Book Evaluation of the Interfacial Mechanical Properties in Fiber reinforced Ceramic Composites

Download or read book Evaluation of the Interfacial Mechanical Properties in Fiber reinforced Ceramic Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the application of a micro-indentation technique to the measurement of interfacial properties in fiber reinforced ceramic composites. Specific fiber/matrix systems included SiC/glass, SiC/macro-defect-free (MDF) cement, SiC/SiC, and mullite/glass. The effect of fiber coatings upon the interfacial properties was also investigated. These properties, which included the debond strength, interfacial shear stress, and residual axial fiber stress, were evaluated by measuring the force-displacement curves generated during load-unload cycles. Estimates of these three stress values were obtained by matching the experimental force-displacement curves with data predicted from an existing model. In general the SiC/glass composites exhibited the lowest values of the interfacial shear and debond stresses. The sliding characteristics of the SiC/MDF cement and SiC/SiC composites were strongly influenced by the residual axial stress and the nature of the fiber coating. In the case of the mullite/glass composite, the high values of the interfacial shear and debond stresses reduced the measurement sensitivity, thereby increasing the uncertainty in the estimates of the interfacial properties. 17 refs, 6 figs, 1 tab.

Book Ceramic Fibers and Coatings

Download or read book Ceramic Fibers and Coatings written by Committee on Advanced Fibers for High-Temperature Ceramic Composites and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-05-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.

Book Interface Effects on the Mechanical Properties of Ceramic Composites

Download or read book Interface Effects on the Mechanical Properties of Ceramic Composites written by D. B. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroscopic and microscopic mechanical properties of ceramic composites have been investigated. A fracture mechanics analysis was developed to evaluate the influence of residual microstructural stresses on the fracture toughness of composites that are reinforced by crack bridging mechanisms. The magnitude and sign of the toughening were found to be very sensitive to the details of the bridging mechanism and the criterion for ligament rupture. These results highlight the need for techniques to measure microscopic mechanical properties such as residual stresses, interfacial debonding and sliding resistance, and deformation and fracture of small reinforcements. Further analysis of an indentation fiber pushing technique that was developed previously under this contract for measuring fiber-matrix interfacial properties has enabled the technique to be used to measure residual stresses in individual fibers and to measure frictional sliding resistance in carbon fiber composites.

Book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites written by Karl Jakus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-06-28 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Book Interfacial Phenomena in Composite Materials 91

Download or read book Interfacial Phenomena in Composite Materials 91 written by Ignaas Verpoest and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial Phenomena in Composite Materials '91 is a collection of papers dealing with the science of composite interfaces, with emphasis on theoretical modeling, test methods, and characterization methods of polymer matrix, metal, or ceramic matrix composites. One paper reviews the micromechanical test methods used in evaluating mechanical properties of fiber-matrix interface. Another paper shows that the critical fiber length cannot always be considered a material constant in the framework of load transfer models based on the shear lag theory. Microwave plasma treatment is a quick technology to change fiber surface structure as the oxidation or the roughening of the fiber increases fiber-matrix adhesion. Another paper evaluates the effect of improved adhesion on mechanical performance under static, dynamic, and impact conditions. It also examines the role of fiber anisotropy on the performance of high performance polyethylene/epoxy composites. By using the Laser Raman Spectroscopy, the investigator can analyze the effects of the fiber surface treatment, the fiber modulus, the curing temperature on the Shear strength, and the fracture mechanics of the interface. The collection can be read profitably by chemists, biochemists, and academicians involved in material compound research.
