Book The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance written by Blake W. Corson and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of a 10-foot-diameter three-blade Curtiss 89301-15 propeller with Clark Y blade sections have been conducted in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel in order to determine the effect of simulated iceon the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller. The irregular coat of cement and fabric was used on the blades to simulate in outline and thickness a formation of glaze ice that might be formed in flight. The propellers were tested on a new 2000-horsepower dynamometer, a brief description of which is included. All tests were made at a rotational speed of 1800 rpm for blade angles of 20, 25, 35, and 40 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 120 to 420 miles per hour. The results are representative of full-scale constant-speed propeller operation.

Book The Effect of Ice Formations on Propeller Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Ice Formations on Propeller Performance written by Carr B. Neel and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements made in natural icing conditions of propeller efficiency loss due to the accretion of ice on the blades are supplemented by an analysis to establish the magnitude of efficiency losses to be anticipated during flight in icing conditions. Agreement in the order to magnitude of efficiency losses to be expected is obtained between measured and analytical results. The results indicate that, in general, efficiency losses can be expected to be less than 10 percent; whereas maximum losses, which will be encountered only rarely, may be as high as 15 to 20 percent.

Book Investigation of the Effect of a Tip Modification and Thermal De icing Air Flow on Propeller Performance

Download or read book Investigation of the Effect of a Tip Modification and Thermal De icing Air Flow on Propeller Performance written by Blake W. Corson and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic tests of a 12.208-foot-diameter two-blade hollow steel propeller before and after alteration for thermal de-icing have been made in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel to determine the effect of the alterations on propeller efficiency. The propeller, which had Clark Y blade sections, was tested on a 2000-horsepower dynamometer at blade angles ranging from about 25 degrees to 60 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 100 to 425 miles per hour.

Book Tank Tests to Determine the Effect of Varying Design Parameters of Planing tail Hulls

Download or read book Tank Tests to Determine the Effect of Varying Design Parameters of Planing tail Hulls written by John R. Dawson and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of a series of tests made in Langley tank no. 2 to determine the effect of varying design parameters of planing-tail hulls is presented. Results are given to show the effects on resistance characteristics of varying angle of afterbody keel, depth of step, and length of afterbody chine. The effect of varying the gross load is shown for one configuration. The resistance characteristics of planing-tail hulls are compared withthose of a conventional flying-boat hull. The forces on the forebody and afterbody of one configuration are compared with the forces on a conventional hull.

Book Effects of Ice Blockage Size and Proximity on Propeller Performance During Non contact Propeller ice Interaction

Download or read book Effects of Ice Blockage Size and Proximity on Propeller Performance During Non contact Propeller ice Interaction written by Luksa Luznik and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A series of tests on a model of the ice class fixed pitch propeller of the Canadian Coast Guard's R-Class icebreakers were conducted in the towing tank at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Performance of the propeller was assessed in both uniform flow and in blocked flow behind a nearby simulated ice piece for two blockage configurations and a range of clearances between the block and the propeller blades. Measurements of thrust and torque were made over a range of speeds. The results help to isolate the separate effects of the extreme wake within which the propeller operates, and of proximity of the ice piece. The work forms part of a broader research effort examining the performance of propellers when blocked with ice"--Leaf [1].

Book Dynamometer stand Investigation of the Muffler Used in the Demonstration of Light airplane Noise Reduction

Download or read book Dynamometer stand Investigation of the Muffler Used in the Demonstration of Light airplane Noise Reduction written by K. R. Czarnecki and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attenuation characteristics of the muffler used in the demonstration of light airplane noise reduction were investigated on the ground dynamometer stand at the Langley full-scale tunnel. Sound, back pressure, and engine power output were measured. The ground tests indicated that a reduction of 10 to 15 decibels was to be expected from this muffler.

Book An Evalution of Some Approximate Methods of Computing Landing Stresses in Aircraft

Download or read book An Evalution of Some Approximate Methods of Computing Landing Stresses in Aircraft written by Elbridge Z. Stowell and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landing of a simplified airplane structure, consisting of a uniform beam for the wings, a concentrated mass for the fuselage, and a linear spring for the landing gear, is analyzed exactly and is compared with several approximate solutions. The approximate solutions which neglect elasticity in the determination of landing-gear reaction but consider elasticity in computations of stresses give results of good accuracy and indicate that drop tests in which rigid masses are used may be a satisfactory approach to the landing problem.
