Book Examining the Association Between Sleep Duration Diet and Body Mass Index in Quebec Children

Download or read book Examining the Association Between Sleep Duration Diet and Body Mass Index in Quebec Children written by Fabiola E. Tatone-Tokuda and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of obesity in young children is increasing. Sleep duration is suggested to affect the regulation of body weight through changes in metabolic hormones that regulate appetite, food selection, and energy expenditure. Using data obtained from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, this study prospectively examined: 1) the association between longitudinal sleep duration pattern (LSDP) (age 2.5 to 6 years) and overweight/obesity at age 6 and 7 years; and, 2) whether such an association may be mediated by dietary intake and/or eating behaviour at the population level. Associations were examined using multivariate logistic regression methods, with adjustments for potential confounders. Boys with a 'short persistent or short increasing ' LSDP had significantly greater odds of being overweight/obese at age 6 and 7 years, in comparison to boys with an '11-hour persistent ' LSDP. This association was partially mediated by problematic eating behaviours. LSDP did not associate with overweight/obesity in girls.

Despite this, very little attention has been paid to understanding both normal sleep and sleep-related abnormalities during child development. There are profound changes in sleep and circadian rhythm during growth and maturation. Sleep is particularly important in children, due to

Book Effects of Energy and Nutrient Intakes on Growth Rate and Obesity Prevalence in a Selected Group of Lebanese Children

Download or read book Effects of Energy and Nutrient Intakes on Growth Rate and Obesity Prevalence in a Selected Group of Lebanese Children written by Sahar Z. Ammar and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy consumption and nutrients intakes are suggested to have an effect on the development of obesity. This study was conducted to investigate this hypothesis. A random sample of mothers of 122 female (F) and 171 male (M) Lebanese children (2-11 years of age) were selected and interviewed through a questionnaire about their children's medical and dietary histories. A 2-day food record was included in the questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements (taken twice on each subject within 30+1 day duration) of the children included: weight (wt), height (ht), skinfold thicknesses (ST) at triceps (TST), biceps (BST), subscapular (SST) and abdomen (AST), wrist and ankle circumferences, shoulders' length and elbow breadth. The change (A) in these parameters over one month period was correlated with energy, protein, certain vitamins and minerals intakes. The means, at yearly intervals (of age) of wt, ht, TST and SST were plotted on respective curves of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Daily energy and protein intakes were far more higher than estimated needs of children in either sex for all age-groups (2-12 years). The daily energy and protein intakes were significantly correlated with Awt in certain age-groups but not in others for either sex. Daily intakes of vitamins A and D, folacin, iodine and zinc were less than 67% of RDA in most of the children of either sex. For F, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin and for M, thiamin and riboflavin intakes were adequate. The intake of vitamin C was inadequate in one-third of M children in the 2-4 and>10-12 years and that of iron was inadequate in nearly one-third of M children in the>8-12 years of age. The AWt was significantly correlated with a in skinfold thicknesses taken on various body sites in F of all ages but not in M. The awt was also significantly correlated with ABMI (body mass index) in children of either sex and in all age-groups. The growth curves, based on wt, ht, TST and SST for age, showed that the majority of M children were rather tall and obese while the majority of F children were having average ht and were neither obese nor slim. It can be concluded from this study that this cohort of Lebanese children, though not representative of the population at large, is having low intakes of several vitamins and minerals, very high intakes of energy and protein and although their rate of growth is satisfactory, yet obesity was prevalent in the majority of M but hardly observed in F.

Book Association Between Sleeping Hours and Obesity in Employees of Several Lebanese Hospitals in North Lebanon

Download or read book Association Between Sleeping Hours and Obesity in Employees of Several Lebanese Hospitals in North Lebanon written by Nadine Raffoul and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity, a chronic disease with multiple etiologies, has become an epidemic disease affecting children and adults. Over the last twenty years, the prevalence of obesity has doubled despite all the programs implemented to prevent and treat obesity and its comorbidities. Simultaneously, the problem of sleep disturbances is growing surprisingly and it has become the most complaints physicians encounter nowadays. Thus the objective of this study is to find out if short sleeping hours are related to obesity or not in a sample of the Lebanese population living in North Lebanon and working in several hospitals. Furthermore, the secondary objective of this study is to determine if participants working during the night are at high risk of developing obesity. One hundred and eighteen employees participated voluntarily during summer season in the study and after collecting and analyzing the data, the results showed an association between sleeping hours and body mass index (BMI) (p=0.040.05) with high prevalence of obesity and overweight in groups sleeping less or equal than seven hours per 24 hours. However, no association was found between work pattern and BMI, thus, participants working during the night did not have a higher risk of developing obesity than participants working during the day (p=0.1050.05). In addition, short sleeping hours contributes to obesity by several pathways. For instance, an association was found between short sleeping hours and consumption of vegetable (p=0.029

Book Is Academic Performance Correlated with Physical Performance and Daily Habits of Pre adolescent Students in North Lebanon

Download or read book Is Academic Performance Correlated with Physical Performance and Daily Habits of Pre adolescent Students in North Lebanon written by Maya El Masri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research aim: The aim of this research was to study the correlation between academic performance with physical performances and daily habits in pre-adolescent students in North Lebanon. Methods: This study has been conducted during the spring 2019 semester, in North Lebanon, at Minyeh Al-Arz Educational Compound. 187 students, of grades 2 and 3 French and English departments has been involved in this study. Children were asked to fill a questionnaire about their daily habits, and passed some physical and one cognition test. General average was collected from the schools administration for each child. Results: The main findings of this study are that PA and academic performance are correlated. Also BMI and aerobic capacity has been shown to contribute to the enhancement of academic achievements. Nevertheless, sleeping hours, and screen time seem also to effect academic performance and PA performances and level. Conclusion: In this group of 187 children aged between 8 and 9 years old, physical activity, and different daily habits are correlated with academic performance, yet certain measures should be taken into account to stimulate the positive correlation.
