Book excerpt: This dissertation, "The Effects of Student Involvement and College Environment on Students' Learning and Living Experience at World-class University: a Comparative Case Study of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)" by Yew-hung, Roy, Chan, 陳佑雄, was obtained from The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong) and is being sold pursuant to Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License. Abstract: This comparative research examined the effects of student involvement and college environment on students' learning and living experience delivered by two aspiring world-class universities in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Few studies have shown how the levels of student involvement and college environment can benefit students at world-class institution. Earlier research done by Pascarella (1985) suggested that college environment impact students' learning and living experience. Research in the field has also shown that through adequate campus facilities and campus resources, college student interaction and involvement can be promoted. Adapting a quantitative research approach, this comparative case-study utilizes the "Student Involvement Survey" from Ohio State University(OSU) and the "Student Satisfaction Study" from Birmingham City University(BCU) to examine students' learning and living experience at aspiring world-class institutions. The study was conducted at two major research institutions from the Universitas 21 network: The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU). The finding indicated that: a) student involvement (academic and social) affect students' learning and living experience, b) college environment (academic, campus, and interpersonal) affect students' learning and living experience, and c) students' learning and living experience impact the making of world-class universities in China. The study extends from earlier research on student involvement and college environment from the U.S. and the U.K. into China's modern higher education. The results of this research suggest that student involvement and college environment plays a salient effect on Chinese students' learning and living experience and its overall developmental plan for world-class universities in China. In the end, the researcher provides senior administrators, policy makers and student affairs practitioners a few recommendations to further create an educationally powerful environment and experience for all students at aspiring world-class institution in China. This book was released on 2013 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In educational literature set in Western contexts, student performance is linked to positive family involvement and home environment; however, literature on the educational experience of college students in non-Western contexts, including the gulf region, is scarce. Using both student and guardian surveys, this quantitative study investigates the effect of home environment and family involvement on the educational experience of students in a federally funded college in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as links between these factors and students' academic achievement. Results indicated that academic performance was linked to specific family involvement behaviors-- categorized as enablers-- financial, logistical, and physical supports; influences-- interaction intended to shape values, opinions and attitudes; and engagements-- direct and demonstrable interaction-- and to specific home environment factors including parents' marital statuses, gender, family size, presence of siblings in college or university, parents' education levels, and mother's working status." --Abstract.

Book Taiwanese College Students Quality of Effort and Their Self reported Educational Attainment

Download or read book Taiwanese College Students Quality of Effort and Their Self reported Educational Attainment written by Mei-Chin Lin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the extent to which Taiwanese college students devoted effort to their college experience and its relation to their attainment of the intended outcome of higher education. The study also examined whether student involvement theory can be applied to college students outside of the United States. Specifically, it asked: how well does the theory apply to students attending Taiwanese colleges? The sample of the study consisted of 631 students from two five-year colleges in a district of northern Taiwan. Data was collected by giving the Chinese version of the Five-Year College Student Experiences Questionnaire (FYCSEQ) to the sample of subjects. The questionnaire was adapted from the third edition of the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) originally developed by Pace in 1979 and the Community College Students Experiences Questionnaire (CCSEQ) developed by Friedlander, Pace, and Lehman in 1990 and translated by the author. The questionnaire was distributed and administered to each classroom by the researcher or by a designated student or teacher. Responses to questionnaires was entered into a database by hand. The results of the present study revealed that Taiwanese college students' effort devoted to a wide range of college activities was significantly correlated with their self-reported educational attainment. The more effort students devoted to their college experience, the higher the gains they reported. The results coincide with results of several studies of American college students (Davis & Murrell, 1993a; Pace, 1984; Pace et al; 1988). The results of the present study support the theories of student involvement and quality of effort (Astin, 1984; Pace, 1984). These results of the study provide empirical evidence that student involvement theory can be applied to college students outside the United States, especially students enrolled in Taiwanese five-year college students. Implications for future research are discussed, including the need to study a broader sample of Taiwanese college students and cross-cultural studies to establish distinctive features of Taiwanese college experiences.
