Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Many individuals report reservations about working with an older adult population. A potential factor that may influence this is openness to experience. Additionally, research shows that educational interventions are effective in increasing individuals’ level of knowledge on various topics including older adults and aging. This increased level of knowledge contributes to a higher level of willingness to work with an older adult population. In order to support and extend the existing literature on this topic, we examined the effect of a short-term education session on undergraduate students’ willingness to work with older adults in a variety of positions and settings. Analyses revealed that there were significant differences in reported willingness to work with older adults after the educations session. Specifically, participants reported a higher level of willingness to work with older adults when they were asked to imagine working in a field that was associated with working with an older adult population. This applied to their responses to working with both an active and a frail population. Participants also indicated lower levels of ageism after the education session. This study helped fill a gap in the existing literature as well as provided additional information regarding factors that promote individuals’ willingness to work with an older adult population.

Research has shown that nurses and nursing students do not prefer to care for older adults. With the percentage of older adults increasing, by 2030 one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. The current nursing shortage is increasing as the population increases. This growth in the older adult population will further increase the demand for nurses. Although many related studies have not been conducted in the United States, results are conflicting whether nursing students enter their education with negative attitudes towards the older adult or if they develop negative attitudes during the education and socialization process. Little is known regarding the effect of gender on these attitudes. The purpose of this study was to compare sophomore and senior baccalaureate nursing students’ attitudes toward older adults, using a cross-sectional comparative descriptive design. The convenience sample included all sophomore and senior baccalaureate nursing students at a Midwest university in the United States. Of the possible 179 students, 177 chose to participate, and this study was completed prior to the sophomores attending any clinical experiences. Attitudes were measured using the Kogan’s Attitude Toward Old People Scale (KATOP) and Work Preference Ranking. On the KATOP scale, both sophomore and senior nursing students had very positive attitudes toward older adults. As most research has shown nursing students having negative attitudes on this scale, this study was not consistent with the literature. Related to work preference ranking, most of the literature shows nursing students ranking caring for older adults low upon entering a nursing program, with these rankings becoming more negative over time. This study showed that although students consistently preferred to care for populations other than older adults, there was no statistical difference between sophomore and senior students’ attitudes toward older adults. Gender had no effect on attitudes toward older adults on the KATOP or work preference rankings. This study did show statistical significance for students who had previous experience caring for older adults compared to students with no experience. Students with this experience were more likely to rank caring for older adults more favorably. This study will add to the body of literature in the United States regarding nursing students’ attitudes towards older adults by showing that although nursing students do not prefer to care for older adults compared with other patient populations, their attitudes toward this age group are very positive.

Based on this theme, five research questions were identified. 1) What are the attitudes of younger and older people toward elderly?, 2) Are older peoples’ attitudes toward themselves being influenced by prevailing ageism views?, 3) What are the predictors of ageism?, 4) Do the interaction between younger and older people influences the attitudes toward older people?, and 5) What are the implications of the above research findings toward older people for counselling?. Based on these questions, five hypotheses were developed. No significant difference was found between the attitudes of younger and older people toward the latter. In terms of concept and image about older people, older people tend to see themselves more negative than younger people. People with higher educational levels, younger age and religion tend to score a higher value of FAQ than people with lower educational levels, older age and non-religious. People with higher educational levels, younger age and religion tend to form more positive image toward older people than people with low lower educational levels, older age and non-religious. People with more interaction with older adults tend to have higher scores on FAQ. Basically all the hypotheses were rejected, but this study did make several contributions to the study of ageism in Hong Kong. First, this study found that attitudes of younger students toward older adults were more negative than older people. Students’ attitudes toward older people were dominated by negative ageism views and image; whereas, older peoples’ attitudes toward older adults were mixed with both negative and positive ageism views. It was suggested in this study, attitudes of people toward older adults have to be analyzed from three perspectives, namely ageism, image about older people and attitudes toward caring in order to generate more precise pictures about ageism. Finally, the study suggested that education, intergenerational activities and positive ageing programs could be used to reduce ageism in our societies.

Book excerpt: Studies have shown ageism, empathy, attitudes toward older adults and aging anxiety to be important factors for not only individuals planning to work with older adults, but for all individuals to be able to age healthfully. Increased levels of empathy are associated with decreased levels of ageism and knowledge of the aging process promotes more positive attitudes towards aging and decreased aging anxiety. Aging simulations have been created to increase empathy, improve attitudes toward older adults, and decrease ageism and aging anxiety, but there are still mixed results when evaluating these programs. This study utilized Kolb's experiential learning theory to understand the ways in which participation in the Gray for a Day program, an educational program about sensory and functional decline in older adults, impacts ageism, empathy, attitudes toward older adults and aging anxiety by evaluating the Gray for a Day program with students in an introduction to human development course at a Midwestern university. Changes in ageism, empathy, attitudes toward older adults and aging anxiety after participation in Gray for a Day were assessed using paired samples t-tests. Results showed that participation in Gray for a Day significantly increased positive attitudes towards older adults and the level of understanding and positive perceptions of older adult experiences among participants. Other measures showed decreases in ageism, empathy, and aging anxiety following participation in the program, but the differences were not statistically significant. Results indicate that the Gray for a Day program is effective at improving attitudes toward older adults and increasing understanding and positive perceptions of older adult experiences, but further evaluation and possible program adjustments are needed to reassess for ageism, empathy, and aging anxiety outcomes from the program.
