Book excerpt: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood psychological disorders with prevalence estimates ranging from 3%-7% (APA, 2000) and one of the most thoroughly studied child neurocognitive disorders. Children with ADHD have consistently shown executive functioning and processing speed deficits on a variety of measures (Berlin, Bohlin, Nyberg, & Janols, 2004; Geurts, Verté, Oosterlaan, Roeyers & Sergeant, 2004; Nigg, 1999; Nigg, Blaskey, Huang-Pollock & Rappley, 2002). The research on executive functioning deficits in other childhood disorders has been comparatively lacking. There is some research that suggests that internalizing disorders, such as anxiety and depression, can also have a detrimental effect on certain executive functioning domains (Airaksinen, Larsson, & Forsell, 2005; Christopher, & MacDonald, 2005; Emerson, Mollet, & Harrison, 2005). It is unclear how these internalizing symptoms will impact executive functioning, processing speed and fine motor control in children with ADHD. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the presence of internalizing symptoms impacts the ability of children with ADHD to perform executive functioning, processing speed, and fine motor control tasks. In order to assess this, the predictive ability of gender, ADHD subtype, parent ratings of anxiety, and parent ratings of depression were examined for processing speed, working memory, response inhibition, vigilance and fine motor control tasks. Gender was found to predict differences in working memory, response inhibition and fine motor control. ADHD subtype was found to predict differences in response inhibition. Parent ratings of anxiety were found to interact with ADHD subtype to predict some aspects of vigilance. Parent ratings of anxiety and of depression were found to predict differences in other aspects of vigilance looking across gender and subtype. Finally, teacher ratings of anxiety were found to predict differences in working memory.

Early, accurate diagnosis maximizes long-term positive outcomes for youth with ADHD. Tests of executive functioning (EF) are potential tools for screening and differential diagnoses for ADHD; however, previous research has been inconsistent regarding the specificity and magnitude of EF deficits across ADHD subtypes. Here we overcome these limitations by: (1) employing more rigorous methods to conceptualize ADHD in a way that better captures heterogeneity of expression, and (2) by applying a more comprehensive, reliable battery of EF tasks to this association. We tested 1548 children and adolescents (ages 7-15 years) from the Texas Twin Project, a population-based cohort with a diverse socioeconomic and ethnic composition. EF and processing speed were measured in-laboratory with a comprehensive test battery, while ADHD and sociodemographic characteristics were assessed via parent report. We show that EF deficits are isolated to the inattention domain of ADHD. Moreover, we found that the association between EF task performance and inattention remains stable across sociodemographic groups. Our results demonstrate that failures of executive control are selectively manifested as covert inattentive symptoms, such as trouble with organization, forgetfulness, and distractedness, rather than overt symptoms, such as inappropriate talkativeness and interruption. We anticipate that EF tests could be widely useful in clinical and educational settings due to their specificity regarding particular subtypes of ADHD behaviors and their broad predictive validity across key demographic subgroups

Book excerpt: Background/Purpose: ADHD is frequently associated with functional deficits across social, familial, and academic contexts (Pelham, 2005). Children with ADHD and internalizing symptoms typically experience higher levels of functional impairment compared to their counterparts with exclusively ADHD (Bishop et al., 2019). Positive parenting practices and child strengths have been found to play a protective role for children with ADHD (Healy et al., 2011; McCrimmon et al., 2018). This study aims to investigate the influence of internalizing symptoms on functional impairment for children with ADHD. Child strengths and parenting strengths have been examined to identify moderating effects of the aforementioned constructs. Methods: Data were collected in a community mental health centre using the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths questionnaire (CANS) and the Child Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). Participants included 209 children and their caregivers seeking mental health services between the ages of 5 and 11 with an ADHD diagnosis. To examine the moderating effects of parenting and child strengths, ordinary least squares regression models were tested using the PROCESS macro for SPSS (v3.5; Hayes, 2018). Results: Results suggest that levels of internalizing symptoms influence functional impairment in children with ADHD. Child strengths moderate the relationship between internalizing symptoms and functional impairment when internalizing symptoms are medium to high. Conclusion: Findings from this study demonstrate that facilitating child strengths can help moderate functional impairment for children who experience ADHD and internalizing symptoms.

Book excerpt: Although much research has been conducted regarding online learning and technology within the classroom, there has not been research conducted regarding its effects on children with executive dysfunction. Children with ADHD among other rising diagnosis suffer from executive dysfunction. Executive dysfunction being categorized as impairments in the brain's ability to organize, prioritize and activate work, focus, processing speed, working memory, and self-regulation. This study examines both students with ADHD and those without any special education diagnosis in both the online learning environment and the traditional in-class learning environment. Each student group's GPA data was collected and analyzed utilizing a correlation and regression to determine if a relationship exists between the online environment versus the traditional in-person environment. Additionally, the data was analyzed to determine what effect executive functioning abilities might have on GPA data in both environments. The participants in the study were in 7th grade for the online learning environment GPA data and 8th grade for the in-person learning environment GPA data. After analysis of the data using a correlation and regression, it was determined that there was a relationship between students' executive functioning needs and their performance in the virtual learning environment and the in-person learning environment. Additionally, a student's executive functioning abilities do influence their performance as measured by their GPA. It is recommended that both instructional strategies as well as instructional environment be seriously considered for students with executive dysfunction so that they can be put in a position in which they can be most successful. Further research should also be conducted for students in different disability categories as well as age groups. Lastly, further research to determine strategies that might be appropriate for students with executive dysfunction in the virtual environment.

There are several theoretical models defining and explaining the concept of Executive Functions. Most of these models consider that the term Executive Functions encompasses cognitive process as working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control and other complex functions as planning, problem-solving and abstract reasoning. Other models argue that motivational and emotional functions, such as affective decision-making, reside under the concept of Executive Function. Much evidence supports how complex cognitive functions are related to the physiological activity of brain networks, including the frontal cortex and its connections with subcortical structures. Several psychiatric disorders related to impairment in these brain networks (eg., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and drug addiction) leading to deficits in Executive Functions. These cognitive deficits affect patients’ everyday functioning, worsening the clinical course of the disease. For example, deficits in Executive Functions are related to suicide behavior in bipolar disorder patients. Furthermore, these deficits also relate to obesity, a lack of adherence to treatment and an underperformance in the workplace and educational settings. The understanding of the role of deficits in Executive Functions, including its neurobiological basis, developmental trajectories, and relationship with clinical outcomes, is fundamental to improve clinical management of psychiatric patients. This research topic includes 13 articles with interdisciplinary contributions related to the understanding of the deficits in Executive Functions and its relationship with clinical manifestations in psychiatric disorders.
