in counseling supervision. Key changes in this new edition include greater attention to multicultural and diversity issues and new chapters on group supervision and on technology. Also new are discussion questions and vignettes meant to enhance application of key concepts in each chapter as well as more sample materials and forms for practice.
