Over the course of four weeks, the participant attended 55-minute sessions in which areas of reading comprehension, especially inference making, were assessed. She also received extensive modeling and guided practice in various comprehension strategies. Results for the study show that explicit instruction of prediction and inference making increases overall reading comprehension.

Book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies

Download or read book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies written by Susan M. Grabe and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to determine if explicit direct instruction of comprehension strategies, particularly in questioning, would improve students' reading comprehension, which in turn increase instructional reading levels. Participants were taught the comprehension strategy "questioning" through the process of direct modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. Data were collected throughout the duration of the study, and the effectiveness of explicit direct instruction of questioning was determined. Findings suggested that by explicitly teaching questioning as a comprehension strategy, students became more engaged with text and increased their instructional reading level. This study encouraged me to continue to implement best practices in teaching comprehension strategies to ensure the success of students at Prairie Ridge Elementary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Book The Efficacy of Explicit Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies to English Language Learners in Elementary School

Download or read book The Efficacy of Explicit Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies to English Language Learners in Elementary School written by Jilynn Christine Smith and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of explicitly teaching reading strategies to English language learners at the elementary level, specifically fourth grade. Two fourth grade classrooms, comprised of fifty-one Hispanic students who are classified as English language learners, were used in this study. One class was explicitly taught reading comprehension strategies for twenty minutes everyday while the other class did extensive reading and wrote reflections during the same twenty minute period of the day. Comparisons were made between the pretest and posttest scores as well as other assessments used in the classroom using t-tests. Results indicated that there was statistically significant improvement made by the treatment group on most assessments. The data demonstrated the efficacy of explicit instruction of reading comprehension strategies to English language learners in the fourth grade.

Book Comprehension Grades K 12

Download or read book Comprehension Grades K 12 written by Douglas Fisher and published by Corwin. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically change the way students learn from texts, extending beyond comprehension to critical reasoning and problem solving. Is your reading comprehension instruction just a pile of strategies? There is no evidence that teaching one strategy at a time, especially with pieces of text that require that readers use a variety of strategies to successfully negotiate meaning, is effective. And how can we extend comprehension beyond simple meaning? Bestselling authors Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and Nicole Law propose a new, comprehensive model of reading instruction that goes beyond teaching skills to fostering engagement and motivation. Using a structured, three-pronged approach—skill, will, and thrill—students learn to experience reading as a purposeful act and embrace struggle as a natural part of the reading process. Instruction occurs in three phases: Skill. Holistically developing skills and strategies necessary for students to comprehend text, such as monitoring, predicting, summarizing, questioning, and inferring. Will. Creating the mindsets, motivations, and habits, including goal setting and choice, necessary for students to engage fully with texts. Thrill. Fostering the thrill of comprehension, so that students share their thinking with others or use their knowledge for something else. Comprehension is the structured framework you need to empower students to comprehend text and take action in the world.

Book Effects of Explicit Reading Comprehension Strategy Instruction for English Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Effects of Explicit Reading Comprehension Strategy Instruction for English Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Sara L. Jozwik and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intervention study, I engaged principles of culturally responsive research to examine the effectiveness of explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction for English Learners (ELs) with specific learning disabilities (SLD). This study replicated and extended previous research (Jitendra, Hoppes, & Xin, 2000) by modifying instruction found to be effective for native English speakers (i.e., explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction with a self-monitoring procedure). Modifications included: (a) integrating culturally relevant text, (b) providing native language support, and (c) melding strategies from the fields of teaching English as a second language and special education. Through a co-teaching model, I provided instruction to four participants during a 135-min literacy block in a fifth-grade general education classroom for 13 weeks. A multiple probe across participants design (Gast & Ledford, 2010) evaluated effects of instruction on two dependent variables: (a) participants' sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies while reading, as measured by comprehension thinking strategy rubrics (Keene, 2006) and (b) participants' comprehension, as measured through percentage accuracy with responding to verbally-posed, researcher-developed literal and inferential comprehension questions. I assessed maintenance of effects for up to 8 weeks after participants exited the intervention. I assessed generalization to on-grade-level text and to a standardized achievement test (Woodcock Johnson Tests of Academic Achievement III-R; Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001). Additionally, I examined participants' self-efficacy as readers at pre- and postintervention by collecting information from the Motivation to Read Profile survey and interview (Gambrell, Palmer, Coddling, & Mazzoni, 1996). Finally, I measured participants' perceptions of the social acceptability of intervention procedures and outcomes through a researcher-developed, 9-item, Likert-scale survey. Results of this study show a functional relation for accuracy with answering literal and inferential comprehension questions and for sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies to read instructional-level text. All four participants performed within a similar range on on-grade-level probes as compared to instructional-level probes before and after the intervention. Participants improved or maintained scores on a standardized achievement test. Intervention effects maintained at the end of a 2- to 8-week period at a level above respective baseline performance. Moreover, participants' attitudes toward reading and their motivation toward reading increased or maintained at high levels. Results from social validation questionnaires showed favorable impressions of the intervention's procedures and outcomes. Findings are discussed with regard to the need for future research and the implications for practice.

Book The Effects of Explicit Instruction in Metacognitive Reading Strategies Using Graphic Organizers on the Comprehension of Intermediate Elementary Students

Download or read book The Effects of Explicit Instruction in Metacognitive Reading Strategies Using Graphic Organizers on the Comprehension of Intermediate Elementary Students written by Jody V. Folkedahl Eppolito and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study documents the effects of explicitly taught metacognitive reading strategies using graphic organizers and the effect on two intermediate elementary students. Students met with the researcher for individualized instruction focusing on comprehension and use of metacognition and self-monitoring while reading. The study gathered data from multiple sources including pre and post-testing from the Qualitative Reading Inventory 5 (Leslie & Caldwell, 2011), and researcher-created data records. Both of the subjects made significant gains in retell, vocabulary and comprehension, leading to an increased reading level. The use of graphic organizers to support metacognitive reading practice is a promising practice and has many applicable uses for the classroom. The results of this study indicate that explicit instruction on processes like self-monitoring for comprehension can increase comprehension of an instructional level non-fiction text.
