Book The Effects of Microstructural Features on the Response of Aluminum Alloys to Cyclic Deformation

Download or read book The Effects of Microstructural Features on the Response of Aluminum Alloys to Cyclic Deformation written by Edgar A Starke (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program has been designed to isolate and determine the various parameters which control the mechanical behavior during monotonic and cyclic loading of alloys containing various microstructural features developed during the decomposition of 7XXX type aluminum alloys. In addition, limited studies of the stress-corrosion resistance and corrosion-fatigue resistance has been made. The primary goal has been to understand the fundamentals of the deformation processes involved in monotonic and cyclic loading. The results obtained from this study should lead to improvements in the properties of existing alloy systems through control of the microstructure and suggest ways of developing fatigue resistant age-hardenable aluminum alloys. Book An Investigation of Quasi static Behavior High Cycle Fatigue and Final Fracture Behavior of Aluminum Alloy 2024 and Aluminum Alloy 2219

Download or read book An Investigation of Quasi static Behavior High Cycle Fatigue and Final Fracture Behavior of Aluminum Alloy 2024 and Aluminum Alloy 2219 written by Satish Vasudevan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fatigue is one of the very important factors that causes failure in structures used in aircraft construction. Prevention of fatigue failure has been of concern in the aircraft industry for many years. There have been developments to put forth new materials such as AA2024 and AA2219. Along with new materials, there has also been new fabrication processes, improved design concepts such as the inception of fruction stir welding (FSW). Considering the fact that aluminum is extensively used in the aircraft industry, this research study involves testing and analysis of two conventional aluminum alloys namely a friction stir welded aluminum alloy 2024-T8 and aluminum alloy 2219-T62 in simple tension and in cyclic fatigue. Uniaxial tensile tests and cyclic stress amplitude controlled fatigue tests were carried out on samples from both the materials at stress ratios of R=0.1 and R=0.3. The conjoint influence of weld parameter and intrinsic microstructural features on hardness, tensile response and high cycle fatigue response was studied. The microscopic mechanisms governing quasi-static fracture and high cycle fatigue fracture are rationalized in light of intrinsic microstructural features of the alloy, deformation characteristics of the alloy microstructure, and nature of loading. All the tests were carried out at room temperature at the University of Akron. This study will provide useful and usable information relevant to the fatigue behavior of the aluminum alloys chosen."--Abstract.

Book Effect of Plastic Deformation on Subsequent Decomposition in Aluminum Alloys Al Si and Al Mg Si

Download or read book Effect of Plastic Deformation on Subsequent Decomposition in Aluminum Alloys Al Si and Al Mg Si written by Nikolaĭ Nikolaevich Buĭnov and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of plastic deformation on subsequent decomposition in the alloys Al-Si (1.2 percent Si) and Al-Mg-Si (1.4 percent Mg2Si) was studied with an electron microscope. These alloys were chosen because the first is easily quenched and does not age at room temperature and because in the second no decomposition after quenching and natural aging is detected with the electron microscope (although the properties change). These alloys were chosen also because they could be studied by the oxide-film method. This method was used to study the surface of the samples, which was etched before deformation and aging. It is then possible to observe simultaneously, on the electron photographs, precipitation, the block structure, and those alterations (slip lines, bending of blocks, cracks, etc.) in the submicroscopic structure of the alloys which are caused by deformation.

Book The use of novel processing procedures for improving overall fatigue resistance of high strength aluminum alloys

Download or read book The use of novel processing procedures for improving overall fatigue resistance of high strength aluminum alloys written by E. A. Starke and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its objective is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms involved in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in metals in order to optimize the microstructure of high strength aluminum alloys for overall fatigue resistance. The research conducted during this year was divided into three tasks. Task I was concerned with the effects of slip character and grain size on the intrinsic material and extrinsic closure contributions to fatigue crack growth resistance of 7475. Special thermal mechanical processing procedures were developed to control the microstructural features of interest. Task II was concerned with the use of the cyclic stress strain curve and a damage model for predicting fatigue crack growth thresholds. Fatigue crack initiation and fatigue crack propagation both involve the concept of cyclic accumulated damage. The details of the damage structure can be related to a material's cyclic stress strain response (CSSR). Task III is concerned with the effect of ion implantation on the low cycle fatigue response of 7475. Since fatigue crack initiation is a surface phenomenon and fatigue crack propagation is a bulk phenomenon, the fatigue properties may be optimized by production processes that develop microstructures resistant to FCI on the surface, and microstructures resistant to FCP throughout the bulk.

Book Mechanical Behavior of Advanced Materials

Download or read book Mechanical Behavior of Advanced Materials written by Daniel C. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the fatigue and fracture of metallic materials. Nine of the 81 papers relate to designing against fatigue failure, fatigue damage mechanisms, crack growth, and fatigue life under various loading conditions. Many others look at micro-scale mechanics and laminate analysis. Overall they consider both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue studies; titanium, aluminum alloys, superalloys, and other high- strength steels; and applications for turbines, jet engines, and pressure vessels. Among the specific topics are predicting the fatigue life of an orthotropic 6061-aluminum under proportional and non- proportional loading, the structure and behavior of materials for a micromechanical device, shear deformation theories and their relationships to the classical theory, the numerical study of damage growth in particulate composites, and an information system for damage tolerance of polymer matrix composites. Book Effect of the Processing Conditions on the Microstructural Features and Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Effect of the Processing Conditions on the Microstructural Features and Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Alloys written by Tomasz Tański and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum and aluminum alloys are widely used for aircraft structures, where they are subjected to demanding conditions and where is an increased demand for weight reduction and fuel savings. Aluminum comprises 8% of the earth?s crust and is, therefore, the most abundant structural metal. Its production since 1965 has surpassed that of copper and now comes next to iron. This increased use of aluminum alloys leads to a need for deeper understanding of their mechanical properties and the impacts of processing parameters. The mechanical properties can determine by controlling the microstructures of the alloys. For example, precipitation hardening is the main strengthening mechanism improving the tensile and yield strength. Solute atoms, precipitates and dispersoids influences to the yield strength, since they act as distributed pinning points for mobile dislocations, thus increasing the shear stress required to move the dislocations. Another approach is the manipulation of a grain size that can be performed by alloying or plastic deformation processes. Therefore, the precise understanding of each mechanism that can influence the properties of aluminum and its alloys is very important. The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the influence of the processing history on the microstructure and mechanical properties.
