Book The Effect of O2 H2o and N2 on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of an Alpha Beta Titanium Alloy at 24 C and 177 C

Download or read book The Effect of O2 H2o and N2 on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of an Alpha Beta Titanium Alloy at 24 C and 177 C written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To study the effects of atmospheric species on the fatigue crack growth behavior of an a+B titanium alloy (Ti 6-2-2-2-2) at room temperature and 177 C, fatigue tests were performed in laboratory air, ultrahigh vacuum, and high purity water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen and helium at various partial pressures. Accelerated fatigue crack growth rates in laboratory air compared to ultrahigh vacuum are linked to the damaging effects of both water vapor and oxygen. Observations of the fatigue crack growth behavior in ultrahigh purity environments, along with surface film analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), suggest that multiple crack-tip processes govern the damaging effects of air. Three possible mechanisms are proposed: 1) at low pressure (less than 10(exp -1) Pa), accelerated da/dN is likely due to monolayer adsorption on crack-tip surfaces presumably resulting in decreased bond strengths at the fatigue crack tip, 2) for pressures greater than 10(exp -1) Pa, accelerated da/dN in oxygen may result from oxidation at the crack tip limiting reversible slip, and 3) in water vapor, absorption of atomic hydrogen at the reactive crack tip resulting in process zone embrittlement.Smith, Stephen W. and Piascik, Robert S.Langley Research CenterFATIGUE TESTS; FATIGUE (MATERIALS); CRACK PROPAGATION; TITANIUM ALLOYS; EMBRITTLEMENT; ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION; X RAY SPECTROSCOPY; WATER VAPOR; ULTRAHIGH VACUUM; PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of delay, retardation in the rate of fatigue crack growth, produced by load interactions in variable amplitude loading, on the accurate prediction of fatigue lives of engineering structures is discussed. The effects of a broad range of loading variables on delay in fatigue crack growth at room temperature are examined for a mill annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The results are used to estimate crack growth behavior under programmed loads.

Book Titanium

Download or read book Titanium written by Matthew J. Donachie and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2000 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to support the need of engineering, management, and other professionals for information on titanium by providing an overview of the major topics, this book provides a concise summary of the most useful information required to understand titanium and its alloys. The author provides a review of the significant features of the metallurgy and application of titanium and its alloys. All technical aspects of the use of titanium are covered, with sufficient metals property data for most users. Because of its unique density, corrosion resistance, and relative strength advantages over competing materials such as aluminum, steels, and superalloys, titanium has found a niche in many industries. Much of this use has occurred through military research, and subsequent applications in aircraft, of gas turbine engines, although more recent use features replacement joints, golf clubs, and bicycles.Contents include: A primer on titanium and its alloys, Introduction to selection of titanium alloys, Understanding titanium's metallurgy and mill products, Forging and forming, Castings, Powder metallurgy, Heat treating, Joining technology and practice, Machining, Cleaning and finishing, Structure/processing/property relationships, Corrosion resistance, Advanced alloys and future directions, Appendices: Summary table of titanium alloys, Titanium alloy datasheets, Cross-reference to titanium alloys, Listing of selected specification and standardization organizations, Selected manufacturers, suppliers, services, Corrosion data, Machining data.

Book Fretting Fatigue Behavior of the Titanium Alloy Ti 6AL 4V Under Seawater Conditions

Download or read book Fretting Fatigue Behavior of the Titanium Alloy Ti 6AL 4V Under Seawater Conditions written by Lewis C. Lietch and published by . This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6A1-4V was investigated in laboratory air and under a controlled environment consisting of synthetic seawater. Fretting fatigue tests were performed for both low and high cycle fatigue regimes. Finite element analysis was utilized to model and analyze the experimental data. The applied stress range and the Modified Shear Stress Range were evaluated as potential fatigue parameters. The results found from this study can be summarized as: (1) seawater had a deleterious effect on fretting fatigue life in the low cycle fatigue regime but improved life in the high cycle fatigue regime, (2) although the Q/P ratio for both conditions increased with an increasing applied stress, the difference between the two conditions was negligible, (3) debris from dry samples contained titanium and oxides while the debris from seawater samples contained titanium, oxides, and seawater contaminants, (4) fretting scar volume was larger under seawater conditions than dry conditions, (5) there were more, closely spaced striations on the fracture surface of the dry samples than of the seawater samples, and (6) both the applied (far field) stress range and the Modified Shear Stress Range can potentially be used as conservative fretting fatigue parameters under high cycle fatigue conditions.

Book Short crack Growth Behaviour in Various Aircraft Materials

Download or read book Short crack Growth Behaviour in Various Aircraft Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AGARD Report R-732 reviews the results of the first phase of an AGARD Cooperative Test Programme on the behaviour and growth of "short" fatigue cracks. That report describes the establishment of a common test method, means of data collection/analysis and crack growth modelling in an aircraft alloy AA2024-T3. The second and concluding phase of this Programme allowed participants to test various materials and loading conditions. The results of this second phase are described in this report. All materials exhibited a "short-crack" effect to some extent. The effect was much less evident in 4340 steel than in the other materials. For the aluminium, aluminium-lithium and titanium alloys, short cracks grew at stress-intensity factor ranges lower, in some cases much lower, than the thresholds obtained from long crack tests. Several laboratories used the same crack growth model to analyze the growth of short cracks. Reasonable agreement was found between measured and predicted short-crack growth rates and fatigue lives.
