Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of neutron exposure to 3.0 x 1018 neutrons/cm2 on the mechanical properties of thorium and thorium-carbon alloy are described. Tensile measurements were done at six different test temperatures from 4°K to 503°K and at two strain rates. Thorium and thorium-carbon alloy are shown to display typical radiation hardening like other face-centered cubic metals. The yield drop phenomenon of the thorium-carbon alloy is unchanged after irradiation. The variation of shear stress and effective shear stress with test temperature was fitted to Seeger's and Fleischer's equations for irradiated and unirradiated thorium and thorium-carbon alloy. Neutron irradiation apparently contributes an athermal component to the yield strength. However, some thermal component is detected in the low temperature range. Strain-rate parameter is increased and activation volume is decreased slightly for both kinds of metal after irradiation.

Book excerpt: Accelerator beam line components and spallation neutron targets operate in an irradiation environment where changes in mechanical properties can adversely affect component integrity. The present work presents a preliminary study of the effects of low fluences (1019 to 1020 p/cm2) of 800-MeV protons on the yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility of samples of 304 stainless steel, Alloy 718, molybdenum, and tantalum. Tensile samples (0.75 or 1.6 mm thick) were directly water cooled during irradiation and were tested at room temperature. For the 304 stainless steel and annealed Alloy 718, the yield strengths increased by about a factor of 3 and 1.6, respectively, while the ductility decreased ~30 and 40 percent. In the bee metals (tantalum and molybdenum) the yield strengths increased by at least a factor of 2. Tantalum samples retained significant ductility at room temperature, while several molybdenum specimens broke at less than 0.2 percent strain. These irradiation-induced changes at low proton fluences should not impair the usefulness of these materials (other than molybdenum) in accelerator environments.
