Book Facilitating the Generalization of Social Skills with Bibliotherapy and Positive Peer Reporting

Download or read book Facilitating the Generalization of Social Skills with Bibliotherapy and Positive Peer Reporting written by Angelina C. Krieger and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social competence is needed for interaction among peers, teachers, and families in order for children to be successful in school. Children enter school with various levels of social competence. Social skills training is an effective method for building social skills; however, many programs fail to generalize these skills across settings and time. This study investigated the effects of a social skills training intervention for first and second grade students with emotional and behavioral problems. The intervention blended direct instruction, role-plays, and children's literature, with peers supporting both the acquisition and generalization of the social skills through positive peer reporting (PPR) in other school settings. Results indicate that four students, with or at-risk for emotional and behavioral disorder, in the first and second grade, produced an increased rate of the acquisition and generalization of the skills, How to Follow Directions, How to Ignore Distractions, and How to Ask for Help across various settings with the support of the social skills instruction paired with PPR. This demonstrates that elements of bibliotherapy paired with positive peer reporting may be effective in increasing the acquisition and generalization of social skills across multiple settings.

Book Exploring the Effects of Social Skills Training on Social Skill Development on Student Behavior

Download or read book Exploring the Effects of Social Skills Training on Social Skill Development on Student Behavior written by Randy L. Seevers and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most children learn social skills from interaction with others--other children, family members, friends, and adults. Some children with disabilities need to learn social skills more directly. This may include the use of a specific curriculum and the use of individualized methods. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of social skills training on social skill development and on student behavior. It was hypothesized that using instructional strategies for teaching social skills such as modeling, role playing, positive reinforcement, practice/rehearsal, incidental teaching, prompting, and coaching would help students initiate and develop positive social relationships with others, cope effectively with the behavioral demands and expectations of specific settings, and appropriately communicate and assert one's needs, desires, and preferences. The eight children with special needs who were identified as at-risk for social adjustment problems showed a significant improvement following the intervention. (Contains 2 tables.).

Book The Effects of the ACCEPTS Social Skills Training on the Aggressive Behavior of Elementary grade 2 Students

Download or read book The Effects of the ACCEPTS Social Skills Training on the Aggressive Behavior of Elementary grade 2 Students written by Pauline Haroutioun Nadjarian and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vast amount of research exists on the effect of social skills training on aggressive behavior. The current study investigated the effect of social skills training using the ACCEPTS program on the frequency of aggressive behavior of Grade 2 students in Eastwood College. Aggressive behavior was measured by the frequency recordings through behavioral observations during the pre-training and post-training phases for both the experimental (n=23) and the control (n=20) groups. The experimental group was the section of Grade 2 in Mansourieh campus, while the control group was the section of Grade 2 in the Kafarshima campus of Eastwood College.--An analysis of variance did not show significant differences between the experimental and control groups prior to the onset of the training. An analysis of variance showed significant differences in the post-training phase, thus showing a significant treatment effect. Moreover, teachers were asked questions about the quality of their students' social interactive behaviors. Teachers* descriptions were analyzed in terms of the trained social skills. Results were discussed and recommendations for future research were proposed.

Book Social Skills of Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Social Skills of Children and Adolescents written by Kenneth W. Merrell and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly yet highly readable and practical text systematically covers the importance, development, assessment, and treatment of social skills of children and adolescents. Combining scientific rigor with a highly approachable and readable style of writing to create a practical and unique book, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of the increasingly important topic of child and adolescent social skills. A wide variety of tables, figures, and practical step-by-step guides enhance the material presented, making it particularly useful for practitioners while offering an extensive array of recent research and models of interest to researchers. The authors present a solid foundation of scientific knowledge written in a manner accessible to nonscientists and having ample practical implications and examples for educational and clinical practice. The book is divided into two parts--the first features a foundation for conceptualizing and assessing child and adolescent social skills, whereas the second focuses on the arena of intervention. An up-to-date and unique addition to the literature, this volume will be of interest to professionals who work with or study children across several disciplines including school and clinical child psychology, special education, counseling, and social work. Although many books and other professional materials on the social competence of children and adolescents are presently available, the knowledge regarding these social skills is expanding rapidly, and there is a tremendous need to keep it current. This book helps meet this need by not only synthesizing a great deal of recent work in the field, but also by providing new information and evidence that has not yet been published. It also bridges an important gap that sometimes exists between research and practice. For instance, some books on child and adolescent social skills are clearly written for the academician or researcher, and may have little apparent application for the clinician or practitioner. Other materials are written as practical assessment or intervention guides for the clinician/practitioner, yet sometimes lack supporting evidence and rationale. This book is aimed at both arenas.

Book Examining Effects of Targeted Group Social Skills Intervention in Schools with and Without School Wide Systems of Positive Behavior Support

Download or read book Examining Effects of Targeted Group Social Skills Intervention in Schools with and Without School Wide Systems of Positive Behavior Support written by Lisa J. Powers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine (a) the effects of a small group targeted intervention to promote generalized social skill use among students at-risk due to high rates of problem behavior and (b) the impact school wide systems of Positive Behavior support (PBS) has on promoting maintenance and generalization compared to traditional school structures. A multi-component social skills training package was implemented in a PBS and non-PBS school. A total of nineteen students participated in 16 weeks of social skills instruction with reinforcement and self-management strategies. Student outcomes from direct observation in the training setting, classroom, and on the playground were compared across schools. In addition, questionnaires were completed by the social skills instructors, teaching staff, classroom teachers of student participants, target students and their parents. Findings resulted in two major conclusions. First, results provide evidence that social skills training combined with behavioral strategies can be an efficient and effective intervention for addressing problem behaviors in schools Overall, data from this study indicate acquisition of social skills as a result of direct instruction. Second, student gains in acquisition and generalization of social skills was greater in the PBS school than in the non-PBS school. Students in school wide systems of support who participated in the social skills training may receive greater benefits than students in the schools without school wide systems of PBS. Differences were also noted in the perceptions of key stakeholders in the two schools. The stakeholders in the PBS school reported high interest in sustaining and maintaining the social skills training as opposed to the staff in the non-PBS school, who did not express interest in continuing the group. Small group targeted interventions may be beneficial for schools to include as one part of a continuum of support for students who do not respond to universal social skills instruction as part of a school wide system of PBS. Implications for application and future research are also discussed.
