Book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic

Download or read book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book The Appropriateness of Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine

Download or read book The Appropriateness of Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine written by Ian D. Coulter and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1996 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results from the RAND study on the appropriateness of spinal manipulation and mobilization of the cervical spine. The study was designed to ascertain the clinical criteria for the appropriate use of cervical manipulation and mobilization to treat conditions such as neck pain and headache and to document treatment complications. A review was conducted of more than 500 articles from the medical and chiropractic literature. From this extensive review, a set of indications was created for manipulation and mobilization for neck pain and headaches and for subcategories of patient types. A panel was convened of back-pain experts from the disciplines of orthopedics, chiropractic, family medicine, and neurology to rate for appropriateness the indications for spinal manipulation and mobilization. The panelists rated the set of indications individually and then were convened as a group to rate the same indications following reporting and discussion of the individual ratings. This report presents the results of the final ratings and describes the methodology. It should be of interest to clinicians who perform manipulation and mobilization of the cervical spine, to clinicians who work with patients with cervical problems, and to health researchers and others concerned with the appropriate indications for performing manipulation and mobilization.

Book Manipulation of the Spine Thorax and Pelvis E Book

Download or read book Manipulation of the Spine Thorax and Pelvis E Book written by Peter Gibbons and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this popular book continues to present the latest scientific evidence for the successful use of the high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust technique. Prepared in a readily accessible, amply illustrated format, this book is designed to equip practitioners with a detailed understanding of the underlying basis of the HVLA thrust technique and the best means to safely employ it in the effective management of a range of disorders of the spine and pelvic regions. The book is arranged in three sections to maximise understanding of what can be challenging areas to comprehend and effectively manage. Section One explores the biomechanics of movement and forces between adjacent vertebrae followed by a discussion of positioning and ‘locking’. These chapters are then followed by a discussion about safety with particular reference to the management of the cervical spine. A chapter on evidence – and what represents good medical evidence – concludes. Section Two presents – using an ample array of clear photographs and useful summary boxes – over 40 HVLA techniques ranging from the atlanto-occipital joint (C0-C1) to the coccyx. Section Three concludes with treatment failures (often, technique derived) and analysis. Prepared by authors of international renown - and now with an associated website containing over 45 minutes of useful film footage - this book will be ideal for all manual therapy practitioners dealing with the management of the spine and pelvic areas. Step-by-step coverage of 41 commonly used manipulation (HVLA) thrust techniques supported by 275 photographs/drawings and 56 videos Concise technique summaries provide an innovative review process A troubleshooting section in which difficulties with technique application can be addressed Comprehensive review of spinal kinematics and spinal positioning for manipulation techniques Examines evidence relating to cavitation and the clinical effectiveness of spinal manipulation Access to companion website – www.spinethoraxpelvis.com – containing: video bank of 56 videos (13 new) demonstrating HVLA thrust techniques from Part B of the book image bank of all 275 images from the book 2-colour throughout with over 30 new images Clinical history, presentation and examination for patients presenting with cervical artery dissection Addresses the important issues surrounding patient consent Additional research and guidelines that support the: use of HVLA thrust techniques use of spinal manipulation in the treatment of radiculopathy, pregnant women and children

Book Handbook of Spine Technology

Download or read book Handbook of Spine Technology written by Boyle C. Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the most authoritative and up-to-date reference on spine technology written for practitioners, researchers, and students in bioengineering and clinical medicine. It is the first resource to provide a road map of both the history of the field and its future by documenting the poor clinical outcomes and failed spinal implants that contributed to problematic patient outcomes, as well as the technologies that are currently leading the way towards positive clinical outcomes. The contributors are leading authorities in the fields of engineering and clinical medicine and represent academia, industry, and international government and regulatory agencies. The chapters are split into five sections, with the first addressing clinical issues such as anatomy, pathology, oncology, trauma, diagnosis, and imaging studies. The second section, on biomechanics, delves into fixation devices, the bone implant interface, total disc replacements, injury mechanics, and more. The last three sections, on technology, are divided into materials, commercialized products, and surgery. All appropriate chapters will be continually updated and available on the publisher’s website, in order to keep this important reference as up-to-date as possible in a fast-moving field.
