Book Learning and Short term Retention of Paired Associates in Relation to Specific Sequences of Interpresentation Intervals

Download or read book Learning and Short term Retention of Paired Associates in Relation to Specific Sequences of Interpresentation Intervals written by Robert A. Bjork and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation reports a study of short-term retention in paired-associate list learning. One purpose of the study was to ascertain empirically the extent to which short-term memory influences performance during the acquisition of a list of paired associates; a second was to gather evidence with respect to the conceptual relationship of short-term memory and learning. The particular experimental behavior chosen for study was the learning of a list of paired associates by means of a series of anticipation trials. An anticipation trial starts with the presentation of a stimulus to which the subject attempts to anticipate the correct response and ends with a presentation of the correct response. During an experimental session, the trials on any one item (presentation sequence) are characterized by a sequence of interpresentation intervals; that is, any two successive presentations of an item are separated by some number of trials on other items. The experimental design modified the standard anticipation procedure in two ways. (1) The series of trials was generated by a computer-implemented algorithm designed to yield a uniform distribution of interpresentation intervals. (2) All subjects had the same series of trials in the sense that each had the same set of presentation sequences. The confounding of item differences with the effects of the presentation sequences was avoided by counterbalancing across subjects the assignment of items to presentation sequences. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To present a timely analysis applying the rich resources of the current cognitive revolution, the contributors to this volume emphasize symbiotic interactions between theoretical/laboratory and applied/real-life approaches. A direct result of a symposium on general experimental psychology held during the International Congress of Applied Psychology (ICAP) in Kyoto, this volume includes papers focusing on topics in cognitive psychology that can be applied to school, business/industry, and daily life. The 20 contributors to ICAP represent not only a uniformly high level of excellence, but also a unique collection of talent from five nations: Canada, England, France, Japan, and the United States. This combined intelligence offers critical analyses of cognitive approaches to enhancing work efficiency, educating the labor force, coping with anxiety, improving mental hygiene, understanding the aging population, and exploring aesthetics in music.

Book Human Learning and Memory

Download or read book Human Learning and Memory written by Chizuko Izawa and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text celebrates the fourth Tsukuba International Conference on Memory (Tic4) held in January of 2003, by setting forth productive directions for memory researchers and human learning theorists around the world. It presents fascinating perspectives on progress, and future prospects for models, theories, and hypotheses authors developed, including several new, never published experimental results. Contributors include the winner of the 1997 U.S. Congressional Medal of Science--William K. Estes--who graced the text by penning the forward. The three full day presentations of Tic4 included presentations by 225 experts, represented by 73 universities from countries on four continents: Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Human Learning and Memory presents 11 chapters by invited speakers, and its appendices include titles of all papers accepted for Tic4 presentations, as well as a background introduction to Japanese cultures, relevant to Tic4 experiences. This book appeals to scholars, researchers, and teachers in the fields of human learning and memory, cognition, language learning, and educational psychology (theoretical, empirical, and applied dimensions). It can also be used as a textbook for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in these domains, either as required or recommended reading.

Book Experimental Psychology Cognition and Human Aging

Download or read book Experimental Psychology Cognition and Human Aging written by Donald H. Kausler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major revision and extension of my earlier book, Experimental Psychology and Human Aging, which appeared in 1982. The intervening years have seen a remarkable expansion of psychological research on human aging, especially on topics dealing with cognition. They have also seen research on cognitive aging gain increasing importance within the mainstream of basic cognitive research. As my lecture notes for my course in the psychology of aging grew, so did my apprehension regarding the task ahead of me in revis ing the first edition. The research explosion in cognitive aging forced several major changes in content from the first to the second edition. Two chapters on learning and memory in the first edition were necessarily expanded to six chapters in the present edition. Similarly, the single prior chapter on percep tion and attention became two chapters, as did the single prior chapter on thinking. Another change from the first edition is in the addition of some review of the effects of abnormal aging on various cognitive processes, parti cularly in regard to memory functioning. To keep the revision within reason able length, some sacrifices had to be made. The multiple chapters on metho dology and theory in the first edition were condensed into the present, single chapter. However, the major topics from the first edition were retained and, in fact, added to by the inclusion of important topics and issues that emerged over the past eight years.

Book Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes

Download or read book Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes written by W. Estes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 2214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible at present to identify a core cluster of theoretical ideas, concepts, and methods with which everyone working in the area of learning and cognition needs to be familiar? Would it be possible to make explicit the relationships that we feel do or must exist among the various subspecialties, ranging from conditioning through perceptual learning and memory to psycholinguistics, and to present these in a sufficiently organized way to help specialists and non-specialists alike in relating particular lines of research to the broader spectrum of activity? These questions were posed to a substantial number of investigators who were most active in developing the ideas and doing the research in the early 1970s. Originally published between 1975 and 1978, their response constitutes this 6-volume Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes. The volumes survey the research and theory on learning and cognitive processes that were rapidly developing at the time. The primary orientation was to concentrate on research and models aimed toward the development of general cognitive theory. They were up-to-date with regard to theoretical and technical developments, and sufficiently self-contained to be readable by anyone with a reasonable scientific background, regardless of their acquaintance with the technical jargon of particular specialties. Previously out of print, the Handbook is now available again, as a set or as individual volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: "Is it possible at present to identify a core cluster of theoretical ideas, concepts, and methods with which everyone working in the area of learning and cognition needs to be familiar? Would it be possible to make explicit the relationships that we feel do or must exist among the various subspecialties, ranging from conditioning through perceptual learning and memory to psycholinguistics, and to present these in a sufficiently organized way to help specialists and non-specialists alike in relating particular lines of research to the broader spectrum of activity? These questions were posed to a substantial number of investigators who are currently most active in developing the ideas and doing the research. Their response constitutes this Handbook..." First published in 1975, Volume 1 of this Handbook attempts to present an overview of the field and to introduce the principal theoretical and methodological issues that will persistently recur in the expanded treatments of specific research areas that comprise the later volumes. Deferring to the current Zeitgeist rather than to chronology, they begin with the present state of cognitive psychology, then introduce the comparative approach, and conclude this volume with a rapid, three-chapter review of the evolution of ideas from conditioning to information processing.

Book Short term working Memory

Download or read book Short term working Memory written by Ian Neath and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of the International Journal of Psychology had its origins in the Quebec 98 Conference on Short-Term Memory, held in Quebec City, Canada, in June 1998. Following this conference, participants were invited to submit contributions based on, and expanding upon, their presentation at this conference. The enthusiastic response made it possible to collect the exciting selection of articles that you will find herein. It must be noted that because of the finite journal space available, the editors and reviewers were faced with the difficult problem of selecting only a limited number of the excellent articles that were submitted. The outcome of this process is this special issue, which we believe provides an up-to-date overview of current research on short-term/working memory, including the challenges, controversies, and recent theoretical advances in this field.
