Download or read book The Effect of the Student Success Skills Small Group Counseling Intervention on Factors Associated with Dropout Potential in High School written by Jodie Weinstein and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study is to add to the outcome research on effective school counseling interventions and to specifically evaluate the effectiveness of the Student Success Skills (SSS) small group intervention with students identified as having drop out potential in the 9th grade. This study analyzed two years of pre-existing, non-identifiable student data (N = 167) collected by school counselors at one high school in South Florida. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine differences in academic grades, standardized test scores, and absences between the students who did participate in the SSS small group intervention when compared to those students who did not participate. Statistically significant differences were found between groups in all three dropout potential factors (GPA, test scores, and absences) supporting the use of SSS small group school counseling intervention with students at risk for dropping out. Effect size estimates were reported for each of the measures.

Download or read book The Effect of Group Counseling Intervention on the Performance of Rural Students on the Georgia High School Graduation Tests written by Donna Caudell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increase in high-stakes testing, educators continue to search for the best methodologies for assisting students in maximizing academic achievement and successful completion of graduation requirements including mandatory tests for high school graduation. At the time of this study, students graduating from Georgia high schools were required to pass five academic subject area tests in order to receive a high school diploma. Psychometric theory, social cognitive theory, and cognitive behavioral theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. Students from a rural high school in Georgia comprised the sample. This quantitative study employed a posttest-only control group design with randomization. Students who had failed at least one of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) were randomly placed into control and treatment groups. Students in the treatment group participated in an 8-session group guidance program, Student Success Skills. Control and treatment groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U tests for math, social studies and English language arts. The results of this study found no significant difference between the groups' test scores.

Book Preventing Adolescent Depression

Download or read book Preventing Adolescent Depression written by Jami F. Young and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Adolescent Skills Training (IPT-AST) is a program that teaches communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills to improve relationships and prevent the development of depression in adolescents. IPT-AST was developed to be delivered in schools and other community settings where adolescents are most likely to receive services, with the hope that IPT-AST can help prevent depression and other problem behaviors before they become more severe. Preventing Adolescent Depression: Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Adolescent Skills Training provides a detailed description of the program to guide mental health practitioners to implement IPT-AST. Session-by-session descriptions specify the structure and content of each session. Examples of how group leaders can discuss specific topics are provided throughout the book, and the appendix includes session outlines, communication notecards, cue cards, and more. Chapters also outline key issues related to implementation of IPT-AST, including selecting adolescents to participate in group; conducting IPT-AST in schools, primary care offices, mental health clinics, and other diverse settings; working with adolescents at varying levels of risk for depression; and dealing with common clinical issues. Finally, the book outlines the research on this depression prevention program. Preventing Adolescent Depression is appropriate for a wide variety of mental health practitioners including psychologists, social workers, and school counselors.

Book The Successful Transitions Initiative

Download or read book The Successful Transitions Initiative written by Hope Nestor and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People who fail to attain a high school education face a multitude of risk factors associated with health, employment, crime, substance abuse, and their personal lives. The Successful Transitions Initiative on Prince Edward Island, a unique program targeting youth at-risk of dropping out of high school, teaches the youth basic skills in hopes of improving their academic outcomes. Skills development programs with similar mandates and curriculum are growing in popularity across Canada. It is important that the impact of these programs be understood to ensure they are affecting the participants positively and to improve program delivery. A case study was completed to understand the impact of the Successful Transitions Initiative. Pre and post-test survey data and post intervention focus group data were analysed to measure the 2017 Successful Transitions Initiative participant-reported outcomes of the program. The participants reported improved communication skills, pride and a sense of accomplishment, higher levels of selfconfidence, self-actualization, internal locus of control, increased school engagement, and newly formed positive relationships. The Successful Transitions Initiative case study also revealed trends that support a relationship between the magnitude and the longevity of the effect. Limitations of this study unearthed recommendations for future research designs and methods.

Book Instructional and Structural Factors Related to Successful Dropout Prevention and Recovery Programs

Download or read book Instructional and Structural Factors Related to Successful Dropout Prevention and Recovery Programs written by Hector Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the salient factors that influence student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to return to school as well as the programmatic factors, both structural and instructional, that support students to compete graduation. Three research questions guided the study including: (1) What district-wide programmatic interventions, both structural and instructional, seem to be successful in retaining recovered dropouts and in keep students on the verge of dropping out in school actively engaged in pursuing graduation? (2) What motivates student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to return to school? and (3) What motivates recovered student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to remain in school? Accordingly, this study was designed with a qualitative collective case study approach to examine one high school dropout prevention program and one dropout recovery campus. Data collection included document reviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Findings revealed stakeholders’ perceptions of the efficacy of several structural interventions to keep students on track to graduation. These included creating an academic options framework to meet student academic needs, using student cohort groups to monitor academic progress, and using campus leaver teams to track students who withdrew from school. Furthermore, the findings show the benefits of several instructional interventions including an online curriculum offering students flexibility to complete lost course credits, academic support through direct teaching and small group instruction, and individualized academic plans based on student needs. Finally, results showed that students were primarily motivated to return to school based on positive family influences and a desire for a better future. The study also revealed that students remained in school because of positive teacher relationships, small class sizes, and support services.

Book The Impact of Developing Self regulated Learning Strategies on Incoming At risk High School Freshmen

Download or read book The Impact of Developing Self regulated Learning Strategies on Incoming At risk High School Freshmen written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first year of high school is the best predictor for future student achievement and potential student dropout. Without an intervention, previous academic failure may maintain its course, or even compound, when coupled with the challenges of transitioning to the high school. For these reasons, it was critical to examine if an intervention could assist students, who had experienced previous marginal academic performance, during their first year of high school. Research has suggested that, for all children, prior academic performance does not necessarily predict future success, but an important factor may be a student's ability to develop Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) skills or strategies. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention program (Academic Center) by examining if at-risk students involved in the program experienced development of SRL skills or attributes, reduced the gap of SRL skills with their non-at-risk peers, and/or if they had increased student achievement outcomes compared to similar at-risk students during a three year review of educational records who did not have exposure to the intervention. A quasi-experimental design allowed for cohort groups to be compared in which one group received an intervention. Pre- and post-test data were analyzed and compared to a greater population of other groups during two survey periods consisting of September and June. An ex post facto design allowed an established comparison group with no exposure to SRL to be contrasted with the at-risk students receiving the SRL intervention. One hypothesis of the study, that at-risk students could reduce the gap in SRL skills and attributes with their peers through an intervention, could not be determined by the findings of this study. However, the at-risk students showed similar change in SRL as their non-at-risk peers in the areas of self-efficacy, cognitive strategies, intrinsic value, test anxiety, and self-regulation. A second hypothesis, that at-risk students who were provide the intervention would attain higher student acheivement than their previously established comparison group was supported by the findings in the areas of core credits earned, elective credits earned, total credits earned, and core grade point average.

Book Students Parents and School Staff s Perceptions about Factors Supporting Student Engagement in a Satellite High School

Download or read book Students Parents and School Staff s Perceptions about Factors Supporting Student Engagement in a Satellite High School written by Julia C. Henrich and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the literature regarding high school dropout rates and efforts to decrease student failure reveal that both the reasons for students’ decisions to drop out and the efforts by schools and districts to reduce these rates are complex. Many stakeholders point to student dropout rates as evidence of the failure of the American education system, and have proposed various reform measures, though significant reform has yet to be realized. An understanding of the complexity of the situation is required in order for schools to more successfully support students in school completion and diploma acquisition. Importantly, schools must recognize that the changes needed to increase student success must happen within the school systems, rather than in the lives of students and families outside of schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’, parents’ and school staff members’ perceptions of the elements or characteristics of a satellite high school that were most beneficial and least beneficial in assisting students with obtaining a high school diploma, in order to identify practices and interventions that support student success. The researcher believed that the collective perspective of students, parents, and their teachers and staff would be relevant for school districts in improving structures and practices to assist students in remaining in school and earning their high school diplomas. Through a qualitative research study design that included three homogeneous focus group interviews of students, their parents, and the satellite school staff, involving a total of twenty participants, the researcher was able to collect data related to perceptions of the current satellite high school experience. After coding the data collected, the researcher identified major themes related to components of the satellite high school that students and their families perceived as leading to their success in finishing high school and earning a diploma. The researcher recommended the following: (1) changes to current school structures to reflect more diverse organizational and administrative models adapted to address challenges students face and which are not adequately addressed in a traditional school environment; (2) increased, targeted professional development for school staff working in alternative school environments providing training in specific strategies and supports designed to making connections and developing positive, supportive relationships with students; (3) the creation of a satellite high school advisory board to include representatives from all stakeholder groups to develop a continuous cycle of program improvement for the satellite high school which incorporates essential feedback all stakeholders; (4) additional research involving similar stakeholder groups from other public school districts to assess the extent to which the same or similar findings would be uncovered. These recommendations are meant to inform school districts and school leaders as they work to increase their efforts to make improvements to their school structures and organizations to provide opportunities for students at risk of dropping out to meet with educational success as measured by the completion of the high school diploma.
