Book Communication and Problem Solving in Diverse Groups A Comparison of Electronic Meeting Systems Use in Dispersed and Face to Face Settings

Download or read book Communication and Problem Solving in Diverse Groups A Comparison of Electronic Meeting Systems Use in Dispersed and Face to Face Settings written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hybrid nature of an electronic meeting system (EMS)-as a communication medium and as a manager of diversity-offers organizations an excellent vehicle for improving group performance, handling stress, and building cohesive teams. This report describes a project that examined the performance and behavior of various decision making groups using an EMS in face-to-face and dispersed settings. Results of this study suggest that the proper task-technology-team fit is a critical factor in determining outcomes. In other words, homogeneous groups needing to discuss issues and resolve ambiguities may require face-to-face meetings, while diverse groups may be able to accomplish the same tasks in dispersed settings using an EMS. However, where the goal is information exchange and uncertainty reduction, lean media such as dispersed EMS may be used just as effectively as any other media by all groups, regardless of their degree of diversity.

Download or read book Media Choice written by Tilo Hartmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the next generation of research in media psychology, bridging selective exposure into a larger framework of choice in media usage. Considering the myriad media options available to use, this work seeks to answer such questions as: What mechanisms guide an individual's exposure to/choice of media? How can researchers model them? The questions why and how people decide to use media offerings are key in current communication scholarship. Research on selective exposure has addressed this area in the past, but the term 'media choice' is used here to represent any implicit/automatic/spontaneous or explicit/deliberate 'decisions' of the users and subsequent behavioral consequences that lead to a contact with a media stimulus.

Book Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology

Download or read book Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology written by Gary M. Olson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Science Foundation funded the first Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology initiative to look at systems that support collaborations in business and elsewhere. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. This initiative is motivated by three scientific issues which have been the focus of separate research efforts, but which may benefit from collaborative research. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.

Book Information Systems and Technology in the International Office of the Future

Download or read book Information Systems and Technology in the International Office of the Future written by Bernard Glasson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization of business, internationalization of trade, and increasing prevalence of multi-cultural interdisciplinary teams are beginning to redefine the nature of office work. Different-time/different-place/different-culture teams will become the norm. Same-time/same-place/same-culture teams will become the exception. The International Office of the Future (IOF) will be a dramatically different environment than that which exists in the majority of today's organizations. Prospects for the IOF give rise to numerous questions, which are addressed in this book. What are the salient issues? What design options or solution strategies exist to address these issues? How might these design options be best implemented? What are their implications? In addition, a number of specific topics will be discussed including: multi-cultural team productivity, IT platform requirements, and global telecommunications.
