Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diet and Health examines the many complex issues concerning diet and its role in increasing or decreasing the risk of chronic disease. It proposes dietary recommendations for reducing the risk of the major diseases and causes of death today: atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (including heart attack and stroke), cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and dental caries.

Book The Effects of Exercise and Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplementation as Treatments for Hepatic Steatosis

Download or read book The Effects of Exercise and Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplementation as Treatments for Hepatic Steatosis written by Sarah Jean Borengasser and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and combined effects of exercise and dietary consumption of n3PUFAs as treatments for NAFLD. Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were studied due to their spontaneous development of obesity, insulin resistance, and NAFLD. A novelty of these rats is their intrinsic aptitude for voluntary wheel running despite their obesity. OLETFs were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=8/group): 1) remained sedentary 2) access to running wheels (3) diet supplemented with 3% of energy from fish oil and 4) access to running wheels and diet supplemented with 3% of energy from fish oil. Treatments began at 13 wk of age, an age when NAFLD is present in OLETF-SED rats, and lasted until all rats were sacrificed at 20 wk of age. Exercise appears to be more effective treatment for NAFLD in obese OLETF rats in part through increasing complete hepatic FAO, improving IS, and decreasing activation of the lipid synthesis pathway. Contrary to our original hypothesis, a diet moderately high in n3PUFAs failed to lower hepatic fat content and partially blunted the beneficial effects of exercise as a treatment strategy for NAFLD and systemic insulin resistance.

Book Effect of Dietary Omega 3 Fatty Acids on Blood Lipid Composition and the Inflammatory Response in the Cockatiel Nymphicus Hollandicus

Download or read book Effect of Dietary Omega 3 Fatty Acids on Blood Lipid Composition and the Inflammatory Response in the Cockatiel Nymphicus Hollandicus written by Cailin Rachel Heinze and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incorporation of dietary n-3 fatty acids into red blood cells (RBCs) and their effects on plasma lipids and the inflammatory response were examined. Cockatiels were fed a diet containing either 4% (w/w as fed) tallow, 3% fish oil + 1% tallow, or 3.5% flax oil + 0.5% tallow. RBC fatty acids, lipoproteins and plasma chemistry parameters were analyzed after 8-13 weeks on the diets. Inflammatory indices were measured after injection of lipopolysaccharide. Total cholesterol was lowest in the fish oil group; triglyceride concentrations were lower in the fish group than in the flax group. Total n-3 fatty acids, docosohexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were markedly higher in the RBCs of birds fed fish oil versus the other diets. Plasma mineral concentrations and heterophil:lymphocyte ratios were not affected by diet. Fish oil, but not flax oil, improved plasma lipid parameters and holds promise as a treatment for dyslipidemia.

Book Effects of Dietary Fish Oil Supplementation on the Skeletal Muscle Blood Flow Response to Submaximal Treadmill Exercise

Download or read book Effects of Dietary Fish Oil Supplementation on the Skeletal Muscle Blood Flow Response to Submaximal Treadmill Exercise written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) containing docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been demonstrated to produce advantageous effects on vascular function. Specifically, PUFA supplementation has resulted in enhanced brachial artery blood flow (Q), dilation, and vascular conductance (VC) during rhythmic handgrip exercise. The effects of fish oils (FO) on skeletal muscle blood flow (Qm) during dynamic whole body exercise, however, remain unknown. PURPOSE: To test our hypothesis that 6 weeks of dietary FO supplementation with DHA and EPA enhances regional Qm and VC to the hindlimb musculature during submaximal treadmill exercise. METHODS: Following 6 weeks of dietary supplementation with safflower oil (SO) (control; n = 9) or FO (n = 8), heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and Q[subscript]m to the hindlimb were measured at rest and during submaximal treadmill exercise (20 m/min, 10%, ~65% VO[subscript]2max) via radiolabeled microspheres in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. RESULTS: HR and MAP were not different between SO and FO at rest or exercise (P
