Book Determinants and Consequences of Foreign Direct Investment FDI in Thailand

Download or read book Determinants and Consequences of Foreign Direct Investment FDI in Thailand written by Derrick Parker and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research analyzes the determinants and consequences of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Thailand, with particular emphasis on reviewing the Thai government's FDI policies, and these policies' effectiveness for enabling the country's sustainable development. Past research has indicated that, despite developing countries' various attempts to improve their economic growth and increase their standard of living via internationalization, many of these attempts have proven unsuccessful. In the case of Thailand, there is debate regarding how the government can influence and regulate FDI in a manner that is most beneficial to the country's long-term growth and development. It has long been recognized that Thailand's economic policies are determined in a political environment that is driven mainly by individuals' and groups' personal interest. Thus, research on the political process of policy formation is essential to predict future policy directions. This research takes a more concentrated approach by examining the effects of FDI on Thailand's economic growth in the context of the political economy. The main areas examined are: (i) whether FDI has had a positive effect on the Thai economy; (ii) in which sector FDI has been most productive; (iii) whether the Thai government has been successful in achieving improved economic growth through implementing its FDI policies; and (4) if not, which areas have reported failure, what possible alternative policies exist, and what the expectations are for Thailand's future. In assessing Thailand's performance, the research seeks to uncover if contributions of FDI to gross domestic product and employment growth varies across sectors. Generally, it is assumed there is room for improvement in all sectors, which can be validated by assessing the structural weaknesses in Thailand's financial system and determining if this has any impact on the country's infrastructure, education and health. It is thought that these measures will improve human capital, increase absorptive capacity, and thereby enhance the overall spill over effects of FDI.

Book The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Absorptive Capabilities on the Economic Growth of the Lao People s Democratic Republic Lao PDR

Download or read book The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Absorptive Capabilities on the Economic Growth of the Lao People s Democratic Republic Lao PDR written by Phouthakannha Nantharath and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on economic growth of Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) between 1993 and 2015. The investigation was based on the influence of growth and economic absorptive capability determinants such as human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality. In addition, empirical analysis was conducted in four neighboring economies of Lao PDR (Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and China) to identify the patterns of FDI and economic growth in the region based on their economic settings and trade relations. This research used a multivariate framework including capital stock, labor stock, FDI, human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality as regressors of the growth model. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test was used to determine the stationarity of variables; the Johansen Cointegration test was used to verify the cointegration and long-run relationships among variables; the unrestricted Vector Autoregressive model was used in estimating the significance of the causal linkages; and the Granger causality test was used to verify the direction of the casual links between dependent and independent variables. The empirical results showed positive effect of FDI on economic growth is complemented with trade openness in Lao PDR and is complemented with institutional quality in Vietnam. The negative effect of FDI on economic growth was complemented with negative effects of human capital and trade openness in Cambodia and complemented with trade openness and institutional quality in China. While FDI has negative effect on economic growth, human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality appeared to have positive effect on economic growth of Thailand. These results imply that Lao PDR and Vietnam share some similarities in benefiting from FDI inflows. Cambodia also shares similar pattern in benefiting from FDI inflows with China. Although this research found negative effect of FDI on the economic growth of Thailand, the positive effects of human capital, trade openness, and institutional quality make the economy of Thailand unique and different from those of other four countries. Ultimately, this research aimed to provide a direction for future economic development policy formulation and implementation through better understanding of the absorptive capability of Lao PDR economy and its attractiveness to FDI. The findings of this research confirm that trade openness is significant in attracting FDI and considered the first door to welcoming investors, while having a sufficient level of infrastructure, education, quality institutions, and transparency would ascertain investors of their profitability. Research results lend credence to the need for the government of Lao PDR to focus on improving its economic absorptive capability and economic competitiveness regionally and globally in a variety of ways including the use of better wealth and resource management strategies. As a resource-rich economy, failing to implement an effective wealth hand resource management strategies could lead to the Dutch Disease effects in the Lao PDR economy.

Book Foreign Direct Investments in Asia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investments in Asia written by Chalongphob Sussangkarn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers nine countries of ASEAN and the East Asian area, including major Asian countries, and compares their respective policies to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Through comparative study of FDI promotion policies, this book will give policy makers in the area of FDI promotion an overview and comparison of the FDI policies of other countries. In addition, researchers at graduate, post-graduate or professional level will gain from the econometric methodology and detailed definitions of various spillover effects (horizontal and vertical), which will be beneficial to their research. In addition to FDI policy comparison, this book focuses on the various spillover effects of FDI. It separates it into categories: own productivity effects; intra-industry spillover effects; and inter-industry spillover effects (forward and backward linkage effects). While most other studies have only taken econometric tests on own-productivity and intra-industry spillovers, a key advantage to this book is that it also covers the separate effects of inter-industry linkages. Through policy comparison and econometric tests on various spillover effects on economic growth, employment and exports, this book will give policy makers and researchers an innovative and constructive guide to FDI.
