Book excerpt: Music and sport are both highly significant cultural forms, yet the substantial and longstanding connections between the two have largely been overlooked. Sporting Sounds addresses this oversight in an intriguing and innovative collection of essays. With contributions from leading international psychologists, sociologists, historians, musicologists and specialists in sports and cultural studies, the book illuminates our understanding of the vital part music has played in the performance, reception and commodification of sport. It explores a fascinating range of topics and case studies, including: The use of music to enhance sporting performance Professional applications of music in sport Sporting anthems as historical commemorations Music at the Olympics Supporter rock music in Swedish sport Caribbean cricket and calypso music From local fan cultures to international mega-events, music and sport are inextricably entwined. Sporting Sounds is a stimulating and illuminating read for anybody with an interest in either of these cultural forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon entering an exercise facility it would be inconceivable not to hear some form of music playing while people are exercising. Whether music is playing over the loudspeakers, or individuals are listening to their iPods, music is a vital part of exercise for many individuals. With so much emphasis on listening to music during physical activity the question arises, "What makes music such a popular component of exercise?" Many studies have assessed the effects of music on exercise (Elliott, 2007; Karageorghis, 1999; Karageorghis & Priest, 2008; Kravitz, 1994; Matesic & Cromartie, 2002). These studies indicate that music has positive effects of lowering heart rate, decreasing rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and providing an overall escape from the discomfort of exercise. Most of these studies have assessed how music tempo and music preference affect exercise enjoyment; however, few studies have assessed the effect of genre on the psychological traits listed above. Some studies suggest that the effects of music during exercise are decreased heart rate, slowed oxygen intake and lowered RPE (Elliott, 2007; Karageorghis, 1999; Karageorghis & Priest, 2008; Kravitz, 1994; Matesic & Cromartie, 2002). These effects are beneficial, especially as they may allow individuals to exercise harder and longer. The purpose of this study is to discover whether there is a relationship between RPE and music genre during exercise, and what that relationship is.--P. 1.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of music on heart rate response, blood pressure response, oxygen uptake, duration, and perceived exertion of subjects during three submaximal exercise tests. A music stimulus (fast tempo and slow tempo) was implemented during two of the tests. The third test had no music stimulant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of music on time to exhaustion and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) for males and females. The subjects were 14 male (x age=20.4 + 1.9yr; x ht=173.8 + 8.5cm; x wt=78.5 + 12. Skg) and 12 female (x age=19.3 + 2.3yr; x ht=163.8 + 6.0cm; x wt=60.0 + 6.8kg) Springfield College students. Subjects cycled at 70 rpm at a predetermined workload until they were unable to maintain the cycling speed for a consecutive 15 second period. Heart rate and RPE were recorded every 3 min. Subjects were tested under two conditions, with music and without. Order of testing condition was randomly assigned. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant increase in time to exhaustion for males and females during the music condition. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that the males endured longer than females during both conditions. A second ANOVA showed significantly lower 3 min RPE values for males as compared to females, but no difference between the music and no music conditions. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that lower 3 min RPE values for males occurred in both conditions. Final RPE means did not differ between condition or gender. We concluded that listening to music while exercising prolongs a subject's time to exhaustion. While subjects rated their final RPE similarly with or without music, they cycled twice as long during the music condition and achieved their final RPE at a later time. The use of music is recommended as an aid in rehabilitation settings to enhance subject motivation and endurance performance.

Download or read book Recovery from Strenuous Exercise written by Steve Bedford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coaches, managers and athletes frequently ask about how they can recover as fast as possible from fatigue and improve subsequent performance. Recovery from Strenuous Exercise informs students, athletes and practicing strength and conditioning coaches and performance therapists on how to use the latest scientific evidence to inform their recovery practice – particularly during high training volumes and competitive cycles. This book empowers the athlete, the coach and the therapist by giving them greater confidence, improving their critical thinking, helping them to avoid poor practice and enhancing their understanding of what causes fatigue and how its effects can be minimised. Recovery from Strenuous Exercise covers many of the aspects required to make a highly skilled, confident, knowledgeable personal trainer, sports therapist or strength and conditioning coach. It also acts as a recovery ‘go-to’ guide for competitive recreational athletes who lack the knowledge and guidance on optimal recovery protocols used by their professional peers. This text serves as a learning and research aid for athletes and those studying vocational personal training and sports therapy courses, and those studying other courses where recovery modalities form part of their undergraduate and postgraduate study, such as strength and conditioning, sports science, sports therapy, sports rehabilitation, osteopathy and physiotherapy.
