Book The Effects of Split Nitrogen Application and Weather on the Profitability and Environmental Performance of Ontario Corn Production

Download or read book The Effects of Split Nitrogen Application and Weather on the Profitability and Environmental Performance of Ontario Corn Production written by TASMIA. KABIR and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is a ubiquitous management practice in conventional corn production in developed countries. Splitting N application timing strongly influences N losses and yield response. While the environmental and yield performance of split N application has been studied, the profitability is unknown. This thesis investigated the agronomic, environmental, and economic performance of such practice compared with traditional methods under alternative weather scenarios in Elora, Ontario. The DeNritrification and DeComposition (DNDC) was used to predict yield and N losses, and the profitability was determined through an enterprise budget. The results show that split application is environmentally viable under all weather scenarios, agronomically and economically viable under alternative weather scenarios. Adjusting the N rate generates higher benefits than adopting a single rate split or pre-plant application. This thesis implies that management practice has significant impacts on corn production's agronomic, economic, and environmental performance under alternative weather conditions.

Book Residual Effects of Fall and Spring applied Nitrogen Fertilizers on Crop Yields in the Southeastern United States

Download or read book Residual Effects of Fall and Spring applied Nitrogen Fertilizers on Crop Yields in the Southeastern United States written by Robert W. Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen fertilizer broadcast in November or December on widely different soils at seven locations in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi during 1955-59 was only 49 percent as effective as nitrogen fertilizer applied the following spring when measured by corn yields. In terms of nitrogen recovered, the relative effectiveness was 62 percent. There were no consistent differences among the five nitrogen sources applied in the fall as measured by corn yields, but nitrogen recovery tended to be lower from urea than from the other sources. Considerable residual effects of spring-applied nitrogen were found over a period of 16 months based on both yield and nitrogen uptake by the crops. Average uptakes of 25 and 34 pounds per acre of additional nitrogen were made by the second and third crops, respectively, from the 200-pound original application. This residual nitrogen produced average yield increases of 1,600 pounds of dry forage and 19 bushels of corn per acre. These results emphasize the economic importance of residual nitrogen and the need for soil test procedures for its estimation.

Book Placement Effects of Nitrogen Fertilizer for No till Corn

Download or read book Placement Effects of Nitrogen Fertilizer for No till Corn written by Mark John Glady and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placement of fertilizer nitrogen (N) is a critical issue during the production of corn in no-till systems, but the effects of placement vary with many site-specific factors. On-farm trials offer a new method for evaluating the effectiveness of alternative placements. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of using yield monitors in on-farm trials to compare the effectiveness of dribbled and injected N fertilizer solutions for production of corn in no-till systems. Strip-plot trials were conducted in 16-ha to 24-ha fields to compare dribbled and injected urea-ammonium-nitrate (UAN) solutions applied after crops had emerged in 2002 and 2003. The fertilizer was applied at three rates and two times to help evaluate the effects of placement, and end of season cornstalk nitrate concentrations were measured to help interpret yield response data. The solutions were applied at 56, 112, and 168 kg N ha−1 in six-row strips that were harvested as single swaths with a yield monitoring combine. Placement had statistically significant effects on yields at only one of the six site years studied. No placement effects were observed on cornstalk nitrate concentrations at any of the site years. The effect at this site was probably caused by an unusual lack of rainfall that delayed movement of the dribbled N into the soil. Based on means over the six site years, the benefits of injecting fertilizer were small in comparison to the added time and equipment costs associated with an injected treatment. On-farm trials using treated strips and yield monitors offer an effective way for corn producers within a region to evaluate alternative methods of applying fertilizer under conditions relevant to them.

Book Optimizing Nitrogen Management in Food and Energy Production and Environmental Protection

Download or read book Optimizing Nitrogen Management in Food and Energy Production and Environmental Protection written by J. Galloway and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of food and energy interfere with the natural nitrogen cycle of the earth. Many of these changes are beneficial, while others are detrimental to societies and the environment. The changing nature of nitrogen in the global environment crosses scientific disciplines, geographical boundaries and political divisions and challenges the creative minds of natural and social scientists, economists, engineers, business leaders and planners. The papers in this book give readers a panoramic view of the changing nature of reactive nitrogen in the global environment, enabling them to make better choices about nitrogen management in food production and consumption, energy production and use, and environmental protection.

Book Nitrogen in the Environment

Download or read book Nitrogen in the Environment written by J.L. Hatfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements for all life forms. In agricultural systems it is essential for the production of crops for feed, food, and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Nitrogen in the Environment provides a wholistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen. The scope of this book is diverse covering a range of topics and issues related to furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment at farm and national levels. Issues of nitrogen from its effects on crops and human nutrition to nitrogen in ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed to provide a broad view of the problem and support scientists, researchers, and engineers in formulating comprehensive solutions. - The only source which presents an international, wholistic perspective of the effects of nitrogen in the environment with worldwide mitigation practices - Provides details on how to improve the quality of the environment by analyzing the development of emerging technologies - Develops strategies to be used by soil scientists, agronomists, hydrologists, and geophysicists for broad scale improvement of nitrogen efficiency
