Book Plan B Emergency Contraception Sampled University Students Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors

Download or read book Plan B Emergency Contraception Sampled University Students Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors written by Natalie Nicole Hazel and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to assess and evaluate sampled university students’ knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive. To collect data, a 29 item survey was developed and administered to students in sampled classrooms at Minnesota State University, Mankato campus regarding their knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive; as well as demographic information. The findings of the study indicated there were some participants who have much knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive. However, findings also showed that there were a number of participants who lacked knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive pill. Despite lacking knowledge, many students had strong attitudes about when Plan B emergency contraception should be used. Recommendations for further study includ conducting the study with students at other universities, and investigating if the use of Plan B has increased since it has become available over the counter for anyone at any age. Further, health education specialists can provide education on regular use of contraception and emergency contraception to students in high school so they have some knowledge before entering college.

Book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students

This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC. Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding the purpose and use of EC, with the majority of respondents answering eight out of ten questions correctly. A chi-square analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between gender and attitudes towards EC. Data showed a significant relationship between gender and attitude about (1) whether the advanced provision of EC contributes to increased risky sexual behavior and (2) whether the use of EC is the females decision only. Regarding types of risky sexual behaviors, four behaviors were evaluated: sex under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, age of first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners within the past year, and frequency of use of protection with sexual partner. Overall, of those respondents who were sexually active, majority engaged in few risky sexual behaviors and appeared to participate in safe sexual practices (having few sexual partners and frequent use of protection).

Book A Correlational Study of Self esteem and Attitudes Toward Contraceptive Efficacy to the Levels of Sexually Risky Behavior Among Undergraduate College Students

Download or read book A Correlational Study of Self esteem and Attitudes Toward Contraceptive Efficacy to the Levels of Sexually Risky Behavior Among Undergraduate College Students written by Nora Zappas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior in undergraduate college students, with special reference to self-esteem and attitudes toward contraceptive efficacy. Because unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent among young adults, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship among factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior. This quantitative, correlational, and descriptive study used a questionnaire and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale to measure levels of the respondent's demographics, sexual health beliefs, knowledge, behaviors, self-esteem and contraceptive efficacy with a nonprobability sample of 76 undergraduate students at California State University, Sacramento. Overall findings showed that higher contraceptive efficacy contributes to safer sexual behaviors, but did not find correlations between self-esteem and sexual behavior. While some aspects of contraceptive efficacy were not strongly related to self-esteem, there is significance to evidence the fact that higher levels of self-esteem can assist in empowering people to stop sex, even at the risk of upsetting their partner, in favor of protecting their own health. The level of fulfillment in respondent's social life was found to correlate to contraceptive efficacy scores in this study. Additionally, higher levels of perceived sexual health knowledge of the respondents is correlated to higher levels of contraceptive efficacy. Recommendations include the need for targeted interventions to increase awareness, knowledge, and efficacy of sexual behavior among young college students; particularly to assist at-risk populations in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that nearly 60 percent of all U.S. pregnancies--and 81 percent of pregnancies among adolescents--are unintended. Yet the topic of preventing these unintended pregnancies has long been treated gingerly because of personal sensitivities and public controversies, especially the angry debate over abortion. Additionally, child welfare advocates long have overlooked the connection between pregnancy planning and the improved well-being of families and communities that results when children are wanted. Now, current issues--health care and welfare reform, and the new international focus on population--are drawing attention to the consequences of unintended pregnancy. In this climate The Best Intentions offers a timely exploration of family planning issues from a distinguished panel of experts. This committee sheds much-needed light on the questions and controversies surrounding unintended pregnancy. The book offers specific recommendations to put the United States on par with other developed nations in terms of contraceptive attitudes and policies, and it considers the effectiveness of over 20 pregnancy prevention programs. The Best Intentions explores problematic definitions--"unintended" versus "unwanted" versus "mistimed"--and presents data on pregnancy rates and trends. The book also summarizes the health and social consequences of unintended pregnancies, for both men and women, and for the children they bear. Why does unintended pregnancy occur? In discussions of "reasons behind the rates," the book examines Americans' ambivalence about sexuality and the many other social, cultural, religious, and economic factors that affect our approach to contraception. The committee explores the complicated web of peer pressure, life aspirations, and notions of romance that shape an individual's decisions about sex, contraception, and pregnancy. And the book looks at such practical issues as the attitudes of doctors toward birth control and the place of contraception in both health insurance and "managed care." The Best Intentions offers frank discussion, synthesis of data, and policy recommendations on one of today's most sensitive social topics. This book will be important to policymakers, health and social service personnel, foundation executives, opinion leaders, researchers, and concerned individuals. May
