The book's central argument is that a preoccupation with the notion of 'comprehension' has led teachers to focus upon the product of listening, in the form of answers to questions, ignoring the listening process itself. The author provides an informed account of the psychological processes which make up the skill of listening, and analyses the characteristics of the speech signal from which listeners have to construct a message. Drawing upon this information, the book proposes a radical alternative to the comprehension approach and provides for intensive small-scale practice in aspects of listening that are perceptually or cognitively demanding for the learner. Listening in the Language Classroom was winner of the Ben Warren International Trust House Prize in 2008.

It will additionally elaborate different approaches and suggestions for foreign language teachers and their teaching. In recent years, the media have developed rapidly and in many ways. In the same way, there have been many changes in foreign language teaching. From voice recordings, radios to videos, the way teaching is organized has changed and is changing constantly. Ever since excerpts from a radio recording and voice recordings were introduced into foreign language teaching, they have been carefully selected by teachers and embedded, for example, in a task or exercise; learners listened attentively to the audio and tried to solve the task set. But how do you proceed with a video, which offers a visual and an auditive form of representation? Despite much research and knowledge, some questions about the relatively new medium of video remain unanswered. One of these questions is the usefulness of captioned videos.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this investigation is to examine the effects of listening comprehension on English Language Learners' (ELLs) writing performance while taking notes. A total of 30 ELLs were administered a questionnaire in order to find out the difficulties they face when taking notes. The results indicates that student face various difficulties when taking notes, citing speech rate and different range of accent as the main problems. It was concluded that during the note taking process students could perform better if they were exposed first to any teaching materials like a power point or a hand out to improve their understanding and to assist their note-taking. It was also recommend to teachers to encourage students to use various kind of note taking techniques such as diagrams, abbreviations, and symbols that can increase their note taking efficiency and improve their ability to record more information and to avoid incomplete or inaccurate notes.
